In this post, we’ll share our ideal 3-day Boulder itinerary, which will show you the best of both the local culture and the spectacular Flatirons mountains. Itinerary Overview
Boulder is one of Colorado’s best destinations for anyone who loves the outdoors – and that’s definitely us! It’s framed by the iconic Flatirons, so you best believe it’s beautiful. And with tons of bike paths and hiking trails to follow, it’s also easy to explore.
This three-day itinerary ensures you’ll experience the very best of Boulder, from hiking beneath the Flatirons and visiting the famous Celestial Seasonings Tea Factory to spending a full day discovering Rocky Mountain National Park. And along the way, there’s plenty of time to experience Pearl Street and sample Boulder’s excellent food scene, so bring your appetite as well as your sense of adventure!
Downtown Boulder and Pearl Street are easy to explore on foot, and then we used the COOP Rideshare app to reach Chautauqua Park, Celestial Seasonings, and Flagstaff House. This is a driver-owned app with no surge pricing, so it’s a win for locals and visitors alike. Then, both guided tours in this itinerary include transportation where needed, so you won’t need to worry about driving.
Finally, be sure to book your tours, tea factory visit, and Flagstaff House reservation in advance. And since Boulder sits at 5,430 feet (1,655 meters) above sea level, remember to take it easy on your first day here and drink plenty of water!
Day 1: Explore Boulder’s biggest landmarks on a guided e-bike tour before wandering Pearl Street, visiting the Museum of Boulder, and ending the day with hearty European food and craft cocktails.
Day 2: Take a full-day guided tour of Rocky Mountain National Park to see alpine lakes, mountain wildlife, and spectacular high-altitude scenery before enjoying a relaxed evening back in Boulder.
Day 3: Hike beneath the iconic Flatirons, tour the famous Celestial Seasonings Tea Factory, and celebrate your final evening with an unforgettable dinner overlooking Boulder at Flagstaff House.
Day 1
Breakfast – Foolish Craig’s Cafe
Boulder is an incredibly active city, so you’re going to want a proper breakfast rather than just a quick snack this morning. So, despite the name, Foolish Craig’s Café is actually a very smart choice!
It’s a popular spot on Pearl Street that’s known for its homemade breads and creative crepes, as well as its hearty breakfast dishes. We recommend the Foolish Craig crepe, which is packed with bacon, potatoes, salsa, and more! Or, for something sweet, the French toast with pear and apple marmalade sounds really good.
The café opens at 8 am, and we got here at about 8:30 am, which gave us plenty of time to eat without feeling rushed. From here, it was around a 20-minute walk or a quick rideshare to the e-bike shop, where we arrived just before 10:15 am for check-in and our bike fitting.
Morning – See Boulder’s epic scenery and landmarks by e-bike
Boulder is known for its cycling culture, so this e-bike tour is one of the best ways to get your bearings while seeing a huge amount of the city! We were so excited for this tour, and it didn’t disappoint.
After a quick safety briefing and practice session, we set off with our guide to explore around 15 miles of Boulder’s streets, parks, and bike paths. The electric motor made the hills much easier, so we could actually enjoy the scenery rather than spend the entire ride trying to catch our breath! It’s also a bit of a godsend if you’re still adjusting to the altitude.
We passed the red sandstone formations at Settler’s Park before riding toward the Flatirons, which looked incredible from every angle. Chautauqua Park was one of our favorite stops, thanks to its beautiful mountain views and fascinating history.
From there, we continued through the University of Colorado campus, passed Folsom Field and the National Center for Atmospheric Research, and followed the peaceful Boulder Creek Path back toward downtown. Our guide shared lots of interesting stories about Boulder’s history, outdoor culture, and local landmarks along the way, so it was a great introduction to the city.
The tour includes your e-bike, helmet, and guide. You must be at least 18 and comfortable riding a standard bicycle. Closed-toe shoes are required, and it’s worth checking the height and weight limits before booking.
Lunch – Avanti
After a busy morning on the bikes, Avanti is the perfect place to refuel. It’s a modern food hall that brings together several independent kitchens under one roof, so everyone can order exactly what they’re in the mood for without having to compromise!
Whether you’re craving Venezuelan arepas or New York-style pizza, you’ll find plenty of choice here. We grabbed our food and headed straight up to the rooftop terrace, where we were treated to lovely views across downtown Boulder and the Flatirons in the distance.
