Itinerary Overview
San Miguel de Allende is a vibrant colonial city known for its local art scene, bustling markets, iconic landmarks like the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, and an outstanding food culture. This three-day itinerary offers a well-paced mix of culture, sightseeing, and unforgettable meals so you can experience the best of the city without feeling rushed.
San Miguel de Allende is highly walkable and doesn’t require a rental car, with Ubers and taxis available for longer trips, and while it’s generally very safe, it’s best to stay in the main areas and use caution at night.
Here is a breakdown of each day and what to expect from each:
Day 1: Visit the Botanical Gardens, see the city from El Mirador, check out the Museo Histórico, and get to know the city on a private walking tour, all before ending with rooftop drinks and dinner.
Day 2: Start by exploring the ruins of Cañada de La Virgen, followed by wandering through local markets to browse locally made art and crafts. After dinner at one of our favorite hidden spots, head to Calle Aldama and see the city lit up at night.
Day 3: See the countryside on a horseback tour to Coyote Canyon (and local hot springs!) before heading back to town to spend an afternoon exploring on your own. Finally, end your trip with a legendary tacos and tequila tour.
Day 1
Morning – Check out the Botanical Gardens
Botanical gardens are something we always make a point of visiting, and we think they’re a great way to see local flora and fauna without having to commit to a big hike or tour.
Jardín Botánico El Charco del Ingenio is a protected natural reserve just outside San Miguel de Allende, showcasing native cacti, desert plants, and expansive views of the surrounding landscape. You can explore walking trails, wetlands, and scenic overlooks while learning about the region’s ecology and conservation efforts. It’s a great spot for nature lovers and photographers alike!
We recommend getting here when it opens at 9 am so you can spend 2-3 hours seeing everything and beat the heat. Just keep in mind it’s about a 15-minute drive from the city center, so you’ll need to get an Uber or taxi. Admission is $100 MXN ($5.50 USD), and you can pay with cash or card.
Late morning – El Mirador
After visiting the Botanical Gardens, take another 15-minute ride to El Mirador and soak up the incredible views of the city.
There are two things we love about El Mirador. It’s free (yay!), and from here it’s an easy 20-minute walk downhill and back into the city center. If, for some reason, you can’t fit this in today or aren’t feeling like it, you will have some free time on day 3 if you’d like to come back.
Lunch – Mamá Mela
By this point, you’ll likely have worked up an appetite (I know we had), so make your way to Mamá Mela for some of the best burritos in the city. We love that this spot offers classics as well as vegan and vegetarian options for those who don’t eat meat.
As a bonus, this is right next door to our next stop of the day, the history museum, making it convenient and delicious!
Afternoon – Museo Histórico Casa de Allende
After lunch, head over to the Museo Histórico Casa de Allende for a look into Mexico’s fight for independence from the very house where revolutionary leader Ignacio Allende was born and raised.
With exhibits on his life, the local history of San Miguel el Grande, and recreated rooms showing daily life in the 18th century. Inside, you’ll find artifacts, documents, multimedia displays, and period rooms that bring the town’s colonial history and role in the independence movement to life.
The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm, and admission is very affordable at $75 MXN ($4 USD), but when we went, it was cash only, so make sure to have some with you.
Late afternoon – See the city on a private walking tour
Now that you’ve gotten a feel for San Miguel de Allende, it’s time to see it like a local. This private walking tour was one of the best ways we could have explored the city, offering an understanding of its history, culture, and everyday life that we couldn’t have gotten otherwise.
We recommend booking the 3–5 pm option, so you have time for the activities before, as well as time to enjoy dinner and drinks afterwards. The meeting point is conveniently located just an 8-minute walk from the history museum, so it’s easy to fit into the schedule.
Because this is a private tour, you get to experience San Miguel’s historic streets at a relaxed, personalized pace. Our guide, Leo, was truly a highlight—knowledgeable, engaging, and clearly passionate about his hometown.
He brought the city’s stories to life as we explored major sights like El Jardín, the central plaza that serves as the heart of San Miguel, and its crown jewel, the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, which ended up being our favorite stop. A fun fact: the church’s iconic neo-Gothic façade was inspired by European cathedrals and largely designed by local builders working from memory rather than formal plans.
From there, we wandered through the colonial streets, learning why San Miguel de Allende is both a Pueblo Mágico and a UNESCO World Heritage city. With Leo’s insights, thoughtful storytelling, and local tips, this private tour was a fantastic experience and a fun way to connect with San Miguel beyond the surface.

Sunset – Drinks at Luna Rooftop
After your walking tour, head on over to Luna Rooftop for amazing sunset views and even better drinks. Dinner is only a 4-minute walk away, so enjoy a margarita (or two, who’s counting anyway?) and sink into San Miguel’s legendary evening scene.
Dinner – Hecho en México
After you’re finished with cocktails, make the short walk to Hecho en México for one of our favorite local dinner spots. Reservations usually aren’t required, but it’s a good idea to arrive early or expect a short wait during peak dinner hours.
This place serves up classic dishes as well as reinventions of all your favorites in a cozy, but lively atmosphere. You really can’t go wrong with anything, so grab some food, practice your Spanish with the staff, and enjoy!
Tomorrow, your tour to explore ancient ruins doesn’t start until 9 am, so feel free to hit another bar on your way back to your hotel if you’d like. Just stay safe!
Day 2
Mid-day – See ancient ruins at Cañada de La Virgen
Today, you’ll be doing some adventuring to ancient sites with a bit of walking (roughly 3 kilometers/2 miles), so be sure to fuel up and dress appropriately. It’s an experience you don’t want to miss!
The tour to the Cañada de la Virgen Pyramid is a must-do for anyone who loves history, ancient civilizations, and nature. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, blending hands-on exploration with deep historical insight.
We met our small group in town before departing right at 9 am for the roughly 45-minute drive to the archaeological site. Once there, we were greeted by our expert archaeologist guide, whose passion for the ancient civilization that once called this place home made every rock and ruin feel alive.
The ceremonial center was built by the Otomí people between 540–1050 AD and aligned with astronomical events, a reminder of how sophisticated this culture was long before Spanish contact. Hiking through the desert, we learned about ancient rituals and the significance of each structure as we went. Our favorite moment was climbing to the top of the main pyramid, where we were treated to incredible views of the surrounding area.
The tour wrapped up around 2 pm, and we felt like it was the perfect amount of time to take in everything while not being in the hot sun for too long. With all entrance fees included and an expert guide to illuminate the past, this experience is a must for history lovers and curious travelers alike. Just be sure to plan accordingly, as the site is closed on Mondays.

