This is the area and hotel we loved the most and suggest booking ASAP!

Our personal FAVORITE area to stay in São Miguel is Ponta Delgada! We love its charming historic streets, fantastic restaurants, and convenient location for exploring the island’s incredible sights.

Our top hotel pick is Hotel Do Colegio! This beautiful 19th-century manor is full of character, with a lovely courtyard pool and an unbeatable central location.

Overview of the Best Areas to Stay in São Miguel

Santa Bárbara Beach is absolutely stunning

São Miguel is compact enough to explore by car, but its volcanic lakes, thermal pools, beaches, viewpoints, and hiking trails are spread across the island. Base yourself near the places you’re most excited to visit to spend less time on the road and more time enjoying the scenery!

Renting a car is usually the easiest way to explore beyond Ponta Delgada. Public buses mainly connect towns, so they aren’t particularly convenient for reaching remote viewpoints or hiking trailheads. If you’d prefer not to drive, staying in Ponta Delgada gives you plenty of guided tours to choose from, including options with hotel pickup.

For summer trips, we recommend booking your rental car early and choosing a compact vehicle for the island’s narrow roads. Uber and Bolt can help with shorter journeys around the main towns, but availability can be limited in rural areas. We wouldn’t rely on them for trips to remote attractions, especially when you’ll need a ride back.

Before we get into the details, here’s a quick overview of each area on our list:

  • Ponta Delgada – Best for first-time visitors – Stay here for the island’s largest selection of restaurants, tours, shops, and hotels, all within easy reach of the airport. Hotel do Colégio is our top pick thanks to its central location and stunning pool in the courtyard.
  • Ribeira Grande / Santa Bárbara – Best for surfing and north-coast scenery – Base yourself here if you want to be close to Santa Bárbara Beach, Lagoa do Fogo, and Caldeira Velha while enjoying a more relaxed pace. We recommend Volcanic Charming House for its walkable location in Ribeira Grande.
  • Furnas – Best for hot springs and volcanic landscapes – Choose Furnas to have thermal pools, steaming fumaroles, lush gardens, and traditional cozido restaurants nearby. Vista do Vale is our favorite mid-range option here, with beautiful valley views and an outdoor pool.
  • Caloura / Vila Franca do Campo – Best for ocean views and a relaxed coastal stay – This part of the south coast puts you near sheltered swimming areas, Vila Franca Islet, and some gorgeous oceanfront scenery. ANC Resort is our top choice for its spacious self-catering units, sea views, and resort-style facilities.

Important Tip

Multiple São Miguel trips have taught us that this city doesn’t reward spontaneity when it comes to planning. The good places get snapped up months in advance, leaving the overpriced and underwhelming options for last-minute travelers.

The sweet spot for booking São Miguel accommodations is 3-4 months out—enough time to secure good rates but not so far ahead that you’re locking in plans excessively early.

Where to Stay in São Miguel

Ponta Delgada

BEST FOR FIRST-TIME VISITORS

Pros

  • Great base for day trips to maximize your time
  • A good balance of city charm and outdoor adventure
  • Easy to get around without a rental car

Cons

  • Not as tranquil as other parts of the Azores
  • Can be quite busy during the peak summer months

If you’re visiting São Miguel for the first time, Ponta Delgada is one of the best places to base yourself! As the island’s main hub and regional capital, it has the widest selection of hotels, restaurants, shops, and nightlife, plus easy access to incredible attractions like Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo.

This is also where you’ll likely fly into, making it a super convenient starting point for exploring the island. It’s especially great if you’re traveling without a rental car, as there are plenty of tour operators offering day trips and whale watching excursions. Plus, there’s enough going on day to day that you won’t feel bored at all!

We also found Ponta Delgada to be charming and historic, with beautiful old buildings, cobblestone streets, and a relaxed vibe despite being the island’s largest city. We loved wandering through Mercado da Graça food market, strolling along the waterfront, and checking out landmarks like Portas da Cidade and the historic old town.

Of course, it’s a little busier than São Miguel’s smaller towns, but we think the convenience more than makes up for it, especially on a first visit!

