Our personal FAVORITE thing we did was this private wooden boat tour on Lake Como! There’s no better way to experience the lake than cruising around in a traditional-style boat, taking in the views along the way.
Day 1
Breakfast – Bliss Cafè
Bliss Cafè is a sweet little breakfast stop tucked just 7 minutes from the tour meeting point—ideal for easing into your Lake Como adventure. It opens at 7:30 am, which gave us just enough time to settle in with a warm cappuccino and one of their buttery croissants before heading out.
It had all the classic Italian breakfast vibes: simple, satisfying, and just the right way to start the day. Just keep in mind that they’re closed on Sundays, so plan accordingly if you’re kicking things off then!
Morning – Sail on Lake Como in a private wooden boat
With breakfast behind us and the lake sparkling nearby, we set off on this private cruise aboard La Navicella del Lario, and it felt like something straight out of an Italian film. The classic Venetian-style wooden boat, with polished wood and leather seats, was timeless, elegant, and effortlessly photogenic.
We recommend the 4-hour tour starting at 9:15 am (though they offer multiple start times if you need something later). Four hours gave us plenty of time to relax and take in highlights like Villa Olmo, the ultra-luxe Villa d’Este, and even the former estate of Gianni Versace—all from the water.
Captain Andreas couldn’t have been better! He was friendly, professional, and knew everything about the lake. He tailored the route to our interests and even pointed out lesser-known villas and tucked-away villages we would have never spotted on our own.
If you’re after a sleeker ride, ask about Sophie, a newer Venetian-style boat with rich mahogany interiors, leather cushions, and even a heated cabin for those cooler mornings.

