We grabbed a table outside right when they opened at 7 am and fueled up with chilaquiles and huevos divorciados, though the cinnamon-dusted French toast with fresh fruit was hard to pass up. The coffee’s strong, the service is warm, and the laid-back setting makes it a perfect first stop before heading to the marina for a morning on the water. Morning – Spot humpbacks on a whale-watching tour with a marine biologist

After breakfast, we made the short 4-minute walk from the café to the marina for one of Cabo’s most unforgettable experiences: this small-group whale-watching tour led by a marine biologist.

We booked the 8 am to 10:30 am time slot, which meant calmer seas and clearer skies for spotting wildlife. The small boat kept the vibe intimate, with plenty of room for everyone to see and snap photos. Unlike many of the larger, more commercial tours, this one felt personal and more like an ocean safari than a sightseeing cruise.

Aboard, our guide shared insights into whale behavior and local marine life as we cruised past El Arco, the sea lion colony, and other iconic Cabo landmarks, all while scanning the horizon for breaching whales and playful dolphins. Spoiler alert: we saw a lot!

This isn’t a party cruise, but a respectful, educational, and honestly awe-inspiring experience. After the whale-watching tour, we took the next hour or so to explore one of our favorite low-key stops, the artisan market near the marina. It’s just a 5-minute walk inland from the dock, tucked along the waterfront promenade and side streets near the Puerto Paraiso Mall.

Strolling past the stalls, we found everything from handwoven bags and silver jewelry to colorful ceramics and handmade souvenirs. It’s a great chance to pick up something meaningful, chat with local vendors, or just browse at your own pace. If you’re ready for a cool-down, nearby juice stands offer fresh fruit smoothies and paletas (Mexican popsicles)—perfect for a quick refresher under the sun.

There are also plenty of shaded benches along the promenade if you’d rather sit and relax with a view of the boats. And if you need a break from the heat, Puerto Paraiso Mall is right there with air-conditioning, clean public restrooms, and a few indoor shops to duck into before heading out for lunch.

Lunch – Fresh seafood with a local twist at Los Tres Gallos

By about noon, we were ready for something flavorful but relaxing, and Los Tres Gallos hit the spot. Just a 7-minute walk from the artisan market or Puerto Paraiso Mall, this tucked-away gem offers a refined take on traditional Mexican cuisine, right near the heart of the marina without the noise or crowds.

We grabbed a table in the shaded courtyard, surrounded by colorful tiles and lush greenery, and settled in for a slow lunch. The menu features rich, regional flavors—think cochinita pibil, shrimp-stuffed chiles, and handmade tortillas that arrive warm and fragrant. We paired our meal with an agua fresca (though harder drinks are available if you’re ready for one) and appreciated how efficient the service was without feeling rushed.

Afternoon – Kayak and snorkel at El Arco and Pelican Rock

After lunch, we walked back toward the marina for this kayak and snorkel tour at 2 pm, and honestly, it turned out to be one of the most memorable parts of our entire trip. It’s about a 10- to 15-minute walk from Los Tres Gallos, and since check-in is 15 minutes early, we recommend wrapping up lunch by 1:30 pm to give yourself plenty of time.

Rather than hop on a boat like most visitors, we paddled out in a two-person glass-bottom kayak, which made the whole experience feel even more immersive. The route hugs the coastline, so it’s beginner-friendly and easy to manage, even if you’ve never kayaked before. 

Our guide kept the pace relaxed and made sure everyone was comfortable as we passed Lovers Beach, the sea lion colony, and, of course, the dramatic rock formations of El Arco, also known as Land’s End. Day 4

By day four in Cabo, the heat and crowds can start to wear on you, which is why this private day trip to Todos Santos felt like the perfect change of pace. 

We were picked up around 10 am in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle and headed north along the coast for about 1.5 hours toward this colorful colonial town, officially designated a Pueblo Mágico (Magic Town) for its charm and cultural significance.