Octant Ponta Delgada – $$$

Octant Hotels Ponta Delgada in Azores Portugal

Octant Ponta Delgada feels like luxury from the moment you walk in. As you pass through the lobby, you’ll notice striking art made from local materials, and once you step into your room, you’re greeted with panoramic ocean views. Even better, there’s a rooftop pool and bar, perfect for sunset drinks, romantic evenings, or a relaxed afternoon with a DJ set in the background.

There’s a strong eco focus here, so don’t be surprised if they use Azorean milk on you for your massage in the spa. The restaurant is another great spot, with an open kitchen, a rustic feel, and a wood-fired oven, serving a mix of Mediterranean and Portuguese dishes.

It’s near the marina and an easy walk into Ponta Delgada, so you’re close to everything without being right in the middle of it. Prices usually range from €200 to €550 per night.

If Octant Ponta Delgada is fully booked, Delta Hotels by Marriott Azores is a really good option, with a fresh design, bright rooms with movable walls (super handy for a bit more privacy), and both indoor and outdoor pools for any season. It’s less than 10 minutes from the historic center of Ponta Delgada and about 5 minutes from the harbor and airport.

NINE DOTS Azorean Art Boutique Hotel is a nice pick if you’re into smaller stays with a bit more character, focused on local art, history, architecture, and culture, with an on-site gallery and a restaurant mixing Italian and Azorean dishes. Just a 2-minute walk from Portas da Cidade, you’re right in the middle of the buzz, surrounded by shops, cafés, bars, and the marina.

Hotel Do Colegio – $$

Hotel Do Colegio in Azores Portugal (1)

Hotel Do Colegio is our absolute favorite stay in Ponta Delgada, and it was an easy pick for so many reasons, especially the value. The biggest draw for us is the building itself, a 19th-century manor that used to be a music conservatory and private school, so there’s plenty of history to keep you entertained.

The food is also really good, with a focus on local Azorean ingredients and fresh seafood that’s hard to resist (even if it’s there every day). On scorching days, the small courtyard pool is a real lifesaver, and when you’re ready to head out, it’s just a 10-minute walk to the waterfront and into town.

Parking can be tricky, as with most historic centers; there’s a small underground garage with limited spots (paid), and street parking fills up fast (patience required). Prices start at around €130 per night, which is honestly a great deal for what you get.

Another stay we really liked in the area is VIP Executive Azores Hotel with panoramic rooftop views and a wellness center that includes an indoor pool and even a squash court. It’s about a 20-minute walk to the historic center and marina, and just 10 minutes from António Borges Garden, a great botanical park.

MS Vila Nova is close to the city center and connected to a shopping complex, which makes it easy to spend a bit of time (and money) on shops and arcade games. We really like the heated outdoor pool here, and the rooms are spacious and well soundproofed, which helps given its location closer to the airport.

Jomafreitas – $

Jomafreitas in Azores Portugal

Jomafreitas makes it easy to enjoy the Azores without blowing your travel budget, especially if you prefer a more personal, communal feel. Rooms are simple but very functional, and there are family options with kitchens if you don’t want to wait your turn in the shared one (plus free coffee and snacks, which is always a win).

Downtime is important here, and you can choose from a terrace and a small internal garden, both nice and quiet spots to relax. If you can, ask for a room at the back, as they’re away from street noise.

When you feel like exploring, it’s just a short walk from Portas da Cidade, so you’re right in the most walkable part of town. With prices starting around €60 per night, it’s an absolute steal!

If Jomafreitas is all sold out, Magma Hostel is worth checking out—new and modern, with rooms that come with private bathrooms, and some even have terraces or patios (not something you see in city-center hostels). It’s right in the heart of Ponta Delgada, about a 10-minute ride from João Paulo II Airport, on a quiet street, which makes it a nice, peaceful base.

Hotel Sete Cidades is another nice option if you prefer something more modern and stylish, with free on-site parking, spacious rooms (some with balconies), and a simple but free breakfast buffet. Location-wise, it’s in a really good spot, set on a quiet street but just steps from local life, including small bakeries and markets.