Lunch at Passion Como landed in the sweet spot between cozy and contemporary, and it was just what we needed after a breezy morning on the lake. Set in the heart of Como’s historic center, this place was a quick stroll from the boat drop-off and perfectly placed for our afternoon of exploring.
The menu leans modern Mediterranean, with fresh pastas, creative salads, and just enough local flair to remind you you’re still in Italy. We grabbed a shady table outside, recapped the morning over lunch, and refueled in style before heading deeper into the old town.
Afternoon – Check out Como and its historic places
Spend your afternoon wandering Como’s historic center. It’s like stepping into a postcard. Cobblestone streets, grand piazzas, and centuries-old architecture set the scene for a few leisurely hours of exploration. After lunch, plan to explore on foot and take in some of the city’s standout landmarks at your own pace.
Duomo di Como
Start your afternoon in the heart of Como’s old town with a visit to the Duomo di Como. This Gothic masterpiece is the crown jewel of the city, and it’s easy to see why—it’s grand, intricately detailed, and beautifully preserved. Step inside to admire the high vaulted ceilings, stained glass, and historic tapestries lining the nave.
Right next door, you’ll find the Palazzo del Broletto, Como’s former town hall. With its striped stone walls and Romanesque-Gothic blend, it’s one of those buildings that makes you stop and stare. It’s a quick visit, but an easy addition while you’re already at the cathedral.
Galleries and museums
If you’re into art or curious about local history, Como has a couple of great museum stops. First up is the Tempio Voltiano, a neoclassical structure right on the waterfront that honors Alessandro Volta, the inventor of the electric battery and a proud Como native. Day 2
Breakfast – The Brothers Cafe
We have two options for today: either take the ferry across the lake to see a historic villa or join a bicycle tour through vineyards! Both are great options, but they depend on your level of fitness or overall vacation vibe.
Regardless of which you choose, start with breakfast at The Brothers Café. This is just a 6-minute walk from the Como Ferry terminal and an 11-minute walk from the bike tour meeting point. It opens at 7:30 am, which gives you plenty of time to enjoy a cappuccino and flaky croissants. It’s quick, convenient, and a great way to fuel up before a day on the lake.
Morning Option 1 – Visit Villa del Balbianello in Lenno
No trip to Lake Como is complete without seeing Villa del Balbianello. It’s one of the most iconic spots on the lake, and for good reason. Perched on a wooded peninsula in Lenno, this villa has starred in Star Wars and Casino Royale, but nothing beats seeing it in real life. Between the dramatic lake views and manicured gardens, it’s a total showstopper.
The most scenic way to get there is by ferry from the Como terminal to Lenno, which takes about 50 minutes to an hour. From there, it’s a 20-minute walk to the villa—part of the adventure, with plenty of lake views along the way. If you’re short on time, you can also take the C10 bus (about 45 minutes) or drive yourself in 30 minutes if you’ve got a rental car.
To see the inside of the villa, you’ll need to join a 45-minute guided tour, but you’re free to explore the gardens at your own pace afterward. We easily spent over an hour just wandering through the grounds. Entrance is €13, and the villa is closed on Mondays and Wednesdays, so make sure to plan around that or swap your days if needed.
Lunch – Bistrò Il Golfo
After exploring Villa del Balbianello, make your way to Bistrò Il Golfo for lunch. It’s about a 27-minute walk from the villa and just a 4-minute stroll from the Lenno ferry terminal, which makes it perfectly placed for your next move.
This laid-back lakeside spot is great for a relaxing meal with a view. We grabbed a table outside and took our time with lunch, watching boats drift by while enjoying dishes like fresh pasta, pizza, grilled fish, and crisp local wine. I’d recommend splitting something to keep lunch light, we have a cooking class in a few hours!
After lunch, hop on the ferry and head back to Como!
Morning Option 2 – Ride an e-bike around Lake Como and Swiss vineyards
If you’re looking for a more active way to spend your morning, riding through Lake Como’s countryside is the way to do it! This small-group e-bike tour took us through charming villages, rolling hills, and across the Swiss border, all while enjoying the fresh air and stunning views. Plus, e-bikes make pedaling those hills effortless and doable for any traveler!
We met our guides, Max, Christina, and Lorenzo, who were incredibly friendly and made sure we felt comfortable before setting off. Whether you bring your own bike or rent one, the 16-mile (25-kilometer) route is well-paced and manageable for most riders.
Our 3-hour ride started at 10 am near Villa Olmo, where we pedaled along a lakeside path before reaching Cernobbio, a quaint village perfect for a photo stop. From there, we rode through Moltrasio. Admiring Cam Waterfall and its natural pool felt like a secret escape!
As we crossed into Switzerland and took in spectacular mountain views, the scenery shifted from lakeside roads to lush Merlot vineyards. It was amazing how seamlessly we moved between two countries!
On the way back, we passed Il Giardino della Valle, a hidden botanical oasis, and rode through Cernobbio’s historic streets, soaking in the last bit of lakeside charm before returning to Como.
The best part? Thanks to the e-bike, we covered a full day’s worth of exploring in just a few hours. This ride was the perfect mix of adventure, scenery, and local charm, making it an unforgettable way to experience the beauty of Lake Como in a whole new way!

Afternoon – Relax in Como
Plan on getting back to Como around 1 to 2 pm if you visited Villa del Balbianello or took the bike tour. This will give you a few hours to go back to your hotel to relax or check out any sights you missed yesterday. Next up, we have a cooking class! There are multiple start times available, but we recommend booking the 5 pm class to give yourself enough time in the afternoon.
Evening – Learn how to cook pasta and tiramisu
Rolling out fresh pasta by hand and layering creamy tiramisu in an authentic Italian home was an unforgettable way to end the day. This small-group cooking class felt more like a gathering with friends than a lesson, and by the end, we had full bellies and new skills to take home.
Our Cesarine hosts, Carolina and Simona, greeted us with Prosecco and light bites. Their warmth and enthusiasm instantly made us feel like part of the family. We spent three hours chatting and cooking, while they shared stories about Lombardy’s food traditions, making the experience feel even more authentic.
Making fresh pasta from scratch was when the real fun began! With flour-dusted hands, we kneaded, rolled, and shaped the dough under their patient guidance, with lots of laughter along the way. They broke down each step, making it easy even for beginners. The highlight? Carolina’s homemade sauce took our pasta to the next level!
Next, we made tiramisu, carefully layering espresso-soaked biscuits with rich mascarpone cream. Simona even gave us tips on where to find the best ingredients in Como so we could recreate the dish at home. Finally, we sat down to enjoy our meal with local wine and espresso, savoring every bite.

We loved the cozy vibe, which was perfect after a long day of exploring. The bartenders were clearly experts in their craft; they even went off menu to make something specific for my taste buds!

