Cruising is one of our favorite ways to visit lots of places in a short amount of time, but let’s be honest, your day in port always flies by. Barcelona is a big, busy city with loads to see, so it can be tricky to know what you can realistically fit into one day. That’s exactly why shore excursions are such a good option.

Whether you want to skip the lines at Sagrada Família, eat your way through the city, or explore Barcelona on a Segway, we’ve picked the shore excursions that are actually worth your time in port.

Why We Book Shore Excursions Independently

We almost always book our shore excursions independently. We’ve used Viator many times for cruise ship tours, and we’ve never had an issue! The key is to choose tours specifically designed for cruise passengers, like the ones we’ve listed below. 

These tours are built around cruise schedules, with start times and pick-up locations that align with ship arrivals in port. They’re also typically much more affordable than booking directly through the cruise line, while offering many of the same experiences. Plus, if a ship-sponsored tour is sold out, you can usually find a very similar option independently.

Another big advantage is the experience itself. Independent tours often run in smaller groups, which makes things feel more relaxed and personal. You’re not stuck moving around in a huge crowd and competing to get the best views and shots! 

There’s also less risk involved than you might think. Many tours offer guarantees to get you back to the ship on time, and full refunds if your ship is late or misses the port altogether, so you can enjoy peace of mind while saving money. When booking, you’ll be asked for your cruise details so operators can plan accordingly and make sure you’re back well before all-aboard. If anything feels tight, it’s always worth double-checking with the tour provider before booking.

Best Barcelona Shore Excursions

1. Taste Barcelona’s iconic tapas and wine (best for food and drink lovers)

With so many tapas bars, wine bars, and local restaurants packed into Barcelona’s Old Town, it can be surprisingly difficult to know where to eat, especially if you’re only in port for the day. That’s exactly why we love this 3-hour food tour. It starts in Plaça Sant Jaume before taking you through the Gothic Quarter with a local guide who knows exactly where to stop for some of the city’s best tapas, wine, and authentic local flavors.

After leaving the Gothic Quarter, you’ll make your way towards Passeig de Colom and El Born. There are more tasting stops here, plus a little free time to shop for everything from handmade crafts to stylish fashion and unique souvenirs.

You’ll also pass Palau Dalmases, a historic mansion that’s now a popular flamenco venue (if your ship is staying overnight, we’d definitely come back later for a live show). The tour finishes at the 14th-century Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar, which is well worth stepping inside to see its beautiful stained-glass windows and impressive Gothic interior if you have the time.

For cruise passengers, the 11 am and 12 pm departures are the best fit. Keep in mind that the tour doesn’t include port pickup, but it’s only about a 20-minute taxi ride from the cruise terminal to the meeting point. We love it because at just three hours long, it’s easy to fit into a day in port!

2. See Park Guell and Sagrada Familia with skip-the-line tickets (best for iconic sights)

We love sightseeing, but standing in long lines isn’t our idea of fun. This guided tour is an easy way to see two of Antoni Gaudí’s most famous landmarks without spending half your day waiting to get in. It includes skip-the-line entry to both Park Guell and the Sagrada Família, plus transport between them in a comfortable private bus, which works great since they’re not within walking distance of each other.

The pace is nice and relaxed, with around two hours at each site, so you won’t feel like you’re rushing from one place to the next. There is quite a bit of walking, though, so comfortable shoes are definitely a good idea! Your English-speaking guide covers the history and interesting facts, and because groups are limited to just 16 people, you’ll have a chance to ask questions.

If you’re visiting Barcelona on a cruise, this tour works really well. The 10 am and 11 am departures are timed to fit most cruise schedules, so you can even enjoy breakfast before heading out. The meeting point is outside Park Guell, about a 30-minute taxi ride from the cruise terminal.

3. Explore Barcelona on a Segway (best way to cover more sights)  

If you want a fun and easy way to explore Barcelona, this Segway tour is well worth checking out! It helps you cover a lot of attractions in a short amount of time without much effort on your part (it’s actually easier than riding a bike), and you’ll see far more than you could on foot, which works especially well for cruise passengers.

You’ll start with a short training session, get fitted with a helmet, and then set off from the Arc de Triomf to Parc de la Ciutadella and Barcelona Zoo, with your guide leading the way so you don’t have to worry about navigation. From there, you’ll continue towards the Basílica of Our Lady of Mercy and the Maritime Museum of Barcelona, with a few minutes to explore at each stop.

We like this tour because it’s pretty straightforward once you get to the meeting point. All you have to do is get the hang of the Segway, which is much easier than you might think. Plus, they keep the groups small, and you all get to explore at a nice and easy pace.