Ribeira Grande / Santa Bárbara

Santa Bárbara Beach, Sao Miguel, Portugal
Santa Bárbara Beach
Lagoa do Fogo, Sao Miguel, Portugal
You will also be close to Lagoa do Fogo

BEST FOR SURFING AND NORTH-COAST SCENERY

Pros

  • Easy access to Santa Bárbara Beach and some of São Miguel’s best-known surf breaks
  • A relaxed local atmosphere with volcanic coastline and mountain scenery nearby
  • Well placed for Lagoa do Fogo, Caldeira Velha, and other north-coast day trips

Cons

  • Fewer evening dining and nightlife options than Ponta Delgada
  • A rental car is highly recommended for reaching beaches and inland attractions
  • The north coast can be windier and cloudier than the south side of the island

Ribeira Grande is our top pick for travelers who want beaches and outdoor adventures close by, without having to stay somewhere completely remote. The town is the largest on São Miguel’s north coast, but it’s still pretty low-key with a traditional, walkable center. It’s a lovely place to slow down, grab a coffee, and wander between outings around the island.

The major advantage of staying in this area is being near Santa Bárbara Beach. Its broad stretch of dark volcanic sand is popular with surfers, but it’s equally enjoyable if you’re happy to admire the waves from a sun lounger or seaside cafe.

The location is also useful for exploring the island’s interior. Caldeira Velha’s warm pools and forest trails are nearby, and Lagoa do Fogo is an easy outing when the weather cooperates. Ponta Delgada is still reachable for dinner or a change of scenery, although it’s not somewhere you will want to commute to every evening.

For easy dinners out and shops nearby, central Ribeira Grande will definitely be your best bet. But if you’d rather start the day with a beach walk or sunrise surf, we recommend staying closer to Santa Bárbara.

Hotel Verde Mar & SPA – $$$

Photo credit: Hotel Verde Mar & SPA

For our luxury pick in Ribeira Grande, we absolutely love Hotel Verde Mar & SPA! This contemporary oceanfront hotel sits beside Monte Verde Beach, with Atlantic views that make staying in feel pretty tempting.

There’s plenty to enjoy beyond your room, too, including indoor and outdoor pools, a spa, gym, restaurant, and bar. We especially love having those indoor options for days when the island’s weather has other plans. And when you fancy heading out, central Ribeira Grande is close enough for dinner or a leisurely stroll.

As for pricing, you can expect to pay approximately €130 to €300+ per night, depending on the season and room type. Summer stays tend to cost more, and it’s worth budgeting a little extra if you have your heart set on an ocean-view room!

Another luxury option we absolutely love is Santa Bárbara Eco-Beach Resort. It overlooks Santa Bárbara Beach and offers stylish studios and villas; perfect for a romantic trip or a longer stay by the ocean.

For something smaller and more intimate, Moinho da Areia is also worth checking out. This adults-only property has an outdoor pool and garden, with a more personal feel than the area’s larger resorts.

Volcanic Charming House – $$

Volcanic Charming House in Sao Miguel, Portugal (1)

For our mid-range pick, we have Volcanic Charming House! We love this hotel because they offer a choice of rooms and apartments, including options with kitchen facilities, which is super handy if you’re traveling with family or planning a longer stay. We also love the outdoor pool and garden, and there’s even a poolside bar during summer!

Location-wise, you can walk into central Ribeira Grande for dinner, so you won’t need to get in the car every time you’re hungry. Santa Bárbara Beach is also just a short drive away. For this hotel, we recommend budgeting around €80 to €185+ per night, depending on your dates and room type.

Casa da Flor is another mid-range option we like to recommend. This small guesthouse has simple rooms and a garden in a residential setting, and it’s just a short drive from central Ribeira Grande.

A Casa del Rei – $

A Casa del Rei in Ribeira Grande Sao Miguel Portugal

For our budget-friendly pick in Ribeira Grande, we recommend A Casa del Rei. This small guesthouse puts you right in the historic center, with the best cafes and restaurants just a short stroll away.

The rooms are simple but comfortable, with private bathrooms and Wi-Fi. Some also have balconies overlooking the surrounding streets, so you can enjoy a little fresh air before heading out for the day!

You won’t find a pool or lots of resort facilities here, but if you’re planning to spend most of your time exploring, we think it fits the bill perfectly. You can head out for dinner on foot, then use your rental car for beach days and adventures around the island.

Prices vary by season, but you can expect to pay approximately €50 to €120 per night. With only a few rooms available, we recommend booking as early as possible if you’re planning a summer visit.

