Each town around the lake has its own unique personality, from the bustling energy of Panajachel to the laid-back, backpacker vibe of San Pedro La Laguna and the peaceful, wellness-focused atmosphere of San Marcos La Laguna. One of the best parts about visiting Lake Atitlán is how easy it is to explore—boats called lanchas connect the towns throughout the day, allowing you to move freely no matter where you’re staying.
For this itinerary, you’ll experience the best of the lake by splitting your time between Panajachel and San Pedro La Laguna, giving you a well-rounded mix of accessibility, culture, and adventure. Lanchas generally begin running around 6 am, with the final boats departing between 7 and 7:30 pm, so it’s helpful to keep transportation schedules in mind as you plan your days.

This morning, you have a couple of options. If you love exploring and soaking up the local vibe as we do, below you’ll find some great places in Panchel that you can visit on foot. Alternatively, if you think seeing some sacred Mayan caves or taking a cooking class sounds like fun, scroll a little farther down to check those out!
Here are some of Panjachel’s highlights:
- Calle Santander – This vibrant stretch of streets forms Panajachel’s main market area, lined with stalls selling colorful Mayan textiles, handmade crafts, souvenirs, and plenty of local snacks. It’s the perfect place to browse, people-watch, and get a feel for the town’s energy.
- Walk along the waterfront – Panajachel’s waterfront is always buzzing with activity, from boats coming and going to vendors and lakeside shops. Take a leisurely stroll and enjoy views of the lake framed by surrounding volcanoes.
- Grab coffee at Flor de café – Stop by this laid-back lakeside espresso bar for a quality cup of coffee with beautiful views of Lake Atitlán—a great spot to relax and recharge.

We loved how this Mayan ceremony gave us a meaningful introduction to the spiritual traditions of the Mayan people in a truly special setting. You’ll confirm your start time with the tour provider ahead of time, but we recommend scheduling the ceremony no later than 11 am so you’ll have plenty of time for the 2 pm kayaking tour.
Departing directly from Panajachel’s ferry dock, you’ll travel across Lake Atitlán to sacred caves where a local Mayan shaman leads a traditional ceremony rooted in centuries-old rituals.