Day 3
Breakfast – Babi Como
Start your final day in Lake Como with breakfast at Babi Como, a cozy little spot just an 8-minute walk from the tour departure point. It opens at 8:00 am, which gives you plenty of time to enjoy a relaxed morning before heading out.
We stopped in for cappuccinos and pastries and loved the calm, welcoming vibe—simple, fresh, and just what we needed to fuel up for the day ahead. Just a quick heads-up: they’re closed on Wednesdays, so if your third day falls midweek, you’ll want to swap in another café nearby.
Explore the charming towns of Bellagio and Varenna on a full-day tour
Spend your final day soaking in the magic of Lake Como with this small-group ferry-hopping tour that hits two of the lake’s most charming towns—Varenna and Bellagio. This tour departs at 11:30 am and wraps up around 7:30 pm, making it a full day of exploring, eating, and cruising across the lake without the stress of planning it all yourself.
We met our guide, Michael, in Como and hopped on the ferry to Varenna, passing elegant villas and forested hills along the way. The ride alone was stunning, but it only got better from there. In Varenna, Michael led us through quiet streets and along the lakefront promenade, sharing stories that made the town’s history come alive.
St. George’s Church was a highlight, a medieval beauty filled with frescoes, and the views of the mountains reflecting in the water were unreal. It was one of those moments that made us stop and just take it all in.
Next, a short ferry ride brought us to Bellagio, where we enjoyed fresh lake fish and homemade pasta at one of Michael’s go-to local spots (at our own expense). It was off the beaten path, cozy, and absolutely delicious. After lunch, we wandered through Bellagio’s famous staircases and flower-filled alleys, stopping to peek into hidden courtyards and boutique shops.
By the time we headed back to Como, it felt like we had truly experienced the lake, not just the sights, but the culture, the food, and the rhythm of these lakeside towns. If you only do one guided tour on Lake Como, make it this one!

Dinner – Osteria del Gallo
After a full day exploring Varenna and Bellagio, end the evening with a relaxed meal at Osteria del Gallo. It’s just a 5-minute walk from the tour’s endpoint, so it’s an easy and welcome stop after a long day on the lake.
This cozy osteria feels like a local secret, with rustic charm, friendly service, and a menu full of hearty, traditional dishes. We went for the pasta and their signature cheese focaccia with cured meats, and everything was flavorful and comforting. Exactly what we were craving!
It’s the kind of place where you can settle in, chat over a glass of red, and let the pace of the day slow down. A warm, unfussy meal in the heart of Como was the perfect way to close out our final night!

If you’re looking for a luxury hotel, Palazzo Mazzini is a fantastic option! This hotel is located in central Como and offers condo-style rooms with private entrances. It’s a modern hotel in a renovated building, so it’s a good mix of historic charm and modern luxuries. Rooms range from standard hotel rooms to suites and even a penthouse apartment.

Mid-range – $$
Hotel Borgo Antico is a charming hotel located just a 10-minute walk from the city center and the lakefront. The rooms are very homey in decor and spacious. They offer double, twin, or triple rooms with breakfast included! Prices for a one-night stay start around €230 per night.

Budget – $
For budget travelers, Gira Guest House will provide a comfortable stay! It’s located just a short walk from the lake and is also close to the train station. I love the classic Italian charm of this guesthouse, it really makes for a unique stay! You can book a double or triple room and choose whether you want a shared bathroom or a private one.

Renting a Car in Italy
Renting a car in Italy is one of the best ways to explore the country beyond the cities—think charming Tuscan villages, dramatic Amalfi Coast drives, and hidden gems in the countryside. Tips for Renting a Car in Italy
- Drive on the right: Italians drive on the right-hand side of the road and overtake on the left. Right turns on red are illegal, and you must often yield to vehicles coming from the right at intersections.
- Stay alert and confident: Italian driving can feel aggressive in cities—expect assertive drivers, scooters weaving through traffic, and liberal horn use (often just a form of communication). Stay calm and practice defensive driving.
- Insurance is a must: We highly recommend adding full coverage insurance when booking. Minor damage like scratches and dents is common, especially in cities, and Discover Cars’ full protection gives you peace of mind at a low cost!
