Start your morning with breakfast at your hotel or a café in Funchal’s old town—we loved Art Food Corner for something light and tasty to kick things off. It’s one of those places where everything feels fresh and homemade, and the atmosphere is super chill.

Their fresh juices are a must here, especially if you’re after something light and energizing. They open at 9 am (10 am on Sundays), giving you a relaxed start to the day. Best of all, it’s just a 2-minute walk from the cable car station, so you can roll right into your morning activities without rushing.

Morning – The Funchal Cable Car and Monte Palace Tropical Garden

After breakfast, make your way to the Funchal cable car! It’s just a 2-minute walk from Art Food Corner, which makes the timing perfect. This scenic ride up to Monte takes about 15 minutes and offers sweeping views over the city, the harbor, and the mountains behind. It’s such a relaxing way to ease into your first day, and the views are seriously photo-worthy, so keep your camera handy.

Tickets cost €14.50 one-way or €20 round-trip, and you can grab them online here or directly at the station. The cable car runs daily from 9 am to 5:45 pm, but we recommend arriving around 10:00–10:30 am for a relaxed morning.

Once you get to the top, head straight into the Monte Palace Tropical Garden. It’s one of the most beautiful spots in Madeira, filled with exotic plants, koi ponds, tiled pathways, and African stone sculptures scattered throughout. The views from up here are incredible, and the whole place feels peaceful and slightly surreal. Entry is €15 per adult, and you’ll want at least an hour to wander the gardens.

Lunch – Taberna Madeira

You’ll be wrapping up your time in Monte around noon, which is the perfect time to ride the cable car back down and grab lunch. We recommend the grilled espada (black scabbardfish), tuna steak with fried corn, or the espetada—juicy beef skewers served dramatically on a hanging spit. Whatever you do, don’t skip the bolo do caco. It’s fresh, garlicky, and wildly addictive!

They’re open for lunch from 11:30 am to 2:00 pm, which fits perfectly after your garden stroll. The service is friendly, the prices are super reasonable, and the portions are just right, especially since you’ll want to save room for a food tour later in the afternoon.

Early Afternoon – Explore the streets of Funchal

You’ve got a couple of hours to spare before the food tour, which makes this the perfect window to explore the charming streets of Funchal at your own pace. Just a 5-minute walk from Taberna Madeira, the Mercado dos Lavradores is a lively local market full of color, smells, and sounds. You’ll find stalls stacked with tropical fruits, locally grown spices, and handwoven crafts, plus friendly vendors happy to offer samples. Don’t miss the fish market in the back. It’s home to Madeira’s famous black scabbardfish and other Atlantic catches laid out fresh on ice.

Even if you’re not in the mood to buy, it’s a great way to soak in the daily rhythms of life here. You might even leave with a pocketful of dried fruit or a small spice blend to take home!

This cobbled little lane in the heart of the old town is one of the most unique corners of Funchal. We started with a spread of local cheeses and charcuterie, followed by warm, garlicky bolo do caco (it’s so good we asked for seconds). But the biggest surprise was trying scabbardfish with banana, a combo we never thought we’d like, but totally fell for. 

We also sipped different types of poncha (the local sugarcane drink), and the passion fruit version was a standout. The evening wrapped up on a sweet note with a flaky pastel de nata.

Evening – A nighttime stroll along the promenade

The food tour wraps up around 8 pm, and by then, you’ll be more than full, so no need to plan dinner tonight. Instead, take it easy with a relaxing walk along the Funchal waterfront promenade. The lights dancing on the harbor, the ocean breeze, and the calm evening vibe make it a peaceful way to unwind.

Our absolute favorite experience in Madeira is this full-day 4×4 Jeep tour! It runs from 9 am to 5 pm and includes pickup and drop-off from your Funchal accommodation, so all you have to do is hop in and enjoy the ride.

The adventure starts in São Vicente, a peaceful town known for its volcanic caves and vineyards. From there, we made our way to the dramatic Véu da Noiva viewpoint, where the waterfall cascades down the cliffs like a bride’s veil. It’s one of the most iconic views on the island!

Next up was Porto Moniz, home to crystal-clear volcanic swimming pools that are perfect for a dip. But nothing got our hearts racing like standing on the Cabo Girão Skywalk, a glass-floored lookout perched high above the Atlantic.

As the sun dips behind the hills and the city lights start to flicker on, it’s the kind of view that makes you stop and just take it all in.

Day 3

Breakfast – Vera Cruz

Start day three like a local with breakfast at Vera Cruz, a laid-back café right on Avenida Arriaga. With plenty of outdoor seating and a prime spot for people-watching, it’s the kind of place where you can ease into the day without rushing.

Grab a galão (a milky Portuguese coffee) and pair it with a pastel de nata or a warm, toasted bolo do caco. Both are simple, delicious, and perfect for fueling up before a morning on the water. The menu also includes a few light savory options if you’re after something more filling, and the service is fast and friendly.

They open bright and early at 6 am (6:30 am on Saturdays) and are closed on Sundays. Arriving around 8:30 am gives you plenty of time to enjoy your breakfast before the short walk to the marina for your tour. It’s just a 5-minute stroll from here, making it a super convenient (and tasty) way to start the day.