Avanti is just a 20-minute walk or a short rideshare from the bike shop and opens daily from 11 am. Reservations usually aren’t needed, so it’s a super casual stop before spending the afternoon exploring Pearl Street.
Afternoon – Wander Pearl Street and learn about Boulder’s past
After lunch, spend a few hours exploring Pearl Street Mall, the lively heart of downtown Boulder. This pedestrianized stretch is lined with historic brick buildings which house tons of cute independent boutiques and bookstores, so it’s the perfect place to enjoy a leisurely wander after a pretty active morning. Boulder Book Store in particular is well worth a browse, while Peppercorn is packed with quirky kitchenware and gifts.
There are usually street performers and public art installations to check out around here, as well as seasonal flower displays. And when you need a caffeine fix, be sure to stop by The Laughing Goat for a coffee. We loved this cozy cafe!
At around 3:30 pm, continue west to the Museum of Boulder. Its Boulder Experience Gallery explores the city’s history, outdoor culture, and role in scientific and technological innovation. There are lots of temporary exhibitions that change throughout the year, so it’s worth checking what’s on before your visit. Adult admission is currently $12 USD, and the museum closes at 5 pm from Wednesday through Sunday.
Then, whenever you’re ready, head back to your hotel for a bit of a rest before dinner.
Dinner – Bohemian Biergarten
For dinner, head to Bohemian Biergarten, a lively Central European-style beer hall right in downtown Boulder. It’s set inside a gorgeous historic building with vaulted ceilings and those long wooden tables, so it’s a fun and atmospheric place to spend your first evening in Boulder!
The menu is also pretty authentically Central European, so it’s a nice change from Boulder’s usual New American fare. When we came here, we started with a giant pretzel and bier cheese, then shared some goulash and schnitzel. We were stuffed by the end!
As you’d expect, beer is the main focus here, and there are lots of European brews to try, but there are also cocktails and wine if beer isn’t your thing. We do recommend making a reservation here on weekends and during special events, but if you’re coming during the week, there’s no need to worry. Then, after dinner, it’s only a one-minute walk to Hotel Boulderado for a final cocktail!
Evening – Sip away the evening in Boulder’s historic cocktail lounge
End your first night at License No. 1, a moody underground cocktail lounge tucked beneath the historic Hotel Boulderado. After the buzz of Bohemian Biergarten, its intimate atmosphere makes it the perfect place to wind down before bed.
The bar takes its name from one of Boulder’s first legal liquor licenses, which was issued in 1969 after decades of strict local alcohol laws. There’s a great mix of classic cocktails and seasonal creations, so you can either stick with an old favorite or try something a little different.
License No. 1 also hosts live music and underground comedy on selected evenings, so it’s worth checking the calendar before you go. Just bear in mind that it’s currently only open from Wednesday to Saturday, so if you’re visiting earlier in the week you can either stay at Bohemian Biergarten for another drink or finish the evening with a stroll along Pearl Street.
Day 2
Breakfast – Walnut Cafe
Start day two with breakfast at Walnut Cafe, a popular local spot that’s conveniently located right beside the pickup point for your Rocky Mountain National Park tour. That means you can enjoy a relaxed breakfast and then meet your guide outside without any extra effort!
The menu is packed with hearty options, which is exactly what you’ll want before a full day in the mountains. We went for the Big Dill eggs, and they were so delicious, but there are plenty of hearty options on the menu, including the banana walnut pancakes if you’re craving something sweet.
Walnut Cafe opens at 7 am, but you don’t need to get there until around 8:15 am. Don’t leave it much later than that, because you’ll need to be outside and ready to meet your guide by 9:35 am.
Morning/Afternoon – Spend a day exploring Rocky Mountain National Park
No trip to Boulder would be complete without visiting Rocky Mountain National Park! We absolutely loved this tour because it took care of all the planning and driving, leaving us free to sit back and enjoy some of Colorado’s most spectacular scenery.
As we traveled deeper into the park, we stopped at beautiful alpine lakes and some amazing viewpoints. We were also constantly scanning the hillsides for elk, moose, and marmots, and we were lucky enough to briefly spot an eagle soaring overhead!
Then, we traveled along Trail Ridge Road, one of the highest paved roads in North America, although understandably, the conditions do have to be right for this! As we climbed above the tree line, we were treated to the most incredible panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains. And we live in the Canadian Rockies, so that’s really saying something.
