But despite its larger-than-life reputation, the town itself is quite small, and the best hotels get snapped up quickly, especially in peak season.

When planning your trip, it’s helpful to understand how St Tropez is laid out. 

The Old Town (Vieux Port area) is compact, charming, and very walkable, with most restaurants, bars, boutiques, and attractions within easy reach. In fact, once you arrive, you’ll probably find yourself getting around on foot more than anything else! 

You can also stay a bit outside of the city center in the St Tropez Hillside. This area offers a little more peace and privacy, while still keeping most of St Tropez within easy walking distance.

If you’re open to staying even further out, Sainte-Maxime is an option if you don’t mind taking the ferry into town, and Ramatuelle works well if your priority is beach clubs and lazy days by the sea. 

It’s important to note that summer traffic around St Tropez is famously chaotic. During peak season, roads can become heavily congested, especially around the beaches and town center. So if you’re renting a car, our advice would be to park it up and only use it when absolutely necessary. Many visitors also like to rent bicycles or mopeds, while Uber and Bolt are also available (though they won’t magically solve the traffic problem).

One last thing: St Tropez doesn’t have a train station, so getting here usually involves driving, a private transfer, or arriving via nearby rail hubs.

• Old Town – Best for first-time visitors & nightlife – This is the heart of St Tropez, packed with waterfront cafes, luxury boutiques, and some of the area’s most exclusive bars and restaurants. Our top pick here is White 1921, a chic boutique hotel located directly on the famous Place des Lices.

• St Tropez Hillside – Best for a luxurious & relaxing stay – Located just outside the center, this area offers a quieter, more exclusive atmosphere with upscale villas and beautiful gardens. Our favorite place to stay here is Hotel Brin d’Azur – Saint Tropez, a tranquil garden oasis just a short walk from the town center.

• Sainte-Maxime – Best for families & value – Situated across the gulf, this area offers a more relaxed Riviera experience with sandy beaches and frequent ferry connections to St Tropez. Our top pick here is Résidence les Tourelles, a charming holiday resort set in a 19th-century chateau with a beautiful Mediterranean park.

• Ramatuelle – Best for beaches & beach clubs – Just south of St Tropez, this area is famous for Pampelonne Beach and its iconic beach clubs. Our favorite place to stay here is Hôtel Saint Andre because it offers direct beach access.

Old Town

BEST FOR FIRST-TIME VISITORS & NIGHTLIFE

Pros

• Walking distance to the Vieux Port, restaurants, and nightlife
• Charming historic streets and luxury boutiques right at your doorstep
• No need to worry about driving or parking in the notorious summer traffic

Cons

• Can be very crowded and noisy during the peak summer months
• Accommodation here is generally the most expensive in the area

If it’s your first time in St Tropez, there’s a very good chance Old Town is where you’ll want to stay. This is the classic, postcard-perfect side of St Tropez that most people imagine before arriving, with pastel-colored streets, luxury boutiques, glamorous yacht-lined marinas, and buzzing cafes where people-watching feels like an official activity.

It’s also home to many of the town’s biggest highlights, including the Vieux Port, Place des Lices, the Citadel of Saint-Tropez, and the charming old fishing quarter of La Ponche.

What makes staying here so special is just how effortless everything feels. You can start your morning wandering the famous market at Place des Lices, grab coffee in a sunny square, stop for a long lunch overlooking the harbor, and spend the afternoon browsing designer boutiques. As evening rolls around, the town comes alive, with some of the best restaurants, cocktail bars, and nightlife experiences all within walking distance from your hotel (no taxis or stressful parking required). 

Of course, there are trade-offs. Old Town is busy, especially in summer, and accommodation here is often among the most expensive in the area. But if you want that quintessential St Tropez experience, it really is hard to beat.

Hotel la Ponche – $$$$

If you are really (and we mean really) looking to treat yourself on your visit to St Tropez, Hotel la Ponche is definitely worth checking out. This is a stunning five-star hotel nestled in former fishermen’s houses right in the heart of St Tropez. 

When you stay here, you’ll be directly on La Ponche Beach and just a 5-minute walk to the Vieux Port. The real highlight, though, is the hotel’s legendary bar, which was once frequented by Brigitte Bardot and Pablo Picasso! 

You can expect prices to start around €1,300 per night and climb to €1,600+ per night depending on the season. It’s definitely a splurge, but worth it if you’re after something truly special. 

If Hotel la Ponche is fully booked, Le Yaca Saint-Tropez is an excellent backup. This is another luxurious 5-star hotel just a stone’s throw from the Vieux Port. 

Hôtel de Paris Saint-Tropez is another spectacular option that’s just a 2-minute walk from the harbor. Here, you’ll find a rooftop outdoor pool and an American-style breakfast served daily. 

White 1921 – $$$

Next up is our top pick for the Old Town, White 1921. Set right on Place des Lices, this chic boutique hotel puts you in one of the best locations in St Tropez, with all the famous markets and boutiques right outside your door. 

We love this hotel because you’re just a few minutes’ walk from the Vieux Port, and there’s also the iconic Michelin-starred Louis Vuitton restaurant onsite, which feels very fitting for St Tropez! 

In terms of pricing, rates for this hotel typically start from around €500 to €900+ per night, which is excellent value for the location. 

If you’re looking for another option, Villa Romana is a charming bed and breakfast worth considering. It’s also close to Place des Lices (just a 5-minute walk away) and La Ponche Beach (12-minute walk away). 

Les Lauriers is also a fabulous option. This hotel is set in a traditional Tropezian house, and it’s right around the corner from Place des Lices.

Hôtel Playa – $$

For our more budget-friendly pick in Old Town, we absolutely love Hôtel Playa.

The biggest selling point for Hôtel Playa is the location. You’re just a 2-minute walk from the marina and around 5 minutes from the Vieux Port, making it easy to experience St Tropez entirely on foot. The hotel itself is also super cute and comfortable, with a gorgeous communal lounge and air conditioning in every room. 

Rates typically start from around €180 to €350+ per night, depending on the season, which isn’t bad at all considering the prime location in central St Tropez. 

Another budget-friendly option we love is Hotel B Lodge. This hotel is located at the foot of the Citadel, so you’ll be within easy walking distance of the harbor and the town center. 

Beau Clocher is also a solid option nearby. This is a bright, modern hotel with a fitness room and a small hot tub. 

St Tropez Hillside

BEST FOR A LUXURIOUS & RELAXING STAY

Pros

• Much quieter and more peaceful than Old Town
• Beautiful, expansive properties with large gardens and pools
• Easier parking and access to coastal roads and beaches

Cons

• You will likely need a car, bike, or taxi to reach the Old Town center
• Fewer dining options within immediate walking distance

If your idea of St Tropez involves peaceful mornings, lazy pool days, and retreating somewhere quiet after dinner, there’s a very good chance the St Tropez Hillside is where you’ll want to stay.

This is a quieter, more exclusive side of St Tropez that feels worlds away from the crowds of Old Town. Instead of bustling cafes and busy streets, you’ll be surrounded by sprawling villas, Mediterranean gardens, and beautiful pools tucked away among the pine trees. Many of the properties here feel more private and spacious too, making it ideal if you’re after a more relaxed, luxurious stay.

We absolutely love the slower pace of this area. You can start your morning with breakfast on a sunny terrace, spend the afternoon lounging by the pool or heading to quieter beaches like Canoubiers or Salins, and then venture into town for dinner and drinks once you’re ready for a little atmosphere. 

The only downside to staying in the St Tropez Hillside is that, depending on where you stay, you may need a taxi, bike, or rental car to get into Old Town, and dining options nearby can be a bit more limited. However, if peace, privacy, and a touch of luxury are high on your list, the Hillside area is definitely worth considering. 

Villa Cosy, hotel & spa – $$$$

Our absolute favorite pick in St Tropez Hillside is Villa Cosy, hotel & spa. This is a luxurious 5-star boutique hotel that feels more like a private retreat than a typical resort, with stylish rooms, suites, and villas centered around a beautiful heated pool and lush gardens. There’s also a full spa onsite, plus a small bar for an evening drink and aperitif (my fave!) after a long day in the sun. 

This hotel is definitely a splurge, but if you want somewhere that feels luxurious without being over-the-top, this is hands down one of the best stays in the area.

Rates typically start from around €371 to €8,874+ per night, depending on the room type and season. 

