Our personal FAVORITE thing we did in Bacalar was this half-day boat cruise! It took us through the Pirates’ Channel, cenotes, and even past the Island of Birds, with plenty of time for swimming, snorkeling, and relaxing onboard.
Itinerary Overview
Bacalar is small and easy to navigate, but the way you get there (and around) can make a big difference. Many people visiting go for a rental car, since rental prices in this part of Mexico are fairly reasonable, and it gives you the flexibility to explore beyond the town center, which you’ll definitely want to do for cenotes, ruins, and boat tours. If you don’t have a car, buses run from nearby airports, and you can rely on taxis once you arrive.
Within town, everything is walkable, from lakeside restaurants to the fortress and the main square. For spots a little farther out, taxis are reliable and affordable. We found Bacalar incredibly safe and relaxed, so however you decide to get around, you’ll be able to focus on soaking up the lake views and enjoying the pace of life here.
Day 1: Ease into Bacalar with breakfast in town before a lagoon cruise through cenotes and the Pirates Channel, explore the San Felipe Fortress, and finish with dinner on the water.
Day 2: Start early with a sunrise paddleboard tour, spend midday floating at Los Rápidos, then set sail on a private sunset cruise before dining at one of Bacalar’s top restaurants.
Day 3: Take a morning trip to the Chacchoben Ruins, enjoy tacos back in town, cool off at a cenote or beach club on the lagoon, and end your trip with a lively dinner and one last stroll around Bacalar.
Day 1
Breakfast – Madre Masa
Your first taste of Bacalar begins at Madre Masa, a delightful bakery and café that opens at 8 am every day except Wednesdays, when they’re closed. The moment we walked in, the smell of fresh bread and roasted coffee set the tone for the day ahead. Pastries come out warm from the oven, and if you’re in the mood for something heartier, their breakfast plates are just as satisfying.
It’s the kind of spot that makes you want to linger a little, soaking up the easygoing vibe and watching the town slowly wake up. Even better, it’s just a 4-minute drive or a 20-minute walk to the meeting point for today’s lagoon cruise, the perfect start before your first big adventure on the water.
Morning – Bacalar Lagoon cruise with the Pirates channel and cenotes
No trip to Bacalar is complete without getting out on the lagoon, and this half-day boat cruise is the perfect way to do it. Running from 10 am to 2 pm, it takes you through many of the lake’s highlights in one go (just keep in mind this cruise isn’t available on Wednesdays), so you can really appreciate why this place is called the “Lake of Seven Colors.” We couldn’t believe how much we were able to see and do in just a few hours.
The tour winds through the famous Pirates’ Channel, stops at Black Cenote and Cenote Esmeralda, and even passes by the Island of Birds. Along the way, we had plenty of chances to swim in the lagoon and cenotes, and the snorkeling equipment made it easy to dive right in.
One of the highlights was spotting the fascinating stromatolite rock formations, some of the oldest living organisms on Earth, and covering ourselves in a natural mud mask from the lagoon’s sulfur-rich clay.
We loved how relaxed the vibe was on board, with snacks, cold drinks, and music keeping the energy fun without feeling rushed. By the end of the trip, we were treated to a beautifully prepared snack platter and even had the chance to try out stand-up paddleboarding.

Late Lunch – Cocina Orizaba
After your morning on the water, make your way to Cocina Orizaba for a late lunch. It’s only a 5-minute drive or about a 22-minute walk from the dock, so it’s easy to reach once you’ve wrapped up your lagoon cruise. This little spot may not look like much from the outside, but it’s one of those hidden gems that wins you over with authentic flavors and generous portions.
We loved how homey and unpretentious it felt, the kind of place where the food speaks for itself. Expect traditional Mexican dishes cooked with care, from hearty stews to fresh tortillas, all at a very reasonable price. It’s quick, satisfying, and the perfect way to refuel before an afternoon of exploring Bacalar’s history.
Afternoon – Visit the San Felipe Fortress
By now, it’ll be around 3:30–4 pm, so why not step back in time with a visit to the San Felipe Fortress (Fuerte de San Felipe de Bacalar) before dinner? Built in the 18th century to defend the town against pirate attacks, this stone fortress now stands as one of Bacalar’s most important historic sites. From the walls, you’ll get incredible views of the lagoon’s blue-green waters, which makes the history feel even more alive.
Inside, the small museum showcases artifacts and exhibits that trace Bacalar’s past, from Mayan roots to colonial battles. Entry is around $6 USD per person, and we found it easy to spend a couple of hours here wandering the grounds, learning the stories, and soaking in the views. The fortress is open until 7 pm every day except when it’s closed on Wednesday, so you’ll have plenty of time to explore at a relaxed pace before heading to dinner.
Dinner – La Playita
After your afternoon of exploring, you might want to swing by your hotel to freshen up before dinner at La Playita. This open-air restaurant sits right on the lagoon, making it one of the most scenic spots in Bacalar to end the day.
The vibe is casual and fun, with hammocks, string lights, and a menu full of Mexican and international favorites. We definitely recommend trying the ceviche, which is fresh and packed with flavor. Order a cold drink, enjoy the lake views, and let the easygoing atmosphere set the tone for the evening. Since tomorrow starts early, it’s a nice idea to head back afterward and get some rest.
Day 2
Early morning – Sunrise paddleboard
Gliding across Lake Bacalar at sunrise is an experience you’ll never forget, and this stand-up paddleboard tour is the perfect way to do it. Tours generally run between 6 and 9 am, but the exact start varies depending on sunrise, which means you’ll catch the lagoon at its calmest.
Even if you’re new to paddleboarding, the conditions here make it easy to get the hang of it. We found it surprisingly beginner-friendly!
Over the course of three hours, you’ll explore some of Bacalar’s most stunning spots, including the Black Cenote, where you can try a natural sulfur mud mask, and the Pirates’ Canal, once used by real pirates centuries ago.
Coffee, snacks, and all equipment are included, so everything’s taken care of while you simply soak up the sunrise. Just keep in mind this tour isn’t available on Wednesdays, so make sure to plan ahead so you don’t miss out!