If staying near the beach is your number one priority, Casa Areal de Santa Barbara is another budget-friendly option we love. It’s just an 8-minute walk from the beach, and they even offer an airport shuttle service to make arrival/departure days easy!

Areal de Santa Bárbara Sea View is also worth a look, especially if you’re traveling with surfers. The rooms are basic, but you’ll have access to a shared kitchen and an excellent beach location.

Furnas

Furnas is famous for its geothermal pools and hot springs
A path and flowers in Terra Nostra Park, Sao Miguel, Portugal
Terra Nostra Park is one of the big draws

BEST FOR HOT SPRINGS AND GEOTHERMAL LANDSCAPES

Pros

  • Walkable access to hot springs, fumaroles, gardens, and traditional cozido restaurants
  • A lush setting that feels completely different from São Miguel’s coastal towns
  • Peaceful mornings and evenings after day-trippers leave

Cons

  • Far from Sete Cidades and other sights on the western side of the island
  • Fewer restaurants and shops than Ponta Delgada
  • The valley can be damp, misty, and rainy even when other parts of the island are clear

If hot springs and lush green scenery are high on your São Miguel wish list, we think you’ll absolutely love staying in Furnas!

The village sits inside a volcanic caldera, surrounded by steaming vents, mineral springs, and the most beautiful gardens. Spending a night or two here gives you time to enjoy the atmosphere once the day-trippers have headed back to their hotels.

Terra Nostra Park is one of the biggest draws here, with leafy walking paths and a large thermal pool right in the village. Poça da Dona Beija is another popular spot for a soak, and nearby Furnas Lake is worth a visit, too. You can watch steam rising from the ground and see where the local cozido stew is cooked underground using geothermal heat (so cool!).

The main trade-off of staying in Furnas is the location. Trips to Sete Cidades and the island’s far west involve longer drives, and you’ll have fewer dining options than in Ponta Delgada. For that reason, we recommend two or three nights in Furnas as part of a split stay, or longer if you’re focusing on the east.

One last tip: don’t forget a light rain jacket! There’s a reason the valley is so green, and the weather can change quickly.

Terra Nostra Garden Hotel – $$$

For our luxury pick in Furnas, it has to be Terra Nostra Garden Hotel! Staying here gives you access to Terra Nostra’s beautiful gardens and famous thermal pool, so you can enjoy a soak or wander through the grounds outside the busiest visiting hours. That alone is what makes this hotel pretty tempting!

Inside, you’ll find Art Deco-inspired interiors and comfortable, spacious rooms. There’s also an indoor wellness facility for those days when Furnas lives up to its lush, rainy reputation.

This hotel is definitely a splurge at around €160 to €360+ per night, but if you’re planning a special occasion, this would be high on our shortlist!

For a peaceful stay outside the village center, Furnas Lake Forest Living is another luxury option we love. Its modern villas and studios sit in a wooded setting near Furnas Lake, and the kitchenettes and extra living space are ideal for longer visits.

If spa time is high on your list, Octant Furnas is another fabulous option. This stylish hotel has indoor and outdoor thermal pools, modern rooms, and an excellent on-site restaurant perfect for rainy days.

Vista do Vale – $$

For our mid-range pick in Furnas, we always recommend Vista do Vale. This friendly, family-run hotel has gorgeous mountain views and a stunning outdoor pool, which is such a nice bonus at this price point!

The rooms are simple but comfortable, and some have balconies where you can enjoy the surrounding greenery. There’s also an on-site restaurant and bar, plus breakfast to set you up for a day of hot springs and hiking.

Location-wise, Central Furnas is about a 10-minute walk away, though the sloping roads may make you prefer driving back after dinner. Expect to pay approximately €70 to €200+ per night, leaving a little more room in the budget for adventures around the island!

Vulcânica Boutique Suites is another mid-range option worth checking out. The modern suites are right in the village, and some have kitchenettes, which is super convenient for keeping snacks and drinks on hand.

Victória Guest House – $

For something even more budget-friendly, you can’t go wrong with Victória Guest House. This simple, central guesthouse is perfect for anyone looking to save their holiday budget for hot springs, local food, and adventures around the island!