If Villa Cosy is full (and it does book up in peak season!), La Bastide de Saint Tropez is a brilliant alternative. This 5-star hotel is equally gorgeous, and it’s just a 10-minute walk to the town center. 

Lou Saint-Tropez is another spectacular option that’s just a 10-minute walk to the town center. We absolutely love this hotel for its boho vibes and sunny terrace. 

Hotel Brin d’Azur – Saint Tropez – $$$

If you’re looking for something a little more affordable, Hotel Brin d’Azur – Saint Tropez is a great option to have on your radar. 

One of the biggest perks here is the location. You’re just a short stroll from a private beach and around a 15 to 20 minute walk (or quick drive/taxi) into the center of St Tropez, making it a nice middle ground if you want easier parking and a little more breathing room.

Prices usually begin at around €170 per night and can go up to €1,000+ for peak dates, which honestly isn’t too bad considering the location. 

Another hotel in the hillside we love is Villa La Begude Boutique B&B. We love this hotel because it’s small and quiet, with popular beaches like Salins Beach and Pampelonne Beach just a 5-minute drive away. 

Hotel La Romarine is also a great mid-range option, especially if you’re after somewhere with a little more space to spread out. This hotel offers both villas and hotel rooms, and the property itself is simply gorgeous with a massive swimming pool, tennis courts, and a balcony in every room. 

Loumar – $$

For a more budget-friendly stay in the St Tropez Hillside, Loumar is well worth a look! 

This small boutique stay feels calm, peaceful, and a world away from the crowds, with guests consistently praising the warm hospitality and excellent continental breakfast. There’s also a lovely garden and outdoor pool, making it an easy place to slow down and relax between beach trips.

Location-wise, it strikes a really nice balance. You’re around a 12-minute walk from Canoubiers Beach, and just a 10-minute Uber ride to St Tropez, giving you easy access to both the coast and Old Town.

If the Loumar is all booked up, Chambres d’Hotes Les Amandiers is another budget-friendly option in the area! This is a cozy family-run guest house that’s just a 5-minute drive from the town center. 

Another one of our favorites is Maison d’Orange – Chambres. This is a clean, basic hotel just a 10-minute walk to the Vieux Port.

Sainte-Maxime

BEST FOR FAMILIES & VALUE

Pros

• More affordable accommodation and dining options than St Tropez
• Great sandy beaches and a family-friendly atmosphere
• Easy ferry access to St Tropez, allowing you to avoid the terrible summer traffic

Cons

• You are not actually staying in St Tropez, so you miss out on the immediate glamour
• The ferry stops running late at night, limiting your nightlife options in St Tropez

If you love the idea of St Tropez but not necessarily the sky-high hotel prices or chaotic summer traffic, you’ll definitely want to consider staying in Sainte-Maxime. 

Sainte-Maxime is located just across the Gulf of St Tropez and offers a more relaxed and affordable French Riviera experience. Even though it’s not technically St Tropez, you’ll still find beautiful sandy beaches, a lively promenade, waterfront restaurants, and a charming Old Town of its own.

In our opinion, Sainte-Maxime is noticeably less flashy than St Tropez, but in a good way. It’s more laid-back, family-friendly, and a lot easier on the wallet. You’ll also find a much wider range of accommodation options here, so it’s definitely more practical for families and longer stays. 

A perfect day in Sainte-Maxime might look like spending the morning relaxing on a beautiful beach like Plage de la Nartelle, mooching around local markets in the afternoon, and then hopping over to St Tropez for dinner and a dose of Riviera glamour. 

Of course, staying here does come with a few trade-offs. You won’t be able to say that you’ve actually stayed in St Tropez, and late-night ferry schedules can make nightlife a little tricky. However, if you still want the beaches, sunshine, and classic Riviera vibes without the premium price tag, Sainte-Maxime makes a lot of sense.

La Belle Aurore – $$$

One of our absolute favorite luxury options in Sainte-Maxime is La Belle Aurore. This elegant hotel is set right on the waterfront facing St Tropez, and it has an infinity pool, private beach area, and insanely gorgeous views of the sea. 

We always recommend this hotel because it’s in such a convenient location. You’re only a 5-minute walk from Sainte-Maxime’s Old Town and roughly 15 minutes on foot to the ferry terminal, making day trips to St Tropez nice and easy. 