One thing that we really love about this tour is that no two tours are exactly the same. Each day, the guides adapt the route based on weather conditions and wildlife sightings. For example, you may also stop in Estes Park or pass the famous Stanley Hotel. So while that does mean we can’t give you your exact itinerary, we can tell you that you’ll have the best possible day!

Finally, remember to bring a warm layer, as temperatures in the mountains can be much cooler than they are in Boulder! You’ll return to the city at around 5:45 pm with plenty of time to freshen up before dinner.

Dinner – The Sink
After a full day in the mountains, we headed to The Sink for a casual dinner, but ended up also getting a taste of Boulder history! As it turns out, this colorful University Hill institution has been serving students, locals, and visitors since 1923, and its walls are covered in murals and signatures from decades of diners.
The Sink is best known for its burgers and “Ugly Crust” pizzas. I went for the Cowboy Reuben with smoked brisket, while Bailey tucked into a Bourbon Jalapeño Burger. You can also order the P.O.T.U.S. pizza, which Barack Obama famously chose during his visit – told you this place was steeped in history!
There are plenty of vegetarian options too, and if you still have room, the giant snickerdoodle with vanilla ice cream is a very tempting way to finish! We were too full for this, but it looked so good that we almost went for it anyway.
The Sink stays open until 10 pm from Sunday to Thursday and 11 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. If you’re heading on to indoor golf afterward, aim to leave by about 8 pm, or you can always just chill here for the evening and enjoy another drink or two.
Evening – Play indoor golf at Birdie Factory
If you’ve got some energy left after dinner, keep the fun going with a round of indoor golf at Birdie Factory!
If you’re an experienced golfer, you can play a virtual course or practice your swing on the digital driving range. But if you don’t know much about golf, there are plenty of beginner-friendly games, so no worries if you’re not exactly the next Tiger Woods.
Birdie Factory is just a short drive from The Sink, and it stays open until 10 pm from Monday to Thursday. Booking a bay for about an hour should be plenty, but keep your plans flexible in case the Rocky Mountain National Park tour runs late.
Day 3
Breakfast – Alpine Modern Café
Start your final day with breakfast at Alpine Modern Café, a stylish neighborhood spot tucked between downtown Boulder and Chautauqua Park. It’s on the way out to your hike beneath the Flatirons, and the breakfast brioche is hard to beat. There’s also smoked salmon toast if you want something savory, and you can always grab a pastry to take with you for later.
Alpine Modern opens at 7 am, so aim to arrive at around 7:30 am. From here, it’s a 15 to 20-minute uphill walk to the Chautauqua Ranger Cottage. We hopped in a COOP instead of walking and saved our energy for the trail!
Morning – Hike beneath Boulder’s famous Flatirons
You can’t visit Boulder without getting a closer look at the Flatirons, and Chautauqua Park is the perfect place to start! There are a few different options here, so you can just choose one that suits your hiking ability (and mood!)
We’re avid hikers, so we decided to tackle the Royal Arch Trail. This 3.4-mile (5.5 km) round trip climbs steeply through the foothills to a huge natural sandstone arch, with incredible views across Boulder and the plains beyond. With about 1,400 feet (426 meters) of elevation gain, it’s definitely not an easy stroll, and it took us about three hours, but you might want to allow a little longer if you’re still adjusting to the altitude.
If you prefer something gentler, the Enchanted Mesa Trail winds gradually through pine forest and still delivers beautiful views beneath the Flatirons. It’s much easier to adapt to your energy levels, as you can turn around early or connect with nearby trails.
Whichever route you choose, stop by the Ranger Cottage or check the latest trail conditions before setting off. Wear proper hiking shoes and bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a light waterproof layer. In summer, starting early also helps you avoid the worst of the heat and the afternoon thunderstorms, especially if you’re planning to tackle the Royal Arch trail!
Lunch – Chautauqua Dining Hall
After your hike, reward yourself with lunch at the historic Chautauqua Dining Hall, just a few minutes from the trailhead. Dating back to 1898, this beautiful spot forms part of the Colorado Chautauqua National Historic Landmark, so it’s a fitting place to round off a morning in the Flatirons!
The weather was good when we visited, so we asked for a table on the wraparound porch and enjoyed the views of the park as we ate. We were hungry after hiking, so we both went for the Alpine bison burger, but there’s a yummy-sounding beet-cured salmon salad if you’re after something a bit healthier.
