Two days gives you enough time to see the main highlights without cramming too much in! We’ve worked in historic sights, a private sunset sail, Carolina Beach State Park, and a choice of two very different afternoon activities. You’ll also have time to explore some of Wilmington’s coolest neighborhoods and eat very well along the way. Let’s get into it!

Itinerary Overview
🚲Day 1: Explore By E-bike, WWII Battleship & Sunset Sail
Explore Wilmington on an e-bike tour, visit the historic Battleship North Carolina, then enjoy a private sunset sail and dinner downtown.
🌊Day 2: Carolina Beach State Park, Brewery Tour/Scenic Cruise & Cargo District
See wild Venus flytraps at Carolina Beach State Park, choose between a brewery tour or a scenic cruise, then spend your final evening exploring the Cargo District.
Day 1
Breakfast – Bean There Cafe
We’re kicking off day one with breakfast at Bean There Cafe. It opens bright and early at 6 am most days, so there’s plenty of time to grab some food and coffee before this morning’s e-bike tour.
The breakfast menu has everything from breakfast sandwiches and burritos to avocado toast, plus lots of freshly baked pastries if you’re after something lighter. And, of course, there’s plenty of coffee to get you ready for a busy day of exploring!
Bean There is actually located in the Cargo District, which is where this morning’s bike tour begins. It’s only around a three-minute drive or 15-minute walk to the meeting point, so you can enjoy a nice, leisurely start rather than rushing across town.
Morning – See historic sights on an e-bike
After breakfast, make your way over to the Cargo District for the 10 am start of this e-bike tour. We did this while we were in Wilmington, and it was such a fun way to get to know the city at the beginning of our trip!
Over the next 2.5 hours, you’ll cover a surprising amount of ground without having to work too hard, thanks to the electric bikes. We rode through some of Wilmington’s coolest neighborhoods and into historic downtown, and our guide, Jim, was fantastic at bringing the city’s history to life along the way. He was super knowledgeable and clearly really enthusiastic about Wilmington!
One of our favorite parts was Greenfield Lake Park. It’s a gorgeous change of scenery from downtown, with wooden bridges and trails winding around the water. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife here too, because you might even spot an alligator!
Depending on the day, you can also take a short break in the Soda Pop District or continue to Oakdale Cemetery, North Carolina’s oldest rural garden cemetery. The tour wraps up at around 12:30 pm, by which point you’ll already have a much better feel for Wilmington. Then it’s time to grab some lunch before continuing into the Historic District for this afternoon’s sightseeing.
Lunch – The Half Downtown
After the e-bike tour wraps up at around 12:30 pm, head to The Half for lunch. This cozy neighborhood sandwich shop is conveniently located on the way towards the Historic District, so it fits perfectly into today’s plans.
The menu is packed with creative sandwiches, and we love that there are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options too. You can go classic with turkey or pastrami, or try something a little different like the tofu banh mi. Each sandwich comes with a side, so it’s a nice filling lunch after spending the morning cycling around Wilmington.
The atmosphere is super casual, so you don’t need to worry about staying here for ages. Grab your sandwich, refuel, and then we’re heading over to one of Wilmington’s most famous historic attractions!
Afternoon – Visit the historic battleship North Carolina
After lunch, make your way over to the Battleship North Carolina. It’s only around a seven-minute drive from The Half, so aim to arrive at around 1:30 or 2 pm. That gives you plenty of time to explore before it closes at 5 pm!
The North Carolina was one of the most decorated American battleships of World War II, earning 15 battle stars while serving in the Pacific. Today, it’s permanently moored across the Cape Fear River from downtown Wilmington and serves as a floating museum and memorial.
What’s really cool is just how much of the ship you can explore! The self-guided route covers nine levels, taking you through the crew’s living quarters, engine room, gun turrets, and even up to the bridge. Allow at least two hours because there’s a lot to see once you get onboard – more than we initially expected, for sure!
Adult admission is currently $14 USD, and the battleship is open daily from 8 am to 5 pm. Once you’ve finished exploring, head back to your hotel for a well-earned break and freshen up before tonight’s sunset sail!
Evening – Enjoy a private sunset sail
After a break at your hotel, it’s time for our favorite experience in Wilmington! We did this private sailing charter at sunset, and it was the perfect way to round off our first day.
For this itinerary, book the sunset departure, which will usually be sometime between 5 and 6 pm. The meeting point is at Wrightsville Beach, around a 15- to 20-minute drive from the Historic District, so make sure you leave your hotel with plenty of time to get there. The cruise lasts for two hours, which means you’ll finish at around 7 to 8 pm.
This experience is completely private for groups of up to six people, so it really does feel special. We could just sit back, enjoy the views, and chat with our skipper without sharing the boat with a big tour group. You can also bring your own drinks and snacks on board, which we definitely took advantage of!
There are several departure times available, but for this itinerary, we recommend booking the sunset option. This usually departs between 5 and 6 pm and finishes around 7 or 8 pm, depending on the time of year. We went at sunset and the evening light made an already fantastic experience even better. After all, nothing beats watching the sun go down out on the water!
Just make sure you book this one in advance. The private sailing slots are limited and frequently sell out, especially around sunset. If your dates are fixed, we really wouldn’t risk leaving it until the last minute.
Dinner – Seabird
After your sunset sail, head back into Wilmington’s Historic District for dinner at Seabird. This is one of the more upscale meals we’ve included in the itinerary, and we think it’s a great choice for your first night in Wilmington!
Seabird specializes in seafood and celebrates ingredients from the North Carolina coast, so to us, it only seemed right to eat here after spending an evening out on the water! The restaurant itself is set inside a historic building, with a stylish but cozy atmosphere that makes it feel special, though not too formal.
After dinner, don’t rush straight back to your hotel! Take a stroll along the Riverwalk and enjoy the Historic District at night. If you’ve still got room for something sweet, stop at Gelarto, which sits right on the Cape Fear River. They have more than 40 Italian gelato flavors, so there’s a pretty good chance you’ll find something that tickles your fancy.
Then it’s time to call it a night. We’ve got an early start tomorrow!

Day 2
Breakfast – Drift Coffee Shop & Kitchen
We’ve got another busy day ahead, so get an early start with breakfast at Drift Coffee Shop & Kitchen Downtown. If you’re staying in the Historic District as we did, this is a really convenient option, and it opens at 7 am. We suggest getting here at around 7:30 am so you can enjoy breakfast without eating into too much of the morning – pun fully intended!
Drift is a great spot if you’re craving something fresh and healthy. We loved the avocado toast and smoothies, and of course there’s plenty of coffee to help you wake up ahead of this morning’s adventure.
We’re heading out of central Wilmington after breakfast, so if you’re staying elsewhere, don’t worry about making a special trip downtown. You can always grab breakfast somewhere closer to your hotel instead. Either way, be sure to fuel up because next we’re heading out to Carolina Beach State Park, and you’ll only find the most basic provisions there.
Morning – Carolina Beach State Park
After breakfast, drive around 20 minutes south from Wilmington’s Historic District to Carolina Beach State Park. It’s only about 12 miles from the city, but it feels like a completely different side of the area.
Did you know that Venus flytraps grow wild in North Carolina? Carolina Beach State Park is one of the few places in the world where these fascinating carnivorous plants are native, so we think it’s well worth making the trip to see them!
We suggest starting with the aptly named Flytrap Trail, which gives you the chance to spot Venus flytraps growing naturally. They’re much smaller than you might expect, so keep a close eye out as you walk.
If you want to explore a little further, check out the Sugarloaf Trail too. This route takes you past Sugarloaf Dune, a 50-foot sand dune that was once an important landmark for sailors navigating the Cape Fear River. There’s plenty of other wildlife and native plant life to look out for around the park too.
After your walk, head over to Carolina Beach and check out its vintage boardwalk before lunch. It has a fun, nostalgic feel and we think it makes a nice contrast to the trails you’ve just explored!
Lunch – Stoked Restaurant
After a morning exploring Carolina Beach State Park, you’ll probably be ready for a good lunch! Stoked Restaurant is just outside the park and sits right on the harbor, so you can grab a table overlooking the water and enjoy a much-needed rest.
The menu has plenty of coastal favorites, including peel-and-eat shrimp, fish tacos, crab cakes, and seafood platters. But if you’re not in the mood for seafood, no worries, because there are also burgers and salads on the menu.
How long you spend here depends on which afternoon option you choose. If you’re doing the VW brewery tour, don’t hang around for too long! Head back to your hotel after lunch to get cleaned up, as the tour can pick you up directly from your accommodation.
If you’re choosing the Eagle Island cruise instead, you’ve got much more time to play with. You can enjoy a leisurely lunch, then take a wander along the Carolina Beach Boardwalk before heading back towards Wilmington for the cruise.
Afternoon Option 1 – Discover Wilmington’s breweries in a ’72 VW Bus
Okay, how fun does this sound? After lunch, you can spend the afternoon exploring Wilmington’s craft beer scene in an actual 1972 VW Bus!
You can book either the three- or four-hour version of this private brewery tour, depending on how many stops you want to make. The start time is flexible too, so for this itinerary, we recommend arranging pickup for around 1 or 2 pm. You can decide exactly when depending on how much time you want to spend at Carolina Beach State Park that morning!
Best of all, the tour itself is completely customizable. You can choose which breweries you want to visit or ask for recommendations based on the kinds of beer you like. There are tons of options around Wilmington, including Flytrap Brewing and Flying Machine Brewing, and you don’t have to stick exclusively to beer either. You can work in a distillery or cocktail stop if that’s more your thing.
But honestly, the vintage VW is what makes this tour so much fun! It has a custom interior, space for up to seven people, a Bluetooth speaker, and a cooler with ice and bottled water.
Best of all, pickup and drop-off are included from Wilmington and the surrounding beach towns, so nobody has to volunteer to be the designated driver. If you’re traveling with a group, we think this is such a fun way to spend your final afternoon!
Afternoon Option 2 – Enjoy an Eagle Island cruise
If a brewery tour isn’t your thing, or you’d rather spend more time around Carolina Beach, we think that this Eagle Island cruise is a great alternative. It only lasts 50 minutes, so you can enjoy a chilled-out morning and a leisurely lunch before heading back into Wilmington for an afternoon departure. We’d aim for around 3 pm!
This is also a good choice if you want to get back out on the Cape Fear River without committing to another long boat trip. The cruise is narrated, so you’ll learn more about Wilmington’s history and ecology while enjoying the views from the water.
The exact route depends on which departure you book. Some cruises head north past historic downtown and Eagle Island, where you can spot shipwrecks and get another view of the Battleship North Carolina. Others travel south beneath the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge towards the State Ports, with commentary about Wilmington’s World War II shipbuilding history along the way.
We think this option works especially well if you want a more laid-back afternoon. It’s short but scenic, and gives you another perspective on Wilmington before your final evening in the city. And don’t just take our word for it, because you can read hundreds of 5-star reviews here!
Evening/Dinner – Check out the Cargo District
For your final evening in Wilmington, head to the Cargo District. This is easily one of the city’s coolest areas, where old shipping containers have been transformed into shops, bars, restaurants, and creative spaces! It feels a world away from the Historic District, so coming here for dinner is a fun way to see a different side of Wilmington and wrap up your time here.
There are plenty of places to grab dinner here, so go with your mood! Banh Sai is a popular spot for Asian fusion, or if you’re craving a burger, head to Mess Hall ILM.
After dinner, the rest of the evening is totally up to you! You could head to Cargo Cade for arcade games and drinks, or stop by End of Days Distillery to try some locally made spirits. And if you’re in the mood for live music, Bowstring is always a good time!
Of course, there’s every chance that you might feel like something a little more low-key after two busy days in Wilmington. If that’s the case, just head back to the Historic District and take one final walk along the Riverwalk for one last look at Wilmington by night.

Where to Stay in Wilmington, North Carolina
For this trip, we definitely recommend staying around the Riverwalk and Historic District. This is the most charming part of Wilmington, and you’ll have tons of restaurants and shops nearby, plus the Cape Fear River right on your doorstep. You’ll still want a car for exploring further afield, but downtown itself is really easy to enjoy on foot.
Luxury – $$$
If you’re looking for somewhere a little more special, Embassy Suites by Hilton Wilmington Riverfront is our luxury pick. It’s right on the Cape Fear River at the northern end of the Riverwalk, so the location is fantastic for exploring downtown.
The big draw here is definitely the waterfront setting, and we think it’s a great choice if you want somewhere that feels a little more upscale while still keeping you close to the action. The spacious suites are a bonus too, especially if you like having a little more room to spread out.

Mid-range – $$
For a stylish mid-range option, check out Aloft Wilmington at Coastline Center. It’s also right by the Riverwalk, so you can easily head out and explore the Historic District without having to get in the car.
The hotel has a much more modern feel, and we especially like the rooftop bar overlooking the Cape Fear River. There’s also a really cute terrace next to the water with fairy lights in the evening, which is an ideal spot for a sundowner or a nightcap. We think this is a fun choice if you want a central location with a bit more personality!

Budget – $
If you’re trying to keep accommodation costs down, Best Western Plus Coastline Inn gives you a fantastic location for less. It sits right beside the river, close to the northern end of the Riverwalk, so you’re certainly not sacrificing convenience by choosing our budget pick, and the property even has its own pier over the water!
The rooms are fairly simple, but some have lovely views across the Cape Fear River. Breakfast is included too, which is always handy when you’re trying to keep costs down while traveling!