Breakfast – Picaflor Bacalar
After your sunrise paddleboarding tour, it’s just a quick 3-minute walk to Picaflor Bacalar, a colorful little café that’s perfect for a post-lagoon breakfast. The vibe is relaxed and cheerful, with bright décor and a menu that leans into fresh, wholesome dishes.
We loved the smoothie bowls and fresh juices here, which felt like exactly what we needed after an early morning on the water. They also serve great coffee and heartier breakfast plates if you’re craving something more filling. It’s the ideal spot to recharge before heading out for the rest of your day.
Midday – Los Rapidos
Just a 15-minute drive from Bacalar, Los Rápidos is a natural lazy river that feels like the ultimate reward after an early morning on the lagoon. Plan to arrive when they open around 10 am and stay until about 1:30 pm, plenty of time to float, swim, and soak in the scenery. The gentle current carries you along clear turquoise water, making it one of the most relaxing (and photogenic) experiences in Bacalar.
One of the unique features here is the stromatolites, ancient living rock formations that are among the oldest life forms on Earth. They’re fragile and incredibly important, so you’ll want to admire them from a respectful distance while floating nearby. We loved how it felt like drifting through both a natural wonder and a piece of Earth’s history.
There’s a small restaurant on-site where you can grab lunch, so you don’t need to rush off. Entrance is free, and lockers are available if you’d like to store your things—just remember to bring your own padlock or rent one at the desk. It’s the perfect midday pause before your evening adventure!
Evening – Relax on a private sunset cruise
After a day of paddleboarding at sunrise and floating through Los Rápidos, winding down on this private sunset cruise feels like the perfect way to round things out. Check in at 2:30 pm (just outside of town) and set sail by 3 pm for an unforgettable half-day on the water.

After sailing back into town, treat yourself to dinner at Nixtamal, one of Bacalar’s more upscale dining spots and just a 10-minute drive from the dock. The atmosphere strikes a balance between elegant and relaxed, making it an ideal follow-up to your private cruise.
The menu is creative yet rooted in Mexican tradition, with beautifully plated dishes that highlight fresh, local ingredients. We especially enjoyed how every course felt like a little celebration, from inventive starters to mains that showcased regional flavors with a refined touch.