You can expect prices to start around €200 per night and climb to €850+ per night, depending on the season, which is just so much more affordable compared to the hotels on the St Tropez side of the bay. 

If La Belle Aurore isn’t available on your preferred dates, Hotel Les Tourelles is a wonderful backup. This hotel is housed in a stunning 19th-century building, and it’s only about a 5-minute walk to the Port of Sainte-Maxime. 

Best Western Hotel Matisse is another spectacular option offering stylish Provençal-style rooms. This hotel also has an elevator, which isn’t always a given in the French Riviera. 

Résidence les Tourelles – $$

Next up is our top pick for Sainte-Maxime, Résidence les Tourelles. We love this hotel because it provides a mix of hotel rooms and apartments, many featuring fully equipped kitchens, which is so handy if you’re traveling as a family, staying for a few days, or simply want to save a bit of money on meals between beach days.

Location-wise, you’re only a 5-minute walk to the Sainte-Maxime city center and the Port of Sainte-Maxime, so all the local restaurants, cafes, and the ferry to St Tropez are within easy reach. In terms of pricing, you can expect rates to typically start from around €119 to €300+ per night, depending on the season. 

Another mid-range option we love is the Best Western Premier Montfleuri. This hotel has such a beautiful garden and pool area, and it’s also just a 5-minute walk to the Sainte-Maxime town center. 

Domaine Du Calidianus is also worth considering. It’s a bit further out (15-minute walk from the center of Sainte-Maxime), but it has 2 outdoor pools with a bar on-site. 

Hôtel le Chardon Bleu – $

For our budget-friendly pick in Sainte-Maxime, we cannot recommend the family-run Hôtel le Chardon Bleu enough! 

This hotel feels more like a welcoming guesthouse than a standard 3-star stay. And location-wise, it’s hard to beat for the price! You’re just a short walk from Sainte-Maxime’s Central Beach and only a few minutes away from the ferry terminal, making it really easy to pop over to St Tropez for the day without having to deal with traffic. 

Price-wise, rates typically start from around €70 to €150+ per night, depending on the season, which is excellent value considering how close you are to St Tropez. 

Another budget-friendly option is Hotel Les Palmiers. This is a quaint, super stylish hotel with an on-site restaurant and a terrace that overlooks the marina. 

Le Preconil is also a solid budget-friendly pick in Sainte-Maxime. We love this hotel because it’s close to the beach and offers an optional continental breakfast in your room each morning.

Ramatuelle

BEST FOR BEACHES & BEACH CLUBS

Pros

• Immediate access to the famous Pampelonne Beach and its iconic beach clubs
• A laid-back, luxurious atmosphere away from the town center crowds
• Beautiful natural surroundings, including vineyards and coastal trails

Cons

• You will need a car or taxi to reach the Old Town of St Tropez
• Accommodation and dining in this area can be very expensive

If your dream St Tropez trip involves extra-long beach days, stylish beach clubs, and lazy lunches by the sea, Ramatuelle is definitely worth considering. 

This small village is located about 6 miles (10 km) south of St Tropez, and it’s home to Pampelonne Beach, where you’ll find some of the French Riviera’s most iconic beach clubs, including the infamous Club 55. 

While the beach is the main attraction in Ramatuelle, the area also offers excellent restaurants, hidden coves, nearby vineyards, and plenty of scenic coastal trails to explore. The village itself is also worth a wander, with winding medieval streets, stone buildings, and lovely views over the sea and surrounding countryside.

Even though you’re not in St Tropez, the vibe in Ramatuelle is just as glamorous, but in a more relaxed, barefoot-luxury kind of way. You won’t have the crowds (or the chaos) of Old Town, and you also won’t have to fight for space on the beach. 

Of course, like any area, Ramatuelle comes with a few trade-offs. You’ll likely need a taxi or rental car if you want to reach St Tropez itself, and accommodation around Pampelonne Beach can be seriously expensive. However, if beach clubs, lots of sunshine, and laid-back Riviera luxury are high on your wishlist, Ramatuelle makes for a fantastic base. 

Hôtel Villa Marie Saint Tropez – $$$

For our luxury pick in Ramatuelle, we always recommend Hôtel Villa Marie Saint Tropez. We absolutely love this hotel because it offers the quintessential St Tropez escape with lush Mediterranean gardens, signature orange loungers and umbrellas, and a beautiful terrace overlooking the Bay of Pampelonne.