We started with a guided walk through the historic center, passing colorful architecture, the Hotel California, and charming chapels and plazas. Our guide, Carlos, was informative and personable, but always gave us space to explore at our own pace. After the walk, we had time to browse local art galleries and artisan shops, with plenty of photo ops and souvenir stops.

Lunch was at Tequila’s Sunrise Bar & Grill, famous for its chiles rellenos and classic drinks (note: it’s cash only, and not included in the tour). Next up was a fun, flavorful deep dive into Mexico’s traditional spirits led by a local expert. 

And just when we thought the day couldn’t get better, we found ourselves barefoot at Playa Las Palmas, a secluded beach tucked among palm trees, and finishing it all off with homemade ice cream at Nevería Rocco before returning to Cabo around 4 pm.

The food tour wraps up around 3:30 pm, leaving the rest of the evening to use as you’d like. We wanted to take in those ocean views a bit more, so we stopped by Baja Brewing for a local craft beer overlooking the water and crescent-shaped beach below. Luckily, the brewery was just a 15-minute walk from the end of our cooking class, which gave us a chance to walk off some of that food!

Then, with a little more time to kill, we headed down to Playa el Medano Los Cabos to dig our toes in the sand and go for a swim in the salty water. The perfect ending to our time in Cabo!

Where to Stay in Cabo San Lucas

Now that you have the perfect itinerary all planned, you need somewhere comfortable to stay! Whether you’re looking for an all-inclusive resort, a hotel with a great location, or something budget-friendly, you can find it in Cabo. If these hotels are still available when you’re ready to book, they will be your best options.

Grand Velas Los Cabos Luxury All Inclusive – $$$

Looking to go all-out on accommodation? One of the most luxurious resorts in Cabo San Lucas is Grand Velas, which even has its own private beach. This all-inclusive property also features three infinity pools, and a spa, and every room has a view of the sea. There are also five restaurants on-site including Mexican, Italian, and French cuisine, so you’ll never get tired of the selection!

This is an upscale property, so rooms start at around $1,500 USD per night. You can check availability online here.

Playa Grande Resort – $$

Located on a private beach in Cabo and close to the marina, you’ll love the feel of Playa Grande Resort. There’s a spa, three outdoor pools, and beautiful Mexican décor and tiled floors. You’ll also have a kitchen or kitchenette and a balcony. This resort has the option to be all-inclusive if you want meals taken care of, or you can enjoy all the local food in the area.

Mayan Monkey Hostel Los Cabos – $

Located in downtown Cabo, Mayan Monkey Hostel keeps you in the action and party atmosphere Cabo is famous for while being easy on the wallet. It’s only five minutes from the beach or there’s an outdoor swimming pool to cool off in. There’s entertainment and activities like DJs in the evenings or ping-pong tables, and it’s a fun place to meet new people.

If you’re okay with sharing a room, you can stay here for SUPER cheap. You can find a bed in a dorm-style room with 6 to 12 beds for around $20-30 USD a night, or there are private rooms in the $100 USD range. You can grab your spot on Booking.com.

Renting a Car in Mexico

Undoubtedly, one of the best ways to get around Mexico is in a rental car. 

I struggled to get around by bus and taxi for the longest time. But after renting a car in Cancun in 2023, I never looked back. It allowed me to explore the country without worrying about tours or taxis. It was why I fell in love with Mexico and eventually decided to live here periodically. 

I refuse to use local services whenever I rent a car in Mexico. The truth is they sometimes can’t be trusted or come with hidden fees (or costly insurance that doesn’t make sense.) There are even rental car scams! So instead, I use Discover Cars, the company most experienced travelers or ex-pats in Mexico recommend. Read my honest review of Discover Cars here for more details!

The rates on Discover Cars are cheap, too, with the average rental costing around $25 USD per day. Full coverage insurance can be added for an extra $10 USD a day too. 

Driving in Mexico also only requires a driver’s license using the Roman alphabet. If yours uses another like Japan and China, you simply need an international driving permit. 

Insurance is required, but if you book with Discover Cars and get the full coverage, that’s all you need! Oh, and being over 18 is required, and if you’re over 25, your rental will be much cheaper!