Lunch – Clásico San Miguel
After spending all that time in the desert and hiking up and down ancient pyramids, I think you’ve deserved a hearty lunch. There are no more time-sensitive activities today, so if you want, head back to your hotel first to shower.
Once you’re ready, head to Clásico San Miguel for some good ol’ fashioned Mexican food served in a relaxed, casual setting. Think generous portions, familiar flavors done well, and a menu that’s easy to love after a long morning. If, for some reason, you aren’t feeling like Mexican food, they also make some great burgers!
It’s also a convenient stop, since you’ll be right near the historic center and within easy walking distance of San Miguel’s best markets and galleries.
Afternoon – Check out local markets and art
San Miguel is known for its locally made crafts and vibrant art scene, and wandering the markets is one of our favorite ways to soak it all in. From Clásico San Miguel, you can reach many of the main art markets and galleries in 5–10 minutes on foot, making this an easy, low-effort afternoon plan.
Chances are, you might have already wandered through one of these markets on a tour already, so feel free to skip one or just spend more time shopping. Even if you don’t plan on buying, they’re a blast to explore!
- Mercado de Artesanías – This large and well-known artisan market is one of the best places in San Miguel de Allende to shop for handmade souvenirs, from pottery and textiles to jewelry and folk art. It’s lively, colorful, and perfect for picking up unique gifts to bring home.
- Ignacio Ramírez Market – Located right next to the Mercado de Artesanías, this local market sells just about everything, with a strong focus on food. It’s a great spot to try authentic local dishes, grab a casual meal, or sample fresh juices and snacks.
- Fábrica La Aurora – Once a historic textile mill, Fábrica La Aurora has been transformed into a vibrant art and design center filled with galleries, studios, and cafés. It’s slightly outside the Zona Centro, but well worth the trip for art lovers and anyone looking for a more modern creative scene.
- Discover local galleries and boutiques – San Miguel de Allende is packed with art galleries, boutiques, and independent shops tucked along its colorful streets. You can easily spend a few hours wandering, shopping, and soaking in the city’s creative energy and charming atmosphere.
Dinner – Agavia 115
Agavia 115 is a tucked-away spot that somehow still flies under the radar in San Miguel’s food scene. With incredible service, locally sourced ingredients, and high-quality meals that don’t skimp on portion size, it’s become our go-to dinner spot every time we’re in town. The cozy dining room and rooftop seating make it feel special without being stuffy. Reservations aren’t usually required, but they’re a good idea on busy nights. Just note that Agavia 115 is closed on Tuesdays, so plan accordingly. You can thank us later!
Evening – Explore Calle Aldama
After dinner, take a walk over to Calle Aldama to enjoy a charming part of town that has tons of live music, small hole-in-the-wall bars, and eateries if you’re still craving more great food. It’s a nice spot to people-watch or find a local watering hole and enjoy the vibe.
However, if there is one thing not to be missed here, it is Chocolates y Churros San Agustín for some dessert! As you might have guessed, they serve up some mouth-watering chocolate, churros, and ice cream. If you’re feeling crazy, you can combine all three!
Day 3
Morning – Go horseback riding
Kick off your day with an unforgettable horseback riding adventure through the rugged landscapes of Coyote Canyon, one of the most scenic areas just outside San Miguel de Allende.
The tour runs from approximately 9 am to 2 pm, with a convenient meeting point in central San Miguel, making it an easy half-day excursion without the need to plan transportation yourself. After meeting your guides and getting matched with your horse, you’ll head out into the canyon, riding along wide desert paths surrounded by dramatic rock formations, open skies, and sweeping views of the countryside.
The ride itself is suitable for a range of experience levels, and the guides do a great job of making everyone feel comfortable while sharing insight into the local environment and history along the way. Our favorite part of this experience was how peaceful it felt to be on horseback, far from the city, taking in a completely different side of the region.
We highly recommend booking the option that includes the hot springs—soaking in the warm, mineral-rich pools after the ride was the perfect way to unwind and easily one of the highlights of the day.

Renting a Car in Mexico
Undoubtedly, one of the best ways to get around Mexico is in a rental car.
I struggled to get around by bus and taxi for the longest time. But after renting a car in Cancun in 2023, I never looked back. It allowed me to explore the country without worrying about tours or taxis. It was why I fell in love with Mexico and eventually decided to live here periodically.
I refuse to use local services whenever I rent a car in Mexico. The truth is they sometimes can’t be trusted or come with hidden fees (or costly insurance that doesn’t make sense.) The rates on Discover Cars are cheap, too, with the average rental costing around $25 USD per day. Full coverage insurance can be added for an extra $10 USD a day too.
Driving in Mexico also only requires a driver’s license using the Roman alphabet. If yours uses another like Japan and China, you simply need an international driving permit.
Insurance is required, but if you book with Discover Cars and get the full coverage, that’s all you need! Oh, and being over 18 is required, and if you’re over 25, your rental will be much cheaper!