Location-wise, you’re only around a 10-minute drive to St Tropez’s Old Town and a 5-minute drive to Pampelonne Beach, so you really do get the best of both worlds. 

In terms of pricing, you can expect rates to typically start from around €900 and climb to €3,500+ during peak season. 

If Hôtel Villa Marie is all booked up, it’s also worth checking out La Ferme D’Augustin. This is a family-owned hotel that’s just steps away from Tahiti Beach along Pampelonne Bay. 

Auberge de l’Oumède is another spectacular higher-end option. We love this hotel because it’s in a quiet vineyard and only about a 5-minute drive to Pampelonne Beach. 

Hôtel Saint Andre – $$

For our mid-range pick, we recommend Hôtel Saint Andre. This hotel is literally right on the beach and offers that classic French Riviera experience with direct beachfront access, a gorgeous sun terrace, and a daily continental breakfast spread. 

For us, the biggest selling point is the location. Tahiti Beach is just a 4-minute walk away, putting you close to some of Ramatuelle’s best beach clubs, while St Tropez’s Old Town is less than a 10-minute drive away when you’re ready for dinner or drinks.

Price-wise, rates usually begin at around €322 per night and can go up to €600+ for peak dates.

Another option in the area we love is Hotel La Figuiere. This hotel offers vineyard views and, best of all, it’s just a 10-minute walk to Tahiti beach. 

La Vigne de Ramatuelle is also a fabulous mid-range option. This is an elevated guest house-style hotel with gorgeous communal areas, including an infinity pool. 

Campagne les Jumeaux – $

For our budget-friendly pick in Ramatuelle, we absolutely adore Campagne les Jumeaux. 

The hotel itself is a beautiful country house, and honestly, it’s one of the best value finds in Ramatuelle. The vibe here is a bit more relaxed compared to other options in the area, and it’s especially family-friendly, with a huge grassy lawn and plenty of space to properly switch off. 

Location-wise, you’re just an 8-minute walk from Pampelonne Beach, making beach days (and nights) extremely easy! 

Prices vary depending on the season, but you can expect nightly rates to be in the realm of €200 to €400 per night.  

Another budget-friendly hotel we like to recommend is Camping la Croix du Sud. This property offers chalets and mobile homes to rent, and there’s also a family-friendly swimming pool on-site. 

Hôtel L’Escalet is another option, offering a peaceful retreat near the beautiful L’Escalet beach. We love the boho vibes of this hotel, and all the communal areas and gardens are just so beautiful! 

Top Activities to do in St Tropez

Now that you know where to stay, let’s talk about what to actually do once you arrive! While St Tropez is best known for glamorous beach clubs and celebrity-packed yachts, there’s actually a lot more to it than sipping rosé by the sea (although we highly recommend making time for that too!).

Here are just a few activities that are definitely worth adding to your St Tropez itinerary:

• Explore the Bay of St Tropez by boat – There’s honestly no better way to experience St Tropez than from the water. On this private boat charter, you’ll cruise past glamorous yachts, hidden coves, and some of the prettiest stretches of coastline on the French Riviera. If you’re celebrating something special (or just feeling a little fancy), this is absolutely worth the splurge! 

• See city sights with a local – St Tropez is a gorgeous place to wander with no real plan, but having a local show you around really does make a huge difference. This guided walking tour takes you through the history, hidden corners, and stories behind the popular spots (like Place des Lices and La Ponche) and hidden gems you might otherwise walk straight past. 

• Hit a beach club – No trip to St Tropez is complete without visiting a beach club on Pampelonne Beach. Club 55 is the most famous and iconic, but be sure to make reservations a few months in advance. Lou Lou is another incredibly popular and chic option for a long, luxurious lunch by the sea.

• Explore The Citadel – This 17th-century fortress sits on a hill overlooking the town and offers some of the most spectacular panoramic views of the Gulf of St Tropez. It also houses the Museum of Maritime History, which is well worth a visit! 

• Go wine tasting – The region surrounding St Tropez is famous for its exceptional rosé wines. Take an afternoon to visit some of the local vineyards and estates in Ramatuelle or Gassin for a tasting session in the beautiful Provençal countryside.
