Our personal FAVORITE thing we did was this wetlands boat tour! We cruised through the narrow river and swamp, spotting gators, turtles, and all sorts of birdlife. Our guide taught us so much about the Carolina wetlands!

Things to do in Myrtle Beach

1. Explore one of South Carolina’s most scenic coastal parks by Segway

Not every adventure in Myrtle Beach involves sand between your toes. One of our favorite surprises was gliding through the lush trails of Huntington Beach State Park on this small-group Segway tour, surrounded by wildlife and wide-open space.

It had been a while since either of us had been on a Segway before, but our guide, Bob, made it easy from the start. He gave us a quick, helpful intro and had us rolling in no time. The small group made the experience feel personal, like a guided nature walk, just with wheels.

We cruised past freshwater lakes, through shady forest paths, and along quiet stretches where birds flew overhead and alligators lounged in the sun.

Bob shared fascinating facts about the local ecosystem, the park’s history, and even pointed out spots we would’ve missed entirely on our own. We also stopped by the Environmental Education Center, where we saw endangered loggerhead turtles up close, and had the option to visit the Atalaya Castle afterward—an unexpected architectural gem tucked inside the park.

This tour was the perfect mix of adventure and nature. It was peaceful, fun, and full of surprises, and it’s clear we’re not the only ones who loved it. Just check out the five-star reviews here to see why it’s one of Myrtle Beach’s best-kept secrets!

2. Connect with nature on a peaceful cruise through the Carolina wetlands

Myrtle Beach might be all about the boardwalk and surf, but after a few days of crowds and sunscreen, we were craving something quieter and cooler. This scenic river tour through the Waccamaw’s cypress-lined waters was exactly the reset we needed.

We made our way to the boat launch to meet the captain and were welcomed by the kind of genuine Southern hospitality you just can’t fake. Our guide and his wife run this small family business together, and their love for the area shines through in every story they tell.

At one point, they even paused the boat just to show us a hidden bend in the river where turtles like to cluster. Little moments like that made it feel so personal!

They were sharp, funny, and clearly knew the river like the back of their hands. We spotted a few alligators lurking near the banks, turtles sunning on logs, and even a couple of osprey gliding above us.

The cruise lasted about two hours, but it flew by. We left relaxed, happy, and already talking about doing it again.

This isn’t some big-box tour, but rather a passion project run by people who love where they live. Check out over a THOUSAND five-star reviews here to see why travelers keep coming back!

3. Go on a sightseeing day trip to Charleston and Fort Sumter

There’s more to a South Carolina getaway than sunburns and souvenir shops. After a few days of beach-town buzz, we were ready to trade sand for cobblestones, and this Charleston and Fort Sumter day trip turned out to be one of the most rewarding parts of our entire vacation.

We hopped onto a comfy, air-conditioned motorcoach and kicked back while our driver, Wendy (who was incredible!), gave us a warm and easy start to the day. The first stop was a horse-drawn carriage ride through Charleston’s historic district.

Rolling past grand mansions and cobblestone streets felt like flipping through the pages of a living history book. From there, we wandered through the City Market, picking up local crafts and snacks before boarding the harbor cruise. I couldn’t resist grabbing a sweetgrass basket and a bag of candied pecans—they made the perfect souvenirs (and snacks for the bus ride back).

The boat ride around Charleston Harbor came with live narration, boxed lunches, and close-up views of Fort Sumter—the very place where the Civil War began.

It was equal parts relaxing and eye-opening. And just when we thought the day couldn’t get better, we arrived at Boone Hall Plantation. Touring the estate and original slave cabins brought South Carolina’s complex past to life in a meaningful way.

Everything was well-paced, well-planned, and so worth it! We loved how it combined history, scenery, and culture without ever feeling rushed, like getting the best of Charleston in one unforgettable day.

4. Sing along with the stars at Myrtle Beach’s ultimate tribute show

Myrtle Beach has its fair share of nightlife, but this is where the real icons come out to play. This tribute concert brings the biggest names in music history together on one stage with spot-on tribute acts so good, you’ll forget they’re impersonators.