The rooms are compact and simply decorated, with private bathrooms and Wi-Fi, plus a shared lounge where you can relax between outings. Breakfast may also be available, so check what’s included in your chosen rate before booking.

The location is the biggest perk here. Restaurants, village sights, and geothermal attractions are all within walking distance, so you won’t need to get in the car every time you head out.

As for pricing, expect to pay approximately €50 to €80 per night, but make sure to book early for summer when affordable stays in Furnas fill up quickly!

Another affordable option we like is Atlantic 3 Bicas. Its fresh, contemporary rooms put you close to Furnas’s restaurants and geothermal attractions, making it a great alternative if Victória Guest House is fully booked.

For a more rural setting, Quinta de Santana – Queimadas is also worth a look. We love the garden surroundings, and the shared kitchen is handy for preparing breakfast or an easy meal before settling in for the evening.

Caloura / Vila Franca do Campo

The village of Villa Franca do Campo in Sao Miguel, Portugal
The village of Vila Franca do Campo
Views of the ocean near Vila Franca Village in Sao Miguel, Portugal
Look at these views!

BEST FOR OCEAN VIEWS AND A RELAXED SOUTH-COAST STAY

Pros

  • Sheltered swimming spots, coastal views, and generally easy access to the sea
  • A calmer, more residential feel than Ponta Delgada
  • Convenient for Vila Franca Islet trips and exploring the central and eastern south coast

Cons

  • Restaurants, shops, and sights are spread out, particularly around Caloura
  • A rental car is essential for most stays in this area
  • Nightlife is very limited, and evenings can feel sleepy outside the summer season

Caloura and Vila Franca do Campo are separate places, but together they make up our favorite stretch of the south coast for a slower seaside trip. Caloura is a small coastal enclave known for its sheltered harbor, rocky swimming areas, and upscale homes. Vila Franca do Campo is a larger historic town with more restaurants, shops, and boat connections.

Vila Franca Islet is the area’s standout attraction. In summer, boats carry visitors to the flooded volcanic crater offshore for swimming and snorkeling, which is just as cool as it sounds! Even if you don’t make it to the islet, there are lovely ocean views and plenty of spots along the coast to enjoy some time by the water.

This area itself sits between Ponta Delgada and Furnas, making it a useful base for south-coast sightseeing. You’ll get a slower pace without feeling too far removed from the places on your itinerary.

One thing to check carefully before booking a hotel in this area is the advertised location. You’ll see properties listed under Caloura, Água de Pau, Água d’Alto, and Vila Franca do Campo, but these places aren’t all within walking distance of each other, so check the map to see what’s nearby before making your choice.

Pestana Bahia Praia Nature & Beach Resort – $$$

Pestana Bahia Praia Vila Franca Do Campo in Sao Miguel Portugal 1
Photo credit: Pestana Bahia Praia Nature & Beach Resort

For our luxury pick on this stretch of coast, we love Pestana Bahia Praia Nature & Beach Resort! It sits beside Água d’Alto Beach, just west of Vila Franca do Campo, so you won’t have far to go for a stroll along the beach.

The rooms here are spacious, and many have balconies overlooking the ocean, which is definitely worth considering if you love waking up to a sea view! There’s also direct beach access, outdoor pools, tennis courts, a gym, and large gardens, giving you plenty of reasons to spend an afternoon at the hotel.

Before booking, keep in mind that the hotel is in Água d’Alto, rather than Caloura itself. It also has more of a traditional resort feel, which is ideal if you’d like your hotel to be part of the holiday experience, too.

In terms of pricing, you can expect rates to range from €180 to €380+ per night, with summer dates and sea-view options often sitting at the higher end of that range.

ANC Resort – $$

ANC Experience Resort in Caloura Sao Miguel Portugal

ANC Experience Resort in Caloura Sao Miguel Portugal 1

For our mid-range pick near Caloura, we always recommend ANC Resort, an apartment-style property perfect for families and longer stays.

The kitchen facilities are a big perk here. You can make breakfast at your own pace, keep beach snacks handy, or enjoy an easy dinner in after a busy day of exploring. There’s also an outdoor pool, tennis court, restaurant, and bar, so self-catering doesn’t mean you’ll be missing out on those holiday extras!

