There are three main choices: on the lagoon, in the town center, or tucked away in a quiet resort. Our personal FAVORITE area to stay in Bacalar is Lagoon Front! It’s right on the “Lagoon of Seven Colors,” so you can literally roll out of bed and into the water.
We loved staying at Hotel Aldea 19 Bacalar. Its simple rooms, dreamy views, sea swings, and a private pier made it unforgettable!
Overview of the Best Areas to Stay in Bacalar
Bacalar may be small, but it’s built along one of Mexico’s most breathtaking natural wonders: the famous “Lagoon of Seven Colors.” The town itself is compact and easy to navigate, which makes exploring a breeze, but where you choose to stay can really shape your trip.
Most hotels are either in the lively town center or directly on the lagoon’s edge, where you’ll find wooden docks perfect for swimming or kayaking. A few quieter residential areas and luxury resorts sit just outside town, giving you a more private escape. As for getting around, the city center is walkable, and taxis are easy to grab if you’re staying near the lagoon. Renting a bike is also a fun way to get around!
- Lagoon Front – This is the most iconic spot in Bacalar, where hotels and cabanas line the crystal-clear water and offer private piers for swimming and kayaking—yes, please! Hotel Aldea 19 Bacalar is our favorite hotel, not just in this area but in Bacalar altogether.
- Bacalar City Center – Centered around the lively zócalo and the San Felipe Fort, this is where you’ll find restaurants, bars, and budget hostels. Hotel Circulo Bacalar is a stylish pick right in the heart of town.
- Outside Bacalar – Along the highway north and south of town, you’ll find secluded eco-resorts which offer privacy, spa amenities, and lagoon access, though you’ll need a car! Mi Kasa Tu Kasa Bacalar offers a peaceful stay at a reasonable price.
Important Tip
Multiple Bacalar trips have taught us that this city doesn’t reward spontaneity when it comes to planning. The good places get snapped up months in advance, leaving the overpriced and underwhelming options for last-minute travelers.
The sweet spot for booking Bacalar accommodations is 3-4 months out—enough time to secure good rates but not so far ahead that you’re locking in plans excessively early.
Where to Stay in Bacalar
Lagoon Front
The Lagoon Front is the most iconic place to stay in Bacalar and the reason many travelers come here in the first place! It stretches along the famous “Lagoon of Seven Colors” and it’s lined with hotels, cabanas, and boutique stays that open right onto the water—and yes, it’s every bit as dreamy as it sounds.
This is the most popular part of Bacalar to stay in, and it’s where we opted to stay. After all, most people come here to enjoy views of the turquoise water and spend afternoons kayaking on the lagoon, or relaxing on a private dock with a book and a cold drink!
Naturally, the lagoon itself is the star attraction of this area. Lots of hotels have their own private piers, and you can always find kayaks and paddleboards for rent. It’s also easy to find boat tours to take you to see highlights like the Black Cenote and Isla de los Pájaros. Staying on the lagoon also means you’re close to the Canal de los Piratas, a shallow sandbar, which is an amazing swimming spot.
If, like us, you’re in Bacalar to soak in the natural beauty and enjoy some well-earned rest and relaxation, we think that the Lagoon Front is the clear choice!

Hotel CasaBakal – $$$
Hotel CasaBakal is one of the most stylish stays right on Bacalar’s lagoon. This boutique hotel combines luxury with an eco-friendly design, offering sumptuous suites and bungalows with direct lagoon views. There are hammocks strung above the water, a pool overlooking the turquoise lagoon, and a private pier for swimming or launching a kayak. This property sums up everything that’s great about staying at the Lagoon Front!
It also has a restaurant and bar on site, so you don’t have to wander far for meals or sunset drinks. There’s a relaxed and social vibe here, and we think it makes a great pick for pretty much anyone, from families and groups of friends to couples and solo travelers. Rooms usually range between $200 and $650 USD per night.