From the moment the curtain rises, it’s pure energy! We saw five world-class tribute artists in one night, backed by a live band, dazzling lights, and dancers who didn’t miss a beat. The crowd was instantly on board—cheering, singing along, and soaking up every moment like it was the real deal.

Elvis shook the house, Adele gave us chills, and the Blues Brothers had us clapping like it was 1980. Each act was so committed to their character’s voice, look, and mannerisms. It felt like watching the real thing!

Located at Broadway at the Beach, the theater is right in the heart of the action. It’s easy to pair the show with dinner, drinks, or some souvenir shopping. And bonus: after the performance, the artists came out for free photos and autographs. No long lines, just genuine appreciation.

Whether you’re a lifelong fan of Motown, pop, rock, or country, there’s something (and someone!) here for you. Plus, with a rotating seasonal lineup, each visit feels like a new concert!

5. Learn to surf with a professional surf instructor

There’s something undeniably cool about surfing, until you’re standing on the beach wondering how in the world to start, that’s precisely why I booked this surfing lesson. Daniel already knows how to surf, but I was determined to figure it out – spoiler: I did!

You can choose between a one- or two-hour lesson, but we’d definitely recommend going for the full two hours if you want a solid chance at catching some good waves. It really makes a difference!

The instructor, Kevin, was the absolute best! He’s the kind of surfer who lives and breathes the ocean, but he never made us feel out of our depth. From the moment I met him, he was focused on safety, calm confidence, and, maybe most importantly, keeping things fun. After a quick dry-land session on paddling, popping up, and balance, we headed straight for the waves.

Kevin stayed by our side the entire time, cheering us on, coaching us through choppy spots, and helping us adjust until we were finally catching waves. At one point, I swear I felt like I was in a surf movie—minus the perfect form, of course.

With small group sizes and a personalized approach, it never felt overwhelming or rushed. Just you, your board, the ocean, and a guide who truly wants you to succeed!

6. Relive the golden age of soul at a high-energy Motown tribute show

Beach days are great, but when the sun goes down, you’ll want something more than just another round of mini golf. We were looking for a night out with real energy, and this Motown tribute at GTS Theatre delivered powerhouse vocals, nonstop hits, and a vibe that had everyone grooving in their seats.

From the second the lights dimmed, it was like being transported into a vinyl record. The performers didn’t just sing the hits—they channeled the soul and swagger of Motown legends like Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and the Temptations. Their stage presence was magnetic, and you could tell they were having just as much fun performing as we were watching.

“Dancing in the Streets” had the whole crowd moving in their seats (some folks couldn’t resist getting up entirely)! Whether you grew up with the Jackson 5 or just love a good throwback, the energy in the room was contagious.

What I loved most was the intimate setting. It was small enough to feel personal but lively enough to feel like a real event. You don’t need to be a superfan to have a blast here, just someone who appreciates great music and great vibes.

There’s really nothing else like it in Myrtle Beach. It’s a rare mix of nostalgia, talent, and feel-good energy that stays with you long after the curtain closes!

7. Step into the scene of a mob-style mystery with laughs, clues, and a meal

We wanted one night on our trip that was completely different—no beach, no boardwalk, just something offbeat and fun. This theatre experience delivered exactly that, in the form of a hilarious, 1930s mobster-themed murder mystery dinner show that had us laughing, guessing, and eating way too much pasta.

From the moment you step into the “speakeasy,” you’re part of the story. There’s music playing, actors mingling in character, and a vibe that makes it feel like you’ve time-traveled into an old gangster flick.

We were each assigned to one of four mafia families celebrating RigaTony’s birthday, until, of course, the murders started. We were cracking up within minutes—everyone was already suspicious of each other before the first course even hit the table.

As the drama unfolded between courses, we gathered clues, whispered theories, and used our $5 USD clue kits and black lights to uncover hidden hints (not required, but worth it). The actors were funny, quick-witted, and totally in character the entire time. And the food was surprisingly great. Manicotti, meatballs, and cannoli that definitely didn’t come from a mystery box!