Keep in mind that port pickup isn’t included, and riders must be at least 16 years old. Luckily, the meeting point is only about a 20-minute taxi ride from the cruise terminal, and the tour times are designed to fit most cruise ship schedules. You can choose between a 1.5-hour or 2.5-hour tour, depending on how much time you have in port.

4. Discover Barcelona’s best sights on a private tour (best in-depth tour)

If crowded group tours aren’t your thing, this private tour gives you the freedom to experience Barcelona exactly how you want. You decide where to go, how long to stay, and which attractions are worth your time. Your day starts with pickup from the cruise port in a luxury vehicle, setting the tone from the very beginning. 

You’ll get around the city with ease while your guide shares the history behind the sights and answers all your questions. The biggest advantage, though, is the flexibility. Spend extra time somewhere you love, skip anything that doesn’t interest you, or even squeeze in a little shopping along Passeig de Gràcia (yes, including Louis Vuitton if that’s on your list!). 

Keep in mind that admission tickets aren’t included, but skip-the-line tickets for major attractions can be arranged in advance. You can choose from several departure times, including 8:30 am and 9 am, or 2:30 pm if you’re staying overnight or spending an extra day in Barcelona before or after your cruise. You can also cancel up to 24 hours before the tour for a full refund, which is always nice to have for those “just in case” moments!

5. Cover more ground on an e-bike (best relaxed tour) 

Want to explore Barcelona on two wheels? This e-bike tour makes it easy to see a lot of the city in a short amount of time without much effort.

No prior experience is needed! You’ll be shown how to use the e-bike and have some time to get the hang of it (it’s actually easier than riding a regular bike). And don’t worry about navigating busy streets either. Barcelona has bike lanes throughout the city center, so riding between the major sights is surprisingly easy.

The route takes you from Port Vell, the old harbor, before passing the Olympic Stadium, where the 1992 Olympic Games were held, the National Palace, the Gothic Quarter, and all the way up to Montjuïc Castle for amazing views and even better photos. It’s also a small-group tour, so the experience feels much more personal.

It’s worth noting that port pickup isn’t available, so you’ll need to make your own way to the meeting point near Arc de Triomf, about a 20-minute taxi ride from the cruise port. Taxis are the easiest way to get there. You can choose between a private tour with no more than 10 people or a shared small-group tour. The shared tour starts at 10 am, while the private tour offers more flexible departure times between 9 am and 4:15 pm.

6. Cruise around the city on a motorcycle and sidecar experience (best unique experience) 

If you’re looking for a unique way to spend a day in Barcelona, this sidecar tour takes sightseeing to a whole new level! We absolutely love this vehicle because it turns heads everywhere it goes, so don’t be surprised if people wave or stop to take photos of you (it’s not something you see every day!). 

You can get around the city with ease, even through the narrow streets, and because your driver is also your guide, you’ll get live commentary as you pass the sights. Helmets with headsets are also provided, so it’s easy to communicate with your guide throughout the tour. Even better,  children as young as 7 years old can join, making this a great option for families and adventure trips. 

The route includes stops at major attractions like the Sagrada Família, where you’ll have about 30 minutes to admire Gaudí’s masterpiece from the outside. It also includes a walk through the charming medieval district of El Born and lots of other quick stops. 

For cruise passengers, this tour is especially convenient, as the meeting point is right at the cruise port, in front of Hotel Eurostars Grand Marina. The 9:30 am departure also gives you plenty of time to explore the city without worrying about missing your ship. Where to Stay Before or After your Cruise

If your cruise starts and ends in Barcelona, you’ll need somewhere convenient and comfortable to stay. While there are many excellent neighborhoods to stay in Barcelona, we loved staying in Eixample! It’s close to the top city sights, super walkable, charming, and full of character.

Spending a night or two before or after your cruise is always a good idea. It gives you a buffer in case of delays and lets you explore a bit without feeling rushed. You can get to the main cruise port in about 15 minutes, so it’s close enough to be convenient while still enjoying the heart of Barcelona.

Luxury – $$$

The location makes it easy to explore the Gothic Quarter, Passeig de Gràcia, and even the beach—all within walking distance or a short metro ride.

Rooms feature chic, modern décor and thoughtful touches like balconies, plush beds, and sleek bathrooms. Some even come with private terraces for morning coffee or a peaceful evening wind-down.

Budget – $

ibis Styles Barcelona Centre is a solid option for budget-friendly travelers who are looking for a comfortable stay. They offer a good price-to-quality ratio, so you aren’t going to have the party vibe of hostels, but you will be able to save some money on accommodation.

The staff is friendly and helpful, and guests consistently rave about breakfast. The rooms are modern, clean, and centrally located, so you can be out the door and exploring Barcelona in a matter of minutes.
