Few experiences capture the thrill of the Whitsundays quite like skimming across its turquoise waters on a Jet Ski. This small-group tour keeps things personal and lets you choose your adventure—whether you’re after a short and scenic ride around Pioneer Bay, a two-island safari, or the ultimate full-day trek to a tropical resort.

After a hotel pickup in Airlie Beach, you’ll gear up with all the necessary equipment before hopping on your Jet Ski. Riders can go solo or tandem, making this tour perfect for couples or friends looking to share the fun. Once you’re out on the water, the adrenaline quickly blends with awe as you zip past white-sand coves, lush green islands, and possibly spot sea turtles, seabirds, or even dugongs gliding below.

Each route offers something unique: Pioneer Bay’s calm, scenic loop is ideal for beginners, the Two-Island Safari gives you more time to explore South Molle and Daydream Islands, while the Ultimate Island Trek (solo riders only) combines high-speed adventure with a relaxing resort lunch stop at Long Island’s Palm Bay Resort.

We’ve been on a lot of tours in Airlie Beach, but this rafting adventure to Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet stands out as our absolute favorite. It combines speed, scenery, and fun in a way that’s hard to top! Riding aboard the semi-rigid inflatable “Thrilla” was an adventure in itself—fast, bouncy, and ridiculously fun, especially with the wind adding to the excitement.

From the moment we checked in at Coral Sea Marina, our guides, Gus and Ben, were exceptionally enthusiastic and clearly passionate about the Whitsundays. Their energy set the tone for the day as we zipped across the water to Whitehaven Beach, where the bright white silica sand looked unreal against the turquoise water.

The short walk to the Hill Inlet lookout revealed one of the most breathtaking views we’ve ever seen. The swirling sands truly look like a painting come to life!

Depending on which route you choose, you’ll either spend more time snorkeling vibrant coral reefs (on the Northern Exposure) or relaxing on the beach (with the Southern Lights). We loved the snorkeling—schools of tropical fish darted beneath us, and we even saw a sea turtle cruise by. Plus, lunch on the beach was casual and delicious, with plenty of time to swim or simply relax in the sun.

Between the stunning scenery, the small group atmosphere, and the thrill of the ride, this experience delivers everything you could want from a Whitsunday adventure. It’s no surprise this tour has THOUSANDS of five-star reviews. It’s a must-do for any visitor!

3. See the Heart Reef from above on a scenic flight

There’s no better way to appreciate the scale and beauty of the Whitsundays than from above. And this scenic flight gives you a full hour of uninterrupted views over the islands, reefs, and swirling sands that make this region so famous.

From your window seat, you’ll take off from Airlie Beach and soar over turquoise lagoons, rainforest islands, and the bright white stretch of Whitehaven Beach before looping around Hill Inlet and the famous Heart Reef. Everyone gets a great view, and the pilot shares interesting facts about the Great Barrier Reef. Plus, the plane is built for sightseeing, with big panoramic windows perfect for photos—so don’t forget your camera!

A real highlight is circling the Heart Reef, a naturally shaped coral formation visible only from above. You’ll also fly over turquoise channels and colorful coral gardens, sometimes spotting turtles, manta rays, or even whales down below.

The flight is smooth and comfortable, though it can get a little warm on sunny days, so light clothing is best. With only a few passengers on board, it feels easygoing and personal, with plenty of space to take in the views.

This scenic flight is one of the most unique ways to see both the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef, offering a perspective you simply can’t get from the water. It’s an easy ride from takeoff to landing—and one you’ll be talking about long after you’re back on the ground!

Trade the beaches for the bush on a crocodile safari, a completely different kind of Whitsunday experience. This full-day eco-tour takes you deep into the region’s wetlands and estuaries, where you’ll spot wildlife that most visitors never get to see—especially the saltwater crocodiles that call the Proserpine River home.

Keep an eye out for other native creatures, too. You could see anything from turtles and water dragons to brightly colored kingfishers darting through the mangroves.

Back on land, you’ll climb aboard an open-air, tractor-pulled wagon for a ride through the surrounding wetlands. This relaxed journey gives you a closer look at the plant life, bird species, and hidden ecosystems that make up Australia’s “wild Whitsunday.”

But it’s not just about sightseeing, you’ll also experience a taste of the outback with freshly brewed billy tea, traditional damper bread, and a hearty Aussie barbecue lunch served in the bush. The damper was warm, soft, and just the right amount of buttery!

Renting a Car, Campervan, or Motorhome in Australia

Bailey stands smiles and leans out of a JUCY campervan while camping in Australia
JUCY is one of our go-to campervan companies (read below for a discount code!)
Star-RV-campervan-in-Australia-Daniel-making-food-2.jpg
Daniel is quite the chef!

With many must-see destinations in Australia outside city limits, one of the best ways to get around is driving yourself!

Australia is a huge country and traveling between cities or getting to some of the most scenic spots requires driving. While public transit is sometimes an option, it often adds a lot of time. Plus, we love the freedom to stop wherever we want and not have to stick to a set schedule.

You have three options: a car, a campervan, or a motorhome. Here’s what you need to know about each and where to get them:

  • Car – A rental car is the most affordable option – especially if you choose a smaller vehicle. It gets you to all of the best destinations with ease. The only downside to a car is that you will need to stay in hotels along the way (no camping).  The easiest place to rent a car in Australia is on DiscoverCars.com where you can compare cars, companies, prices, features, and more very easily.
  • Campervan – A Campervan is a large van with a bed and a small kitchen in the back. It’s what many budget travelers use to get around Australia since it allows you to camp comfortably and for free (most) nights. Campervans are best for couples or solo travelers who are happy to live in a small space. You should also love the outdoors and camping…and be prepared for an adventure of a lifetime! My favorite campervan rental company is JUCY because they have a huge selection of campervans to choose from, plus multiple pick-up/drop-off locations. You can browse JUCY’s campervan selection online here.

EXCLUSIVE DISCOUNT CODE: We’ve managed to snag a discount code for 5% off for our readers if you book your campervan or motorhome through JUCY or Star RV! Simply click here to select your JUCY campervan, or click here to select your Star RV motorhome, and then use the code DTRAVEL25 at checkout to get 5% off – it’s that easy!

AIRALO e-SIM Up To 15% Off With Code “DTRAVEL15”

What’s an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital version of a SIM card. Instead of buying a little plastic chip and swapping it into your phone, you just download it. It connects your phone to a local network in whatever country you’re visiting — no stores, no waiting, and no fiddling with tiny cards.

In simple terms, it’s the easiest way to get data and stay connected while traveling.

We’ve tested a bunch of eSIMs over the years, and after a few frustrating experiences, we’ve found our favorite — Airalo. It’s fast, reliable, and incredibly easy to use. You can set it up in minutes (even my mom managed it solo on her first try!), and the prices are some of the best out there.

💡 Bonus: We’ve got an exclusive 15% discount for our readers. Use the codes:
