Visiting the DMZ on this tour was an unforgettable and eye-opening experience that we would recommend to anyone. Visiting this historic site, where thousands of prisoners were liberated back in 1953, offered a really powerful glimpse into Korea’s divided past and present.
The DMZ has a unique history, and I was fascinated to visit the Third Tunnel, where many covert military operations took place during the war. It was so interesting to discover the lengths that each side went to infiltrate the other and our guide, Alex, provided excellent commentary throughout.
One of my favorite parts of the tour was visiting the Dora Observatory, which offers views across the DMZ and into North Korea. Now that’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience, right?
We also visited the Imjingak Pyeonghwa-Nuri, which was built to console members of both sides who were unable to return home after the conflicts ended. Here, there are lots of memorials to different military divisions, as well as to commemorate US forces who contributed to the war effort.
If you want to make your experience even more memorable, I’d recommend booking the option that visits the Red Suspension Bridge. It’s a 220-meter-long bridge that offers incredible views of the DMZ. The scenery here is truly stunning, so the bridge is well worth it!

Visiting the DMZ is already a once-in-a-lifetime experience for most people, but this full-day tour takes it to the next level because it includes a rare opportunity to meet a North Korean defector! Hearing firsthand stories about life in the world’s most secretive nation was so powerful, and beyond fascinating.
We started the day by visiting Imjingak Pyeonghwa-Nuri Park, where we checked out the various monuments and memorials, and learned about the history of the conflict between North and South Korea from our guide, Ron Han. We literally cannot say enough good things about him – he was amazing, and made the experience come alive with historical and personal stories.
Then, we went into the DMZ itself, and saw the Bridge of Freedom. It’s so-named because 13,000 prisoners of war crossed this bridge to get to freedom, so it’s a very meaningful landmark.
We also looked into North Korea at the Dora Observatory, and visited the Third Tunnel, which was fascinating to learn about.
However, meeting a North Korean defector was really what set this tour apart. Hearing about their life in North Korea and how they escaped gave us chills, and it was truly an experience that no textbook or documentary could ever replicate. It added so much emotional depth to the tour, and it wasn’t an experience we’ll forget in a hurry.

We booked this tour because it includes a ride on the Paju Imjingak Peace Gondola. So if you want aerial views of the DMZ and the Imjin River below, then this is the option for you! It’s a unique and rare experience that lets you look into North Korea, which is something that most people never get to do!
The DMZ tour itself was very informative, and covered all of the usual highlights of this very unusual destination, including Imjingak Pyeonghwa-Nuri Park, the Bridge of Freedom, and the Dora Observatory.
We also had a great guide, Jenny, who shared a lot of insights into the history and tensions of the Korean peninsula. However, it was the gondola ride that was the cherry on top of this tour.
The views from the gondola are really pretty, so even if you took the history out of it, this would still be a great experience. But when you factor in the significance of the DMZ, it becomes much more meaningful. We were even able to see Camp Greaves, a former military base in the distance, which is where the popular K-drama Descendants of the Sun was filmed.
All in all, this tour delivers a fantastic experience. We think that it’s a great choice for families especially, because kids and teens will love the gondola ride. But honestly, it’s suitable for all ages. Just make sure that you select the gondola option when booking this tour!

If you’re looking for a deeper, more personalized experience of the DMZ, this private tour is most definitely the way to go. We learned more on this tour than any of the others that we’ve tried and tested. So if you’re a history buff, you won’t want to miss this one!
With our guide, Eddie, we covered all of the iconic DMZ sights Imjingak Park, Mangbaedan altar, the Third Infiltration Tunnel, and Dora Observatory. At each stop, he gave us a deeper insight into the complex history of the Korean Peninsula, and the conflicting emotions that come with it. Eddie was an amazing storyteller and his military background meant that he had many anecdotes and reflections to share. We really felt like we were walking through history with him!
After visiting the DMZ, we then opted to visit Majang Lake. We had the choice between this and Mountain Bridge (aka the Red Suspension Bridge), but we had already done the latter, so we went for the lake instead. The bridge extended out over the lake, and it was quieter than the Red Bridge! The scenery was just as stunning, too… if not more so.
If you have the budget for it, I highly recommend booking this private tour of the DMZ. We thought it really outshone the shared tours because it offers a more relaxed pace and more personal attention from the guide. It just makes the entire experience so much more enjoyable – and more educational, too!

Our guide, Jun, let us pick the places that we wanted to explore, so we were able to visit the places we were most interested in, and skip the ones that didn’t appeal to us.
We kicked off the day with a visit to the Gyeongbokgung Palace, which is the grandest of the Five Palaces of Seoul. It was super imposing, and we loved learning about Korea’s royal history from Jun. Then, he drove up the Bukak Skyway for breathtaking views of the city. It’s not just a stunning spot, either – it was also the infiltration point for North Korean spies in 1968!
Lunch was on our own account, but Jun took us to Maple Tree House, and it was one of the best meals that we had in Seoul. But of course, visiting the DMZ was the main event! We got to visit Imjingak Park, head inside the Third Infiltration Tunnel, and stare into North Korea from the Dora Observatory.

Luxury – $$$
Four Seasons Hotel Seoul is a top-tier luxury stay in the heart of the city. It’s just steps from Gwanghwamun Plaza and a short walk to Gyeongbokgung Palace, so it’s ideal if you want to be close to Seoul’s historic center while still enjoying five-star comfort.
Speaking of which, the rooms here come with panoramic floor-to-ceiling views, and I love the on-site swimming pool – especially the fact that they provide goggles for you to use! Oh, and don’t forget about the luxury Korean sauna, a state-of-the-art fitness center, and 3D golf simulator, either – what more could you ever need?

If you’re looking for convenience, the Four Points by Sheraton Josun is my top choice because it’s connected to Seoul Station. You can get anywhere in the city easily, but the hotel is quiet and relaxing despite its central location. The rooms are comfortable and simple, ranging from twin to king rooms.

Budget – $
Seoul N Guesthouse Dongdaemun is a basic and comfortable guest house that is also budget friendly! Located about a 15 minute walk from Dongdaemun Market, it’s super convenient and in a fun area. You can book a private room for about $40 USD a night or a bed in a shared room for about $15 USD a night. The rooms are basic, but clean and the staff are very helpful and friendly.
