Reserve well in advance: Lake Tahoe is very popular year-round. The summers are crowded with people wanting to enjoy the beautiful weather on the lake and the cooler temperatures compared to lower elevations. To make your trip as smooth as possible, it’s best to reserve activities, hotels, and tours in advance! 

Start early: Whether you’re hiking, heading to the beach, or taking a scenic drive, mornings are the best time to explore Lake Tahoe. You’ll avoid the busiest crowds, have an easier time finding parking, and enjoy calmer conditions on the lake.

Rent a car: If you really want to experience all parts of Lake Tahoe, it’s best to rent a car. While there’s plenty of walkable places in between hotels, we’ve always found that renting a car gives us the most freedom to explore around the lake. 

How I would spend 3 days in Lake Tahoe

After several trips to the north and south shores of Lake Tahoe, we’ve built the perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and stunning scenery, based entirely on firsthand experience. From hiking to hidden castles and sailing the lake to kayaking over crystal-clear water and snapping epic sunset photos, this itinerary is packed with unforgettable moments.

Day 1: Experience Lake Tahoe’s natural beauty and head to Emerald Bay to hike the Vikingsholm Castle Trail. After a delicious lunch, you’ll get out on the lake for our favorite experience, a 2-hour sailing cruise! And then later in the evening, hike to one of the best viewpoints in the area for sunset. 

Day 2: Spend the morning in North Lake Tahoe and take a self-guided bike tour of Tahoe’s East Trail for some incredible scenery. Keep the adventure going and kayak around Sand Harbor. After a long, active day, replenish with some delicious Italian carbohydrates at Lanza’s Restaurant. 

Day 3: Have an epic morning on this helicopter tour overlooking Emerald Bay. In the afternoon, you can either go hiking or visit the casinos, and then finish up your time by hitting the town for a cocktail or two!

Things to do in Lake Tahoe

1. Explore Tahoe’s east shore on an e-bike

Group tours always sound good on paper—until you’re stuck racing ahead or lagging behind, missing the best stops. That’s why this self-guided e-bike tour along Lake Tahoe’s East Shore Trail is such a win. You’ll have the freedom to ride at your own pace, stop wherever you want, and soak in the scenery without constantly checking the time.

You’ll kick things off at a convenient Incline Village rental shop, where the friendly crew gives clear, patient instructions, even for someone like me who needs a quick e-bike refresher. The bikes are solid, the route is scenic, and you have the choice of a three- or four-hour ride depending on how relaxed you want to be.

Riding the East Shore Trail feels like cruising through a postcard—smooth paths, no traffic stress, and wide-open views that keep getting better. You’ll want to take your time exploring little coves, snapping photos, and stopping to swim on your way to Sand Harbor. 

One of the most unexpected highlights I always love is gliding past “Billionaire’s Row,” where sprawling lakefront mansions line the water like something out of a magazine. Pedaling past jaw-dropping estates with private docks and backyard beaches makes the whole ride feel like stumbling into a lakeside dream.

Renting these bikes is hands down one of the best ways to experience Tahoe—every mile feels like its own little adventure. The freedom to explore hidden spots, skip the crowds, and move at our own rhythm turns a scenic ride into something completely unforgettable.

2. Get the best views on Lake Tahoe’s Emerald Bay scenic cruise

South Lake Tahoe traffic can be a headache, especially on weekends when parking fills up fast. That’s why this Emerald Bay paddlewheeler cruise is so convenient! It includes a complimentary hotel shuttle, so you don’t have to fight the crowds to get to the meeting point. Aside from that, you will absolutely love every minute of this laid-back, story-filled ride aboard the M.S. Dixie II.

This two-hour cruise takes you from Zephyr Cove across the lake to the iconic Emerald Bay, all aboard a traditional side-wheeler. There’s indoor seating with climate control, but you’ll want to spend most of the ride out on the deck, snapping photos of the snow-capped peaks and the lake’s unbelievably clear water. 

