Catalina Coffee & Cookie Co., tucked just a couple of blocks from the waterfront, opens bright and early at 6 am—ideal if you’re catching a morning tour or want to beat the crowds to the beach.

The smell of fresh-baked cookies alone lured us in, but it was the breakfast bagels that had us wanting to come back the next morning. Perfectly toasted and loaded with savory goodness, they were hearty enough to fuel us for a full day of exploring. If you’re craving something sweeter, the pastries are just as tempting—and pair beautifully with their strong, smooth coffee!

Morning – Get to know Avalon on a private guided golf cart tour

After breakfast, we were ready to explore, but walking Catalina’s hills in the sun didn’t sound like the most relaxing way to do it. So we booked this private golf cart tour instead, and it ended up being one of the highlights of our entire trip.

We recommend the 9:15 am option—it gives you plenty of time after breakfast and fits perfectly with the rest of the day. Our guide, Dudley, picked us up right on time and instantly set the tone for the morning: chill, funny, and full of stories we’d never heard before.

By the time we rolled through the Botanical Gardens and stopped by the Dive History Exhibit, we felt like Catalina regulars.

Lunch/Early afternoon – Taste your way around Catalina Island

After one too many overpriced seafood platters and forgettable beachside burgers, we finally figured out how to eat well on Catalina, and this walking food tour was the answer. Kicking off at 11:45 am from Old Ben Park, the tour lasts about 2.5 hours and serves up not just incredible bites, but also a fresh look at Avalon’s culture, history, and local hangouts.

You won’t have to stress about making it in time either. The morning tour can drop you off wherever you need, so they took us right to Old Ben Park!

We followed our guide (shoutout to Janet, who was absolutely fantastic!) through Avalon’s colorful streets, learning about the island’s early 20th-century tilework and stories behind its historic buildings. 

Between stops, we weaved past sunlit storefronts and quiet alleyways that felt far from the usual tourist trail. Along the way, we stopped at six tasting spots—none of which we’d have thought to visit on our own. 

Catalina Charlie’s spicy shrimp tacos were an instant favorite, El Galleon served buttery fish bites and paired drinks, and Lloyd’s surprised us with a house-made treat that totally caught us off guard. And yes, we ended it all with a beer float, which sounds wild, but somehow totally worked.

With only 10 people in our group, it felt like a foodie stroll with friends. The mix of flavors, views, and storytelling made it an effortless win! There was space to ask questions, linger at stops, and actually savor everything, not just the food, but the feeling of being part of the island’s rhythm.

We’d packed a lot into the morning and early afternoon, so this is your time to slow things down and take Catalina at a gentler pace. No schedules, no rushing—just soaking in Avalon’s laid-back charm however you want. Whether you’re in the mood to shop, wander, or tuck into a quiet museum, this part of the day is all about recharging Catalina-style.

Stroll along Crescent Avenue, Avalon’s palm-lined pedestrian thoroughfare. This charming strip is packed with boutique shops, art galleries, and quirky souvenir spots. We loved poking into places like Lloyd’s of Avalon for sweet treats (don’t skip the saltwater taffy) and Bay of Seven Moons for one-of-a-kind gifts and keepsakes. Whether you’re browsing for a treasure or just window shopping with an ice cream in hand, this little avenue is the heart of Avalon’s small-town charm.

Visit the Catalina Island Museum for Art & History

Just a short walk from the waterfront, this small but beautifully curated museum is the perfect way to learn more about the island beyond the beaches. Inside, you’ll find fascinating exhibits on the Tongva people, Catalina’s role during the golden age of Hollywood, and the legacy of the Wrigley family. There’s usually a rotating art exhibit, too, which keeps things fresh for return visitors.

Dinner – Bluewater Avalon

We wrapped up our first day with a sunset dinner at Bluewater Avalon, one of the island’s most scenic waterfront restaurants. Set at the end of Crescent Avenue, this open-air spot serves up sweeping views of Avalon Bay, especially gorgeous as the sun dips behind the hills. The vibe is relaxed but polished, and the sea breeze makes dining outside a must.

The menu focuses on fresh coastal California seafood, and everything we tried hit the mark. The clam chowder in a sourdough bowl was rich and comforting, while the grilled swordfish and ahi poke offered lighter, vibrant flavors. Evening – Stroll the Waterfront or catch a show

After dinner, we kept things simple with a stroll along Avalon’s waterfront promenade. With boats bobbing in the bay and the lights starting to twinkle across the harbor, it’s one of the most peaceful ways to wind down. The air cools off just enough to be refreshing, and the palm-lined path is perfect for stretching your legs after a big meal.

If you’re in the mood for a bit more action, check out the evening screening at the historic Catalina Casino Theater. This iconic Art Deco building is worth visiting for its architecture alone.

Prefer something sweet instead? Swing by Sailor’s Delight for an ice cream cone (or two) and take it down to the beach for a low-key dessert with a view. However you wrap up the night, Avalon’s charm doesn’t fade after dark—it just gets quieter and a little more magical.

Day 2

Breakfast – Try the best pancakes in town at Pancake Cottage

Start day two the right way, with a short walk to The Pancake Cottage, home to what might just be the best pancakes in Avalon. Located right by the water, this cozy, no-frills spot opens at 7 am, but we showed up around 8:30 and found a small line already forming. It moves fairly quickly, but give yourself a little buffer just in case. It’s clearly a local favorite for a reason!

Once we sat down, the smell of syrup and sizzling bacon sealed the deal. The pancakes were fluffy and golden, just the way they should be, and the portions were generous. Whether you go sweet with classic stacks and whipped cream or opt for something heartier with eggs and sausage on the side, you’ll leave ready to take on another day of Catalina adventures.

Morning – Go wild on a Catalina Safari

We’d heard whispers about Catalina’s rugged interior, but it wasn’t until we climbed into a custom safari-style vehicle on this 2-hour tour and headed 10 miles inland that we truly understood just how wild the island could get. Beachy Avalon faded behind us as we bounced into the hills, headed for remote backcountry that most visitors never even realize is there.

There are plenty of departure times throughout the day, but we opted for the 10:10 am tour—late enough to enjoy a relaxed breakfast but early enough to catch plenty of wildlife on the move. 

Our guide, Sergio, made the ride even better. He was the perfect mix of funny and knowledgeable, keeping us entertained as we spotted deer, bison, and even the elusive Catalina Island fox (yes, we actually saw one!). The ride was a bit bumpy, but in the best way, like off-roading through a postcard.

We climbed all the way up to the Airport-in-the-Sky, with stops for panoramic views and spontaneous wildlife sightings.

At the top, we visited the Catalina Island Conservancy’s Nature Center and stood at a historic gathering site once used by Native Americans. Even better? Knowing that part of our ticket supports conservation efforts across the island.

This tour showed us a side of Catalina we never expected—raw, remote, and totally unforgettable. It felt like stepping into another world, just beyond Avalon, and reminded us how much more this island has to offer once you leave the shoreline behind.

Lunch – The Lobster Trap

After our inland safari adventure, we were more than ready to refuel, and The Lobster Trap hit the spot. This laid-back, no-frills joint is a favorite with both locals and visitors, and it’s easy to see why. Just a few blocks from the waterfront, it’s the kind of place where you can roll in a little dusty and still feel right at home.

The menu is packed with coastal classics, like fish tacos, clam chowder, and grilled seafood platters, but there are plenty of non-seafood options too if you’re craving something different. We split an order of blackened fish tacos, oysters, and a bowl of chowder – both were fresh, flavorful, and generously portioned. It’s casual, satisfying, and exactly the kind of meal you want after a morning of bumpy roads and wildlife spotting.

Early afternoon – Go underwater without getting wet at the IMMERSED Dome Theater

After a morning of bumpy roads and wildlife sightings, we were ready to cool off and slow things down, and this immersive dome theater experience was the perfect reset. 

We booked the 2:30 pm time slot, but there are a few afternoon showings to choose from. Aim for the 2 or 2:30 pm option to keep your day flowing smoothly. Just keep in mind that the dome is closed on Thursdays, so plan ahead if you’re hoping to fit this in!

This 30-minute experience felt less like a film screening and more like deep-sea teleportation. We kicked back in comfy seats (you can even opt for beanbags) as 8K underwater footage lit up the 360-degree dome overhead. It was like a planetarium reimagined for ocean lovers!

We drifted through kelp forests, watched swirling bait balls shimmer in the light, and came face-to-face with creatures like whale sharks and dugongs—all narrated with soothing music and mindful commentary. It felt more like a guided ocean meditation than a typical documentary, and the air conditioning was a welcome bonus.

To ease into the late afternoon, we headed to the Wrigley Memorial & Botanic Garden—an ideal spot to stretch your legs and soak up Catalina’s quieter side. Tucked into Avalon Canyon, the garden trails are lined with native Channel Islands plants, sun-loving cacti, and hidden corners that make it easy to slow down and just enjoy the scenery.

You can walk up from town (it’s about a 30-minute uphill stroll) or grab a quick taxi if your feet need a break. At the top, the Wrigley Memorial stands like a serene island overlook, offering panoramic views and a peaceful space to reflect on your trip. To end the trip on a high note, we made one last stop at the Marlin Club, Avalon’s oldest bar and a local favorite that’s big on character. It’s the kind of place where you can kick back with a strong drink, play a round of pool, and swap stories with friendly regulars under the glow of neon signs.

No frills, no fuss—just a solid, laid-back bar that feels like a Catalina rite of passage. Whether you’re toasting a weekend well spent or squeezing in one more slice of island life before heading home, the Marlin Club is a classic way to wrap things up with a bit of local flavor.