The whole evening lasted about two hours and was packed with audience participation. Come early, there are surprises even before showtime, and be prepared to laugh, guess, and maybe even accuse your dinner companion of murder!

8. Paddle through winding marsh trails on a guided kayak tour

  • Highlights: Kayaking tour exploring the hidden gem of North Myrtle Beach’s salt marsh and island preserve, view and hold local wildlife, play in the water
  • Inclusions: Kayak, life jacket, paddle, and bottled water

  • Free cancellation: Yes

Turns out, Myrtle Beach’s most peaceful escape isn’t at the beach, it’s hidden in the winding salt marsh just behind it. This kayak eco-tour in North Myrtle Beach ended up being one of our favorite low-key adventures. No noise, no rush—just us, the water, and a whole lot of crabs.

We checked in (parking is $3 per hour and worth planning for) and got ready to hit the water. We went with a tandem kayak, but if you’d rather paddle solo, single kayaks are available too.

Our guides gave us a quick crash course in paddling, and even as total beginners, we felt totally at ease. The water was calm, and the crew was chill, attentive, and made sure everyone felt confident before heading into the marsh.

The moment we left the dock, it felt like entering a different world. Tall grass swayed on either side of the narrow paths, herons swooped low over the water, and we even stopped to scoop up tiny hermit crabs.

The vibe was laid-back, the views were unreal, and our guide kept things light while pointing out wildlife and dropping bits of local knowledge along the way.

This tour is calm, easy, and the kind of thing you don’t realize you needed until you’re out there doing it. It gave us a totally new perspective on the area—quiet, wild, and way more beautiful than we expected!

Renting a Car in the USA

View of the road and scenery driving down route 66 in USA

The United States is a vast country with diverse landscapes, from bustling cities to scenic national parks. While public transportation exists in major cities, renting a car is often the best way to explore the country’s wide-open spaces and hidden gems.

We always book with Discover Cars and can’t recommend them enough. It’s super easy to compare prices, check company ratings, find the right vehicle for your needs, and add affordable full coverage insurance. If you want a full breakdown, check out our Discover Cars review here.

Tips for Renting a Car in the USA

  • Drive on the right: In the U.S., vehicles drive on the right-hand side of the road, and the driver’s seat is on the left. If this is different than your home country, take some time to adjust before hitting busy streets!
  • Know the local rules: Speed limits, road signs, and driving laws can differ between states. For example, turning right on red is generally allowed after a complete stop, unless a sign indicates otherwise. Always check the specific rules for the states you’ll be driving in.
  • Add full insurance: We always recommend full coverage rental insurance, especially in the U.S., where long distances, varying road conditions, and unpredictable weather can lead to unexpected situations. Discover Cars makes it easy (and affordable!) to add this peace of mind when you book.
  • Choose the right car: Consider the nature of your trip. For city driving, a compact car is convenient, while for road trips or national park visits, an SUV might be more comfortable. With Discover Cars, it’s easy to filter by vehicle type, transmission, fuel efficiency, and more to find the perfect fit.

What You Need to Rent a Car in the USA

  • A valid driver’s license from your home country.
  • An International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended if your license is not in English or uses a non-Roman alphabet. Some rental companies may require it, so it’s best to check in advance.
  • A credit card in the driver’s name is typically required for the security deposit.
  • Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old, with a young driver surcharge applicable for those under 25. Some companies may have higher age requirements, so make sure you double-check.

Ready to hit the road? Book your car with Discover Cars here and discover the freedom of exploring the USA on your own terms!

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance!

If you’re looking to save money on travel insurance, we currently use and recommend SafetyWing. We’ve been using their coverage since 2018 and they’ve had our backs when we needed emergency flights and got sick overseas.

SafetyWing is one of the cheapest providers out there and covers everything from medical costs to lost luggage, travel delays, and emergency flights. A huge difference we’ve found between them and other companies is that they let you take out a policy AFTER leaving your home country. We’ve also found it handy that it’s a monthly payment rather than a lump sum, and you can get a refund for unused time.

SafetyWing has helped us out in some scary situations before and their affordable coverage has given us peace of mind. You can read our honest review of SafetyWing for all the pros and cons.