Sometimes, the sun hits the surface just right, and the lake turns into an incredible turquoise so vivid it doesn’t look real. You will pass towering pine-covered slopes, hidden beaches, and that deep blue-to-clear gradient you only get in Tahoe.

Food and drinks are available to purchase, so you can grab lunch and a drink. The combo of good food, lake breeze, and relaxing music makes the whole thing feel like a mini vacation within a vacation.

The narrated portion is surprisingly engaging, with stories about how the bay was carved by glaciers, legends of Fannette Island, and background on Vikingsholm Castle. It’s fun, relaxing, and just the right amount of education.

3. Ride the Heavenly Gondola for epic Lake Tahoe views

A heavenly gondola? It sounds as gorgeous as it is! This scenic 2.4-mile (3.9-km) gondola ride at Heavenly Mountain Resort is one of the best ways to experience Lake Tahoe’s incredible scenery, offering panoramic views of the lake and surrounding Sierra Nevada Mountains with almost no effort.

The ride is smooth and accessible for just about everyone, departing right from the heart of Heavenly Village. You can reserve tickets online, and if you want to make a day of it, combo tickets are available that include lunch or activities like the mountain coaster, zip line, or summer tubing.

Along the way, stop at the Observation Deck for snacks and photos before continuing to the summit, where there’s plenty to do beyond admiring the views. Grab a bite at Tamarack Lodge, enjoy a drink at Bar 9150′, or spend the afternoon trying one of the mountain’s adventure activities. It’s easy to spend a few relaxing hours here before riding the gondola back down.

During winter, Heavenly Resort transforms into a snowy wonderland, with the gondola serving as the gateway to world-class skiing, snowboarding, and tubing. Whether you’re hitting the slopes or simply soaking up the snowy mountain scenery, it’s a magical experience year-round.

4. Go sailing on Lake Tahoe

There’s no shortage of boat tours in Lake Tahoe, but many cram 50+ people on board and blast around with loud engines, making it hard to actually relax. That’s why this small-group sailing cruise was hands-down our favorite tour of the trip. It was calm, quiet, and just the kind of laid-back adventure we came to Tahoe for.

We hopped aboard “Blue,” a sleek 40-foot (12-meter) sailboat that caps the guest list at just 18 people in South Lake Tahoe. The second we left the dock, we knew we were in for something special. No engine noise, no diesel fumes—just the sound of the wind catching the sails and the occasional splash against the hull. 

The route changes based on the wind, so no two cruises are the same, but the views are always incredible. Watching the sails fill and catching glimpses of snow-dusted peaks in the distance made it feel like Tahoe was showing off just for us.

Add in complimentary beverages and a genuinely welcoming crew, and this felt less like a tour and more like being out on the water with friends. We could’ve stayed out there all day.

We weren’t sure what to expect from a snowshoe tour. Honestly, it sounded like it might be tough, but this small-group adventure turned out to be way more fun (and far more accessible) than we imagined. You don’t need experience, special skills, or even gear. They provide everything you need, including lessons, poles, and super comfy snowshoes that make trekking through powder way easier than it looks.

What really made this tour stand out was the access to trails we never could’ve found on our own. Our guide, Chris, took us to secluded high-country routes with some of the most jaw-dropping lake views we saw on the whole trip. 

We wandered through snow-covered pines, crunched across untouched trails, and paused often for photos—and just to soak in the peaceful quiet of the forest. At times, it felt like we had the entire wilderness to ourselves, with only the sound of our footsteps and the occasional breeze through the trees.

Chris was fantastic—part guide, part storyteller. He made everything feel easy and laid-back, throwing in a bit of local history and fun facts as we hiked. It felt more like exploring with a friend than a formal tour.

If you want to see Lake Tahoe from a totally new perspective, this private helicopter tour is hard to top. Instead of sitting in traffic or searching for parking at busy viewpoints, you’ll soar above South Lake Tahoe and watch the landscape unfold beneath you. Within minutes, you’ll understand why this is one of the most beautiful lakes in the country.