Hotel Aldea 19 Bacalar – $$
Hotel Aldea 19 Bacalar is a charming choice with a prime lagoonfront location. The rooms are pretty simple, but they offer balconies overlooking the sparkling water. What sets this hotel apart is its direct access to the lagoon: you can step right onto the pier or hop straight into a kayak.
We loved staying here, and we both remarked that this property was pretty much made for Instagram. There are sea swings, a gorgeous pool, and stunning views everywhere you look, so it’s difficult not to snap a photo every five seconds!
It really does strike a nice balance between affordability and comfort, with the added bonus of staying right on the lagoon. Prices typically range from $170 to $280 USD per night.

Bacalar My Love Front Laguna – $
Bacalar My Love Front Laguna may be a budget-friendly stay, but it’s also a super appealing choice for travelers who want to be close to nature. The property offers rustic wooden bungalows and rooms, and you’ll wake up with direct views of the turquoise water.
This small guesthouse has a welcoming, homey feel, and the staff are known for their friendly hospitality. The free bicycle rentals are a very nice touch! In fact, you can cycle into town in about 10 minutes from here. Honestly, if you’re looking for value for money, this place is hard to beat. Rooms usually cost between $65 and $200 USD per night.

Bacalar City Center
Bacalar’s lagoon is undeniably stunning, but if you want to party, then Bacalar’s city center is the place to stay. This area is centered around the zócalo (main square) and the San Felipe Fort, which overlooks the lagoon and has a small museum about the town’s history. The streets here are lined with colorful murals and taco stands, so if you’re looking for a fun and social stay, we think you’ll feel at home here!
While we personally prefer to stay by the lagoon, we still enjoy coming into the city center to check out the lively cafes and restaurants. It’s also a more affordable area, and there’s a larger range of budget-friendly choices to be found here. And if you’re traveling solo, you’ll be in good company as this area is popular among backpackers.
The trade-off is that there’s no direct lagoon access, but you’ve still got public balnearios (swimming spots) nearby. It’s also a convenient place to stay if you’re arriving (or leaving) Bacalar by bus, since the ADO terminal is just a short walk away.
While it lacks the epic beauty of the lagoon front, Bacalar City Center can be a fun and affordable place to stay. If your priorities are great food and nightlife rather than waking up right by the water, base yourself here!

Hotel Makaabá Eco-Boutique – $$$
Hotel Makaabá Eco-Boutique is a stylish boutique hotel right in the heart of Bacalar. If you’re looking for luxury but want to be close to the action, I have a feeling you might like this place! The rooms are spacious with natural design touches.
There’s a laid-back vibe here, and there’s a pretty outdoor pool and tropical garden. It definitely feels like an eco-retreat, but it’s just a few minutes walk from the town’s most exciting bars, and there’s a beach club just a 15-minute bike ride away. Prices typically range between $80 and $400 USD per night, including a delicious breakfast.

Hotel Circulo Bacalar – $$
Hotel Circulo Bacalar is a well-rated hotel located just a few blocks from the main square. The rooms have a clean, beachy aesthetic with light-up mirrors and a few wall hangings to add some character. We love the pool area, which has loungers and hammocks for guests to use.
And since the hotel is so close to the main square, there are tons of shops and restaurants right on your doorstep. Perhaps best of all, there’s a spa that offers massages and wellness packages at very reasonable prices, which is just what you need after a late night in the city center! Rates usually fall between $120 and $350 USD per night.

Hotel Sur Bacalar – $
Hotel Sur Bacalar is a simple hotel right in the city center. The rooms are basic, but they’re clean and cheerful, offering a reliable place to stay for travelers who want to keep costs low. There’s a relaxed, friendly atmosphere, and the location can’t be beat.
Staying here puts you steps from the zócalo, bars, and tons of street food, and it’s easy to walk or cycle to the public swimming spots nearby. Rooms typically cost between $65 and $160 USD per night, including a complimentary breakfast and free cancellation.