Lunch is served as part of the brunch menu until 3 pm, but reservations are a good idea on weekends and during the summer concert season. Try to finish up at around 1 pm, ready for a 20-minute ride over to Celestial Seasonings. It’s tea time!
Afternoon – Sample Boulder’s famous tea and beer
See how Boulder’s teas are made
After an active morning, slow the pace with a visit to the famous Celestial Seasonings Tea Factory. To be honest, we’re not huge tea drinkers, but this was actually a really fun and unique experience, so we’re really glad we did it.
The guided factory tour takes around 45 minutes and gives you a behind-the-scenes look at how the company’s best-loved teas are blended and packaged. One of the biggest highlights is stepping inside the famous Mint Room, where the scent of peppermint and spearmint is so strong it almost takes your breath away!
Before or after your tour, make sure to stop by the Tea Bar, where you can sample more than 80 different teas completely free of charge. We also enjoyed browsing the gift shops, where we found quirky tea-related souvenirs and flavors we’d never even heard of before.
Tours currently cost around $6 USD and run from Tuesday to Saturday, but they do sell out, so it’s worth booking your tickets in advance. We recommend reserving the 2 pm tour and arriving by 1:45 pm to check in. This will leave enough time for a quick beer stop before getting freshened up for dinner!
Avery Brewing
A trip to Boulder wouldn’t be complete without at least one brewery stop – it is Colorado after all! Boulder is home to the iconic Avery Brewing, one of the big names in the craft brewing scene. And it just so happens to be a 3-minute drive from Celestial Seasonings. So after getting your tea fix, switch to something a bit stronger.
I was blown away by the size of Avery Brewing. It has quite the imposing exterior, but once we stepped inside, we were welcomed by the familiar, cozy pub feel. If you catch a nice sunny day, the patio area is lively too! Avery has over 30 brews on tap, so we had to get a flight to try a few. Some of the standouts included their flagship White Rascal, a belgian-white, and their Avery IPA, which was smooth and drinkable. They had some interesting seasonal beers too, like the Ginger Sour!
This is a can’t-miss stop for beer lovers and a classic Colorado activity to wind down your Boulder trip.
Dinner/Evening – Flagstaff House
If you ask us, there’s no better way to end three days in Boulder than with dinner at Flagstaff House. It’s an award-winning restaurant perched high above the city, so dining here gives you breathtaking views of Boulder and the surrounding plains.
The restaurant serves a seasonal tasting menu, with guests choosing one dish from each course. The menu changes regularly to showcase the freshest ingredients, but you might find dishes such as Colorado lamb, duck breast, Alaskan halibut, or beautifully prepared vegetarian creations. There’s also an optional wine pairing, which is a little pricey, but worth it if you’re celebrating a special occasion (or just really appreciate a nice glass of wine!)
We recommend booking your table around sunset, when the views are at their very best. Dinner here is an experience rather than a quick meal, so allow around three hours. Trust us, you’ll really want to relax and enjoy each course!
As you might be able to guess, reservations are essential here. We strongly suggest booking as early as possible to avoid disappointment, especially if you’re hoping for a window or terrace table. Then, once you’ve finished, call a rideshare back to your hotel rather than attempting to walk down Flagstaff Road.

We didn’t pick Hotel Boulderado just for its pun-tastic name, but we can’t lie, it didn’t hurt! This is one of Boulder’s most iconic hotels, and it perfectly combines historic charm with modern comforts. Our room was super stylish and comfortable, and License No. 1, the atmospheric cocktail bar featured in this itinerary, is tucked away beneath the hotel, so we could just head straight to bed right after we grabbed a drink there!
Staying here also made following this itinerary so easy, because it’s located right in the heart of downtown. We were able to walk to Pearl Street and several restaurants, so we really couldn’t have asked for more.

Budget – $
Hilton Garden Inn Boulder is our top budget pick in town, because it offers great value without sacrificing comfort. Its cheaper price tag is due to the fact that it’s located just outside of the downtown core, but it’s not so far out that you’ll feel isolated or waste a lot of time traveling in and out! It’s still within walking distance of Pearl Street, and it has everything you need for a comfortable stay.
Facilities include spacious modern rooms, a fitness center, and a seasonal rooftop pool with lovely mountain views. We also think it’s a great base if you’re planning to spend lots of time exploring Boulder rather than relaxing at your hotel.