As you fly over the area, you’ll get postcard-worthy views of Emerald Bay, one of Tahoe’s most famous landmarks. 7. Explore the entire lake with a locally guided van tour

We rented a car to explore Lake Tahoe on our first trip, but without local insight or context, most of it just blurred together. This small-group tour changed everything! It tied the whole lake together with stories, history, and photo stops we never would’ve discovered on our own.

Our guide, Chris, was everything you’d want—born and raised in Tahoe, a pro photographer, and just genuinely fun to spend the day with. The six-hour loop around the lake hit a mix of iconic viewpoints, historic landmarks, and places with deep local legend collectively known as the “Seven Sacred Sights of Tahoe”.

The van was super comfy, and Chris thought of everything: cold drinks, snacks, easy bathroom stops, and even dropped us off right at the viewpoints so we didn’t have to trek from the parking lot.

We also stopped for lunch at Tahoe House (at our own expense), a cozy local favorite with the best sandwiches and pastries! It was the perfect reset before hitting the road again.

What really stood out was the storytelling. Between Chris’s commentary and a narrated CD created by his brother, complete with original songs about Tahoe’s history, we dove deep into the 1960 Olympics, Mark Twain’s adventures, the filming of The Godfather II, and legends behind Cave Rock and Thunderbird Lodge.

This tour covers the “Seven Sacred Sights” and then some. From Emerald Bay to Sand Harbor, this was easily one of the most fun, relaxed, and scenic ways to experience the lake!

8. Take a Razor Tour through Carson Valley and Pine Nut Mountain Range

If you’ve ever wanted to try off-roading without getting into anything too extreme, this private Razor Tour is a great place to start. You’ll hop into a side-by-side and head out into the wide-open Nevada desert. The ride is exciting enough to get your heart pumping, but it’s also beginner-friendly, so you don’t need to be an expert in all-terrain to have a great time.

As you make your way through Carson Valley and into the Pine Nut Mountains, you’ll climb gentle trails that open up to incredible views. It’s the kind of landscape that makes you want to stop every few minutes just to take another photo. You’ll see rolling desert hills, rugged mountain peaks, and plenty of wide-open space that feels far away from the crowds around Lake Tahoe.

Kayaking tours are common in many places around the world, but gliding across Lake Tahoe in a clear kayak is a truly unique experience. This small-group kayaking tour along the East Shore gives you a front-row seat to some of the lake’s most iconic scenery, from granite boulders to hidden coves, both above and below the waterline.

After meeting at the shop in Incline Village, you’ll get geared up and take a short shuttle to Sand Harbor. From there, your guide will lead the way. 

The expert guides know the area inside and out; they’ll point out spots like Bonsai Rock and encourage jumping from the giant shoreline boulders (if you dare!). Leaping into Tahoe’s icy blue water is equal parts refreshing and exhilarating. Tahoe’s chilly water definitely wakes you up!

The kayaks themselves are crystal-clear, so you can see the massive boulders and fish beneath you like you’re floating over an aquarium. Being able to look straight down into the lake as you paddle makes the whole experience feel like part kayaking, part snorkeling—without ever getting wet.

10. Capture a beautiful sunset on a short and scenic hike

Lake Tahoe has plenty to keep you busy and entertained throughout your stay, but experiencing the Old West in real life is the kind of adventure I’ll always chase. Located about an hour from Lake Tahoe, Virginia City feels like stepping back in time to Nevada’s Wild West days. Once a booming silver mining town during the famous Comstock Lode, its wooden boardwalks, historic saloons, and old brick buildings along the main street still capture the charm of the 1800s.

As you explore town, you’ll find everything from handmade gifts and western souvenirs to old-fashioned candy shops. One of my favorite stops is Barrels O’ Candy for their huge selection of saltwater taffy! For a deeper look into Virginia City’s history, you can tour old mines, visit museums, or hop aboard the historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad for a scenic ride through the surrounding landscape.

With its fascinating history and slower pace, Virginia City makes a great contrast to the outdoor adventures of Lake Tahoe. It’s an easy and unique day trip that’s well worth adding to your itinerary.

12. Relax on a private yacht-class boat on Lake Tahoe

There are plenty of boat tours to choose from in Lake Tahoe, but this private yacht charter is hard to beat. Instead of following a packed tour route, you’ll head out with your own group for a relaxed day on the water. You’ll enjoy open views, fresh mountain air, and the freedom to explore some of the lake’s most beautiful spots.

Along the way, you’ll cruise past the stunning lakefront estates of Rubicon Bay and admire the dramatic cliffs surrounding D.L. Bliss State Park. Then you’ll circle Emerald Bay to see Vikingsholm Castle, Eagle Falls, and the tiny stone tea house perched on Fannette Island. 13. Get your adrenaline pumping and go whitewater rafting

We’d never gone whitewater rafting before, so we weren’t quite sure what to expect, but this rafting adventure down the Truckee River ended up being one of the most memorable parts of our trip. It’s perfect for beginners or anyone who wants a splash of adrenaline without diving into anything too extreme.

Our guide, Adam, was incredible. He knew every bend and boulder like the back of his hand, gave clear instructions, and made sure we felt confident (and had fun!) through every rapid. 

The early parts of the river were mellow and scenic, winding past pines and through quiet pools where we could hop out and swim. The water was brisk—definitely chilly, but in the best way possible. It felt amazing to cool off under the Sierra sun before the rapids kicked in.

As we moved into the Floriston Gorge, the pace picked up with thrilling rapids that had us all grinning from ear to ear. We hit one wave so hard it soaked us front to back, and we loved every second of it.

What made it even better was the scenery—lush forest, rocky outcrops, and big Sierra skies the whole way. Add in Adam’s pro-level knowledge and chill attitude, and this felt more like an awesome group adventure than a guided tour.

Spots for this rafting trip go fast, especially on warm days, so grab your crew and book it early. You don’t want to miss this one!

14. Relax at Lake Tahoe’s most beautiful beaches

No trip to Lake Tahoe is complete without spending some time at the beach. The lake’s crystal-clear water and mountain backdrop make it one of the most beautiful places to relax, swim, and enjoy the views (even with the iciest temperature)!

Sand Harbor is easily Tahoe’s most famous beach, and for good reason. It has soft sand, giant granite boulders, and unbelievably clear water that makes it perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, and getting photos. Arrive early in the summer because parking fills up fast.

Pope Beach is a great choice if you’re traveling with family or just want a laid-back afternoon. The long stretch of sand has plenty of room to spread out, calm water for swimming, and shaded picnic areas under the pine trees.

If you want a quieter spot, head to Baldwin Beach. You’ll find the best views of Mount Tallac and fewer crowds. It’s a peaceful atmosphere that’s perfect for relaxing. The wide sandy shoreline is great for long walks, and the sunsets here are some of the best around the lake.

No matter which beach you choose, you’ll quickly see why Lake Tahoe is one of the most beautiful places to spend a summer day.

15. Visit Thunderbird Lodge

Looking for something super unique? One of Lake Tahoe’s coolest hidden gems is the Thunderbird Lodge. Tucked along the lake’s eastern shoreline on the Nevada side, it’s a historic estate that feels like you’re stepping into another era. Built in the 1930s by millionaire George Whittell Jr., the property is full of fascinating stories, unique architecture, and beautiful lake views.

The only way to visit is on a guided tour, and you’ll need to reserve it online before visiting. They are available throughout the summer on Tuesdays and Fridays! 

As you explore the grounds, you’ll see the stone mansion, gardens, and the famous boathouse built directly over the water. This unique structure is one of Thunderbird Lodge’s most iconic features, with its stone tower rising from the shoreline and providing a dramatic backdrop for Lake Tahoe views. Inside, you’ll find the Thunderbird yacht, a restored wooden boat that is considered one of the most iconic vessels on the lake.