Outside Bacalar
If you want to experience true peace and privacy in Bacalar, then we actually recommend staying outside Bacalar. There are a few different areas located along the highway north and south of town where you can find secluded resorts that sit on the lagoon or are surrounded by lush vegetation.
In terms of what’s available outside Bacalar, there are eco-resorts, boutique hotels, and private villas that offer a hidden escape. Many properties have private docks, kayaks, and even on-site spas, so you can spend your days swimming, paddleboarding, or lounging by the water without leaving the hotel. If you want to get off the grid and relax away from the busier town center, this is ideal.
If you stay outside Bacalar, we strongly recommend renting a car as you’ll be a short drive from the restaurants and shops. Having your own wheels will give you a lot more freedom! Popular nearby sights include the Canal de los Piratas, Isla de los Pájaros, and the Black Cenote, all of which are easily accessible by boat or car.
We think that this area is best for couples on a romantic trip or families looking for a tranquil vacation. If you’re seeking serenity, staying outside Bacalar is the way to go.

Puerta del Cielo Hotel Origen – $$$
Puerta del Cielo Hotel Origen is a luxurious retreat tucked along Bacalar’s lagoon, offering stunning views and a serene atmosphere. The rooms are spacious and elegantly decorated with natural materials, which creates a modern yet organic feel.
Most rooms and suites also feature private terraces or balconies overlooking the water, which is ideal for relaxing in privacy and catching a beautiful Bacalar sunset. The hotel also has a restaurant, bar, and spa facilities, so you don’t need to leave the property if you don’t want to!
We love the fact that there are hammocks and lounge areas right on the lagoon. In fact, we would spend our honeymoon here if we hadn’t already had it! Prices usually range between $225 and $500 USD per night.

Mi Kasa Tu Kasa Bacalar – $$
Mi Kasa Tu Kasa Bacalar is a comfortable and quiet option outside the main town. It’s perfect for families or groups who want a tranquil stay on the lagoon that won’t cost a bomb! The rooms are simple yet stylish, with bright, airy interiors and outdoor seating areas to enjoy the water views.
We like this place because it has a very “Robinson Crusoe” vibe, with lots of thatched roofs, a small pool, and a private pier. While you’ll need a car or taxi to reach restaurants and shops, the setting more than makes up for it. Rooms typically range from $115 to $325 USD per night.

Xcabal Hotel boutique – $
Xcabal Hotel boutique is a budget-friendly option for travelers who want to stay outside Bacalar but still enjoy the lagoon. The rooms are basic but clean and comfortable, with colorful décor that fits the relaxed vibe of the area. The hotel offers a small dock for swimming, as well as hammocks and lounge areas to soak in the views.
While there aren’t many dining options within walking distance, it’s a peaceful base for anyone with a car or bike. If you like rustic beachy vibes, you’ll love this place! Rooms usually cost between $65 and $300 USD per night, although suites can go up to $400 USD.

Renting a Car in Mexico
Undoubtedly, one of the best ways to get around Mexico is in a rental car.
I struggled to get around by bus and taxi for the longest time. But after renting a car in Cancun in 2023, I never looked back. It allowed me to explore the country without worrying about tours or taxis. It was why I fell in love with Mexico and eventually decided to live here periodically.
I refuse to use local services whenever I rent a car in Mexico. The truth is they sometimes can’t be trusted or come with hidden fees (or costly insurance that doesn’t make sense.) There are even rental car scams! So instead, I use Discover Cars, the company most experienced travelers or ex-pats in Mexico recommend. Read my honest review of Discover Cars here for more details!
The rates on Discover Cars are cheap, too, with the average rental costing around $25 USD per day. Full coverage insurance can be added for an extra $10 USD a day too.
Driving in Mexico also only requires a driver’s license using the Roman alphabet. If yours uses another like Japan and China, you simply need an international driving permit.
Insurance is required, but if you book with Discover Cars and get the full coverage, that’s all you need! Oh, and being over 18 is required, and if you’re over 25, your rental will be much cheaper!