If you do choose to stay here, we definitely recommend having a rental car, as restaurants, swimming spots, and attractions along this stretch of coast are spread out. Budget approximately €70 to €250+ per night, depending on your dates and apartment type.

Caloura Hotel Resort is another oceanfront option we love in this area. It sits in a protected coastal setting and offers direct sea access, a pool, a sauna, and rooms facing the water.

If you’d rather stay in Vila Franca do Campo, Olive Boutique Guesthouse is also a lovely choice. This small, stylish property has a pool and a more intimate atmosphere than the larger coastal resorts.

Pousada da Vila – $

Last but not least, for our budget-friendly pick in Vila Franca do Campo, we absolutely love Pousada da Vila. The rooms are simple, but the central location is a big plus. You can stroll to nearby restaurants in the evening, pick up essentials around town, and reach the marina for summer boat trips to Vila Franca Islet.

Back at the guesthouse, shared spaces give you somewhere to unwind, and the communal kitchen is handy for making a quick breakfast before an early start. In our opinion, it’s a perfect fit for anyone looking to spend more time enjoying São Miguel than hanging around their hotel.

As for pricing, you can expect rates for this hotel to typically start around €60 per night. Like other budget options, we definitely recommend booking this hotel as early as possible if you plan to visit during peak summer season.

If Pousada da Vila is all booked up on your preferred dates, Casa Caloura Ocean Deluxe is another budget-friendly option worth checking out. It’s only about a 25-minute walk from the beach and has a gorgeous rooftop swimming pool!

Renting a Car in Europe

A coastal road winding through Mallorca, Spain

Exploring Europe by car is a fantastic way to uncover hidden gems—think charming villages, scenic countryside, and off-the-beaten-path spots that trains and buses might miss. Driving here is generally straightforward, but it’s good to be prepared for some regional quirks.

We always use Discover Cars to book our rentals and can’t recommend them enough. It’s super easy to compare prices, check company ratings, find automatic cars (which can be tricky in Europe!), and add affordable full coverage insurance. If you want a full breakdown, check out our Discover Cars review here.

Tips for Renting a Car in Europe

  • Know the local rules: Most countries drive on the right, except the UK, Ireland, Cyprus, and Malta. Road signs and driving laws can vary, so do a quick check before you go.
  • Practice defensive driving: In parts of Europe, especially in the south, driving can feel fast-paced and a little unpredictable. Make sure you stay alert and keep a safe following distance.
  • Insurance is essential: I highly recommend adding full coverage insurance to your rental. Whether it’s a parking lot ding or a chipped windshield on a mountain road, full protection gives you peace of mind. Plus, it’s super affordable through Discover Cars!
  • Pick the right vehicle: Most rentals in Europe are manual, and automatic cars are limited, so book early if that’s what you need. A compact car is also ideal for narrow roads and tight parking. On Discover Cars, you can easily filter for everything you need.
  • Watch for restricted zones: Many cities have low-emission or restricted traffic zones. Driving into these without a permit can result in fines, so always check local rules if you’re heading into a city center.
  • Be prepared for border crossings: While crossing borders is usually easy within the Schengen Zone, some rental companies require you to declare your travel plans in advance. Always check with Discover Cars if you’re planning to drive into another country.

What You Need to Rent a Car in Europe

  • A valid driver’s license from your home country.
  • If you’re from outside the EU, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended—and in some countries, it’s legally required.
  • A credit card in the driver’s name is typically needed for the security deposit.
  • Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old. If you’re under 25, expect a young driver surcharge—and in some countries, the minimum age may be higher.

AIRALO e-SIM Up To 15% Off With Code “DTRAVEL15”

What’s an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital version of a SIM card. Instead of buying a little plastic chip and swapping it into your phone, you just download it. It connects your phone to a local network in whatever country you’re visiting — no stores, no waiting, and no fiddling with tiny cards.

In simple terms, it’s the easiest way to get data and stay connected while traveling.

We’ve tested a bunch of eSIMs over the years, and after a few frustrating experiences, we’ve found our favorite — Airalo. It’s fast, reliable, and incredibly easy to use. You can set it up in minutes (even my mom managed it solo on her first try!), and the prices are some of the best out there.