Day 3
Morning – Visit the Chacchoben Ruins
So far, we’ve enjoyed the best that Bacalar Lagoon has to offer, so why not add a little history and culture to your Bacalar trip? In our opinion, the Chacchoben Ruins are an absolute must!
Just a 45-minute drive from town, this ancient Mayan site offers the chance to wander through jungle-shrouded temples that date back as far as 200 BC. At its height between 200 and 700 AD, Chacchoben was a bustling ceremonial center, and today you can still feel that sense of significance as you walk among its towering pyramids and plazas.
Some of the most notable structures include the Gran Basamento, a raised platform with sweeping views of the forest, and several large pyramids where rituals once took place. You’ll also see smaller temples and residential foundations that give a glimpse into everyday Mayan life.
The ruins open at 9 am, and arriving early means cooler temperatures and fewer people. Entry is just over $4 USD per person, and you’ll want to plan on spending about 1.5 to 2 hours exploring. While most travelers reach the site by rental car, it’s also possible to arrange a taxi. It’s a fascinating way to step back in time before returning to Bacalar for lunch.
Lunch – Mr. Taco
Once you’re back in Bacalar, stop by Mr. Taco for a casual and satisfying lunch. This spot is a local favorite, known for its no-frills atmosphere and consistently delicious food.
As the name suggests, tacos are the star of the show, with a variety of fillings to choose from, all fresh, flavorful, and made to order. We loved how lively and welcoming it felt, the kind of place where both locals and travelers gather for a quick, tasty meal. It’s the perfect refuel after a morning exploring the ruins.
Afternoon – Relax on Lake Bacalar
After a morning of history at Chacchoben and a hearty lunch, the afternoon is all about slowing down and soaking up the beauty of Lake Bacalar. The lagoon’s clear, multicolored waters are perfect for cooling off, and there are plenty of spots to choose from depending on the vibe you’re after.
For a classic experience, head to Cenote Azul or Cenote Cocalitos, both popular swimming holes where you can dive into refreshing turquoise water surrounded by lush greenery. If you’d prefer to stay close to town, Balneario Municipal El Aserradero is a simple, local spot with easy access to the lake.
Looking for something with a little more comfort? Spend the afternoon at Beach Club Blu or Bacalar Beach Club, where you’ll find loungers, food and drink service, and a relaxed, social atmosphere. However you choose to spend it, this is the perfect way to enjoy Bacalar at its most laid-back.
Dinner – Los de Atlixco
To wrap up your time in Bacalar, we suggest heading to Los de Atlixco, a cheerful spot right in the center of town. The lively atmosphere makes it feel like a celebration, with music, chatter, and plenty of good food filling the space.
The menu offers plenty of variety, from hearty Mexican plates to lighter bites and refreshing drinks. We loved how it felt like a true community hub, with both locals and travelers gathering around the tables. It’s casual, energetic, and the perfect place to enjoy your last dinner by the lagoon.
Evening – Explore Bacalar one more time
With all the action we’ve seen on this itinerary, there’s no better way to savor your final night in Bacalar than by taking a slow stroll through town. The streets are colorful and inviting, the pace is unhurried, and every corner has something to catch your eye, from vibrant murals to peaceful boardwalks overlooking the lagoon at sunset!
If you’re not quite ready to call it a night, stop for a drink at I Scream Bar, just next door to Los de Atlixco. We loved the playful vibe here—there’s often live music, the drinks are spot on, and the staff are known to stand on chairs and shout “I Scream bar,” which never fails to make the whole place laugh. It’s a lighthearted and memorable way to close out your Bacalar adventure.

Where to Stay in Bacalar, Mexico

La Albariña – $$$
For a luxurious stay that you’ll remember forever, head to La Albarina. This five-star hotel is one of the best hotels in Bacalar. It’s on the water, with suites that have a lagoon view from each room.
The staff speaks both English and Spanish, and the hotel has its own water sports facilities so that you can get out and enjoy the lake directly from your hotel. Other amenities include beautiful gardens, workout facilities, Wi-Fi, a restaurant, a bar, and a complimentary breakfast. Prices for a suite are around $400 USD a night, although I’ve found even better deals on Booking.com.
Blue Palm Bacalar – $$
A four-star hotel for $168 USD per night? Only in Mexico! This beautiful property at Blue Palm Bacalar features a restaurant, a huge swimming pool, a bar, and extensive gardens. It’s walking distance from the lagoon, and a stay here includes a delicious breakfast and great Wi-Fi, which is helpful for the digital nomads among us.
A King Suite with a balcony is only $168 USD – even in the busy season! You can grab a room on Booking.com before they all disappear!
Che Bacalar Hostel & Bar – $
We stayed at Che Bacalar Hostel & Bar and while it’s a budget-friendly option, it had absolutely everything we needed. The location is perfect as it’s only a 5-minute walk from the lagoon! There’s free Wi-Fi, lots of space to relax and mingle and the on-site bar and pool were a lot of fun. I can’t forget the view of the lake from the rooftop – stunning!
They organize regular free activities like karaoke, themed parties, and Meet&Eat Nights so you can hang with fellow travelers. This is an adults-only property with bunks at $20 USD and up, and really nice private rooms around the $150 USD mark in peak season. You can easily book here on Booking.com.
Renting a Car in Mexico
Undoubtedly, one of the best ways to get around Mexico is in a rental car.
I struggled to get around by bus and taxi for the longest time. But after renting a car in Cancun in 2023, I never looked back. It allowed me to explore the country without worrying about tours or taxis. It was why I fell in love with Mexico and eventually decided to live here periodically.
I refuse to use local services whenever I rent a car in Mexico. The truth is they sometimes can’t be trusted or come with hidden fees (or costly insurance that doesn’t make sense.) There are even rental car scams! So instead, I use Discover Cars, the company most experienced travelers or ex-pats in Mexico recommend. Read my honest review of Discover Cars here for more details!
The rates on Discover Cars are cheap, too, with the average rental costing around $25 USD per day. Full coverage insurance can be added for an extra $10 USD a day too.
Driving in Mexico also only requires a driver’s license using the Roman alphabet. If yours uses another like Japan and China, you simply need an international driving permit.
Insurance is required, but if you book with Discover Cars and get the full coverage, that’s all you need! Oh, and being over 18 is required, and if you’re over 25, your rental will be much cheaper!

If you’re looking to save money on travel insurance, we currently use and recommend SafetyWing. We’ve been using their coverage since 2018 and they’ve had our backs when we needed emergency flights and got sick overseas.
