A visit to the DMZ is one of the most unique and eye-opening experiences you can have in South Korea. As the border between North and South Korea, it’s a place brimming with history, tension, and chilling stories.

But with so many tour options, how do you choose the right one for you? Having explored the DMZ for ourselves, we’ve put together a guide to the best tours from Seoul, each a bit different. 1. Full-day DMZ tour from Seoul, including Red Suspension Bridge

If you only do one thing in Seoul, it should probably be visiting the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ)! It’s the most heavily guarded border in the world, so you can only visit with a guided tour. We booked this one and learned a ton with the help of our guide, Hana!

The DMZ is about one hour from Seoul, and Hana spent most of the drive giving us the history of the Korean Peninsula and a local’s insight into North Korea. As someone who loves history, I found this to be very insightful. 

Our first stop was the Dora Observatory in the Demilitarized Zone, where we could actually look into North Korea! We weren’t able to take photos, so you’ll just have to go and see it for yourself. We also visited the Peace Park, which is a memorial site to families who have been separated and is dedicated to the reunification of the two Koreas. Both sites were very powerful!

The DMZ has seen some very tense moments between North and South Korea over the years. We were fascinated to visit the Third Tunnel, one of the incursion tunnels built by North Korea as part of an attempted invasion, although they officially claimed they were mining for coal! Walking 73 meters (240 feet) underground to peer into North Korea’s abandoned tunnel was eerily apocalyptic, and honestly, the coolest part of the day. 

Things slowed down when we visited the Red Suspension Bridge on Gamaksan Mountain. This mountain is lush and stunning, and a historical site from the Korean War. Walking along the tree-lined paths and crossing the canyon on the iconic bridge was the perfect way to finish the day. 

It’s important to know that the Third Tunnel and Gamaksan Mountain were quite physical, so if mobility is an issue, you’ll want to sit these parts out.

2. Tour the DMZ and have a Q&A with a North Korean Defector

If you like options when booking a tour, this half-day or full-day DMZ tour is the one to choose! 

It’s structured around seeing the main DMZ sites: the Dora Observatory and the Third Infiltration Tunnel. You’ll also meet a North Korean defector and join a Q&A. In my opinion, this is a valuable part of the tour because it truly humanizes everything you see and hear throughout the day. 

After these main highlights, you can choose how you spend the rest of your day. If you’re short on time, book the half-day tour and head back to Seoul. For those with more time, I’d highly recommend visiting Gamaksan Mountain, home to the iconic Red Suspension Bridge. This area is so beautiful, and we thought it was pretty special to spend an hour walking along the treelined paths. 

Alternatively, you can visit the Majang Reservoir Suspension Bridge! If we make it back to the DMZ, I definitely want to visit this bridge as it looks incredible. Stretching 220 meters (722 feet) across Lake Majang, it’s hard to beat those views. It is also the site of a historic battle during the Korean War, so it’s a memorable stop.

3. Private, half-day DMZ tour led by a former military officer

For an immersive way to experience the DMZ, don’t miss this full-day tour. 

What makes this one stand out is that you’ll get to experience both sides of the historic conflict. This is one of the few tours where you’ll have the chance to speak with a retired military official from the South Korean side and a North Korean defector. 

This gives such a unique insight into the DMZ and the Korean Peninsula as a whole. After visiting for myself, I was surprised to learn how citizens of both sides really want peace and a united Korea, even if they are technically still at war. 

In addition to this unique meet and greet, you’ll experience the iconic DMZ stops that give so much historical context to the region. Visit the Bridge of Freedom and Mangbaedan Altar for a serene experience. Then make your way to the Third Infiltration Tunnel for a bit of a workout and an underground adventure. Finally, peer into North Korea at the Dora Observatory, which was definitely a highlight for me!

There’s so much to understand about the conflict and culture when visiting the DMZ, and this tour does a great job of highlighting both in an easy day trip from Seoul.

4. Take a Seoul City Tour and visit the DMZ with a private guide

If you’re short on time in Seoul, then this private, customizable day tour is the perfect choice. On this tour, you’ll see many of Seoul’s most important highlights and enjoy a comprehensive visit to the DMZ, all in one day. Not bad, huh?

We love that this itinerary is flexible, so you can pick the places you really want to explore and skip the ones that don’t quite fit your travel style. 

Start the day at Gyeongbokgung Palace, the grandest of Seoul’s Five Palaces. It’s super imposing, and you’ll learn all about Korea’s royal history as you explore. Afterward, you can head up to the Bukak Skyway for breathtaking views of the city. This isn’t just a stunning spot – it was also the infiltration point for North Korean spies in 1968!

After a quick lunch, you’ll head to the DMZ. Visit Imjingak Park, enter the Third Infiltration Tunnel, and look out at North Korea from the Dora Observatory. It’s quicker than other tours on the list, but still hits the main highlights of the DMZ!

This is a great option for those with limited time in Seoul but who still want to see it all. And since it’s a private tour, you can move around a little quicker than big group tours. If you only have one day to spend in the city, don’t hesitate to book this tour!

5. Private tour including DMZ, Third Tunnel, and Suspension Bridge

If you want a deeper, more personalized experience of the DMZ, this private tour is the way to go. It’s a fantastic option to dive into the history and culture, ask questions along the way, and get a unique perspective of Korea’s most famous site. 

Since it’s a private tour, you can customize your itinerary. We love that the guides set a loose structure (they are the experts, of course!) but allow you to move at your own pace. And since it’s just your group, you can go to other sites that many large bus tours can’t visit. 

Stop by the most iconic spots, such as Imjingak Park, the Third Infiltration Tunnel, and Dora Observatory. This tour also stops at Mangbaedan, which is an altar for North Korean refugees who left loved ones behind. Not many tours visit this site, so it’s pretty cool that this one does. 

You can also choose between visiting Majang Lake or the Mountain Bridge (aka the Red Suspension Bridge. If you’ve already been on a DMZ tour or are looking to get off the beaten path, Manjang Lake isn’t a typical stop, so it’s another unique experience. Although we’ve visited the Mountain Bridge and can attest that it’s a really great option as well.

While private tours are a bit more expensive, we have found that they are generally more immersive and totally worth it!

Luxury – $$$

Le Méridien Seoul Myeongdong is everything you want from a high-end city stay. This five-star gem puts you steps from Myeongdong’s buzzing streets and just a quick stroll to the closest metro station.

Inside, it’s all polished marble, floor-to-ceiling windows, and plush city-view rooms that feel equal parts cozy and refined. The hotel’s standout perks include a serene indoor pool, a fully equipped gym, and multiple restaurants with seriously impressive breakfast spreads.

Mid-range – $$

Tucked right off the main street, Solaria Nishitetsu is an excellent bang-for-your-buck stay in Myeong-dong. Recently renovated, the room was surprisingly spacious for the area and had all the extras for a comfortable stay. We also really appreciated the self-serve laundry and filtered water stations, which made a longer stay way more convenient.

Budget – $

If you’re looking for a comfortable stay with a fantastic location, we highly recommend Hotel Firststay Myeongdong! We stayed here, and it was convenient to access the train, great restaurants, and the staff was super helpful and friendly.

Rooms here are pretty basic, but spottlessly clean. The beds were extra comfortable, ideal to fall into after a full day out exploring! We loved the rooftop terrace, surrounded by skyscrapers but still a breath of fresh air. You are just about a 5-minute walk to the closest metro station, which is a real win in my book.