Morning – Spot dolphins and whales on a catamaran cruise

If you’re a wildlife lover like we are, you can’t pass up this 3-hour catamaran cruise along Madeira’s stunning southern coast! It ended up being one of our most memorable mornings. The tour departs from Funchal Marina and uses a silent, eco-friendly engine, which not only helps protect marine life but also makes it easier to spot dolphins and whales without disturbing them.

Timings can vary a bit, but we recommend choosing the 10 am departure if possible, which gives you the perfect amount of time after breakfast and still leaves your afternoon wide open. If the 12 pm option is the earliest available, you’ll just want to push lunch a little later, and expect your afternoon and evening plans to shift back slightly, too. 

Once on board, we stretched out on the deck and soaked up the sun as the crew shared fun facts about the region’s marine life. It wasn’t long before we spotted a pod of bottlenose dolphins, gliding through the waves right beside us.

Then came the highlight—pilot whales, slowly cruising past in a calm, unforgettable moment. The boat also stops near Cabo Girão, one of the tallest sea cliffs in the world, for a quick swim if conditions are good. Definitely pack swimwear, a towel, and sun protection. The breeze is cooling, but the sun is intense out there!

We sailed past Câmara de Lobos, with its postcard-perfect fishing boats, and even caught a glimpse of the famous Reid’s Hotel before heading back to Funchal. It was peaceful, scenic, and packed with wildlife—an absolute must while in Madeira!

Lunch – Beerhouse Madeira

After returning to shore, head over to Beerhouse Madeira for a relaxed waterfront lunch and a cold brew or two. It’s just a short walk from the marina, making it an easy and satisfying stop after your morning cruise. The vibe is casual and lively, with plenty of outdoor seating right by the water.

The menu features a mix of local seafood, grilled meats, and lighter options like salads and toasts—great for whatever mood you’re in. Their local taps are worth trying, especially if you’re into craft styles. Expect to finish up here around 2:30–3 pm, leaving you with a chill afternoon ahead.

Afternoon – São Tiago Fortress and a seaside walk

After lunch, make your way to the eastern edge of the old town to visit the São Tiago Fortress. With its bright yellow walls and oceanfront setting, it’s hard to miss. Inside, you’ll find a small contemporary art museum featuring works by local Portuguese artists, plus a rooftop terrace with great views over the bay. Entry is around €3, and you’ll want to spend about 30 to 45 minutes wandering through the exhibits and soaking in the scenery.

From there, enjoy a scenic coastal walk along the Barreirinha waterfront. For dinner, book a table at Armazém do Sal, a former salt warehouse turned Michelin-starred restaurant that blends Madeiran tradition with refined, creative flair. The space feels elegant but not over-the-top, with vaulted stone ceilings and a warm, welcoming atmosphere that’s perfect for a mid-trip dinner treat.

The menu features elevated takes on local staples—think fresh seafood, pork belly, and house-made sauces all beautifully plated and thoughtfully paired with a strong Portuguese wine list. Service is attentive without being stiff, and the experience feels polished yet relaxed. Definitely book online here ahead of time if you’re visiting in peak season. It’s popular for good reason!

Evening – Relax the evening away with live music

After dinner, wind down at Flair Spot Bar, a stylish rooftop lounge just a short walk from the old town. With comfy seating, a modern vibe, and panoramic views over Funchal, it’s a great spot to sip a drink while soaking in the evening glow.

Many nights feature live music, from acoustic sets to smooth jazz, perfect for a laid-back end to the day. The vibe strikes a nice balance: elevated but unpretentious, with good energy and a relaxed pace. Live music varies, so check their Instagram here or ask your hotel about the schedule before you go.

Although if you’re planning to catch tomorrow’s sunrise hike, you might want to skip the nightcap and get a good night’s sleep instead!

Morning – Your choice!

You’ve got two amazing ways to start the day, depending on your energy levels and travel style. For early risers and nature lovers, the Pico Ruivo Sunrise Hike offers a short, spectacular trek to the highest point in Madeira, complete with stargazing and a bucket-list sunrise moment. But if you’d rather ease into your morning, the Trike Tour is a fun, scenic ride that still packs in sweeping views, without any uphill hiking.

Either option is a fantastic way to experience Madeira’s rugged beauty. Pick the one that suits your vibe and enjoy a morning to remember.

Option 1 – Enjoy a gorgeous sunrise from Madeira’s highest point

This small-group sunrise hike to Pico Ruivo, Madeira’s highest point, is a standout experience and absolutely worth the early start. Pickup is around 4 am from your hotel in Funchal, and from there, your group of six (or fewer!) heads to the mountain.

Before you even start hiking, you’ll get to admire Madeira’s night sky, filled with stars and constellations. Our amazing guide, Carlos, pointed them out while we geared up with torches, jackets, and tea. 

The 1.5-mile (2.5-km) trail is short but steady, and Carlos paced it perfectly, encouraging us all the way. We reached the summit just in time to watch the sky transform. And let me just say that the sunrise from Ruivo Peak is unlike any other!

At the top, Carlos had hot tea and granola bars ready—small comforts that made a big difference as we took in the breathtaking views. On the way back down, the trail felt completely different in daylight, revealing sweeping ridgelines and lush valleys we hadn’t seen on the ascent. It was like getting two hikes in one!

The entire tour lasts about 4.5 hours, so you’ll be back in Funchal by 9 am, with the rest of the morning free to nap or take it slow. It’s not for everyone due to the early hour, but if you can handle the wake-up call, this is hands-down one of the most rewarding things to do in Madeira!
