Savannah may be compact, but where you stay can really shape your experience. In general, we recommend staying in the Historic District, where most of the city’s highlights and attractions are located. This area is actually split into smaller sections, which we’ll talk more about below, including the North, South, and Riverside Districts. Just south of the heart of it all lies Midtown, a quieter, more residential area known for its local hangouts and more affordable hotels.

If you stay in the Historic District, you’ll be able to walk almost everywhere. If you’re outside of the center, the easiest thing to do is rent a car, although the city does have a decent public transport system, which includes some free shuttles. 

• North Historic Savannah – The heart of the Historic District is packed with museums, cobblestone squares, and plenty of charm. We recommend Kimpton Brice Hotel by IHG for a stylish and well-located stay.

• South Historic Savannah – This leafy, upscale area is centered around the beautiful Forsyth Park and features lots of grand homes and boutique hotels. Speaking of which, The DeSoto is our favorite place to stay here!

• Plant Riverside District – We love hanging out in this trendy, upscale neighborhood that stretches and boasts lots of lively bars and restaurants. The Alida, Savannah delivers VIP treatment without the VIP price tag!

• Midtown – This is a quieter, more local neighborhood with historic homes and a great selection of budget-friendly hotels, but it’s still just a 10-minute drive from all of the action. Tru By Hilton offers friendly service and fantastic value for money.

Where to Stay in Savannah

North Historic Savannah

If it’s your first time visiting Savannah, the North Historic District is a great place to stay. This is the city’s most iconic area, filled with cobblestone streets, leafy squares, and that irresistible Southern charm.

You’ll be within walking distance of top sights like River Street, City Market, the Owens-Thomas House, and the famous Savannah squares, as well as tons of top-notch restaurants and cafes. Best of all, it’s easy to explore everything on foot! 

We love staying here because the area is full of character, and you don’t need a car. Just wandering around is a real treat! It’s a very scenic part of the city, and it feels like an easy place to get to know. We’re also very well catered for here as craft beer fans because there are tons of fantastic pubs and breweries dotted around.

However, it does get busy during peak seasons, and you do pay a bit of a premium for all this charm. With that said, you won’t need to spend money on transport, and if you’ve got the budget for it, we think that the convenience and atmosphere are totally worth paying a little more for.

Luxury – $$$

River Street Inn offers classic Southern charm right on the waterfront. It’s set in a restored 1817 cotton warehouse, and it still has original brick walls and hardwood floors, which give the hotel a historic vibe. And in terms of location, this place really couldn’t be better because you’re mere steps away from the river, shops, and some of Savannah’s most popular restaurants.

The rooms are cozy and tastefully decorated with vintage details, and some even have balconies overlooking the river, perfect for relaxing and watching the steamboats float by. Guests can also enjoy complimentary refreshments and snacks every afternoon in the inviting lounge area!

Mid-range – $$

Kimpton Brice Hotel by IHG is our favorite hotel in Savannah! It’s a chic property located just a couple of blocks from River Street, so you get all the perks of a central location but in a quieter setting. 

There’s a leafy courtyard, a small pool, and free bikes to borrow, which are great for exploring the city. Talk about an ideal base! Meanwhile, the on-site restaurant, Pacci, serves up great Southern-inspired Italian food, and there’s also a drink hour in the lobby each evening. 

Expect to pay around $200 to $400 USD per night, depending on the season. Just be warned: you’ll pay a premium if you book last-minute, so be sure to reserve your room in advance!

Budget – $

Olde Harbour Inn is a charming boutique hotel that mixes historic character with great value. Located right on River Street, this hotel is perfect if you want to be near the action without breaking the bank. The building dates back to 1812, and the rooms are actually more like small suites, complete with living areas and kitchenettes.

One of the best perks here is the complimentary wine and cheese served every evening, along with ice cream treats delivered to your room. It’s a fun and friendly place to stay, especially for couples or families who want a little more space. Rates typically range from $200 to $300 USD per night, depending on when you visit.

South Historic Savannah

South Historic Savannah is the leafier, quieter side of the Historic District. It surrounds the iconic Forsyth Park and it’s known for its upscale homes, moss-draped oak trees, and refined atmosphere. If you’re after a peaceful stay that still puts you close to Savannah’s historic attractions, then this is a great pick.

This area is perfect for couples, families, and anyone who prefers a more laid-back vibe. We love coming here to stroll through the park, grab a coffee from a local café, or admire the beautiful Victorian-era architecture.

It’s a nice change of pace from the busier North Historic area, especially during the busy spring season, so it makes a great base for those who want to explore the city on foot without being right in the middle of the more tourist-heavy zones.

While you’ll still be close to plenty of sights, the nightlife and shopping scenes aren’t as lively as in the northern part of the district. But if you’re here to relax and soak in the beauty, South Historic Savannah really does deliver!

Hotel Bardo is one of the most elegant places to stay in Savannah. It’s housed in a beautiful restored historic mansion and has been decorated in a sophisticated art deco style. The pool area is particularly Instagrammable! Another great perk of staying here is that Hotel Bardo is home to one of the city’s top restaurants, Saint Bibiana.

There’s also a super stylish bar for evening drinks and a lush courtyard that’s perfect for a slow morning coffee or reading session. If you’re looking for glamor, this is hands down the best place to stay in Savannah! Expect to pay anywhere from $350 to $700 USD per night for a king room.

Mid-range – $$

The DeSoto is a stylish hotel with a rich history and one of the best locations in South Historic Savannah. It’s just a short stroll from Forsyth Park and the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist, offering beautiful views of the city from many of its upper-floor rooms.

Cambria Hotel is a newer addition to the area and offers a sleek, modern, and affordable stay near Forsyth Park. The rooms are modern and bright, with plenty of space, and the hotel includes a fitness center, a casual restaurant, and a rooftop bar. In short, it’s an amazing value for money!

This spot is a solid choice for travelers who want to stay in the historic district without paying historic district prices. As a very modern property, it doesn’t necessarily have the same charm as the older inns nearby, but you’ll want for nothing when you stay here.

The location is super convenient, and the price point is hard to beat. You’ll usually find rooms here for $150 to $250 USD per night, which is hard to beat in this area!

Plant Riverside District

The Plant Riverside District is Savannah’s trendiest neighborhood. It was once a big power plant, but now the area has completely transformed into a lively hub full of bars, restaurants, and upscale hotels. It runs along the waterfront, so you’ve always got great views, and it really showcases a more contemporary side of Savannah. 

We really enjoy a fun night out in this area and think that it’s perfect for groups of friends and partygoers. With tons of rooftop lounges and live music sessions around, it’s easy to keep the good vibes going well into the night. The whole district feels like one big celebration, especially on weekends when the riverfront fills up with people strolling, sipping drinks, and soaking in the atmosphere!

Plus, when you stay here, you’re still within walking distance of all of the city’s historic squares and downtown landmarks. The North Historic District is just 15 minutes away on foot, so getting around the city is super easy.

We love this area, but do keep in mind that this part of town gets pricey, and the nightlife buzz might not be for everyone. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, this probably isn’t your best bet.

The JW Marriott Savannah Plant Riverside District is the crown jewel of the Plant Riverside District. It’s set inside a former power plant, so it really plays into the area’s industrial-chic aesthetic, and the lobby feels more like an art gallery than a hotel reception!

The hotel offers several restaurants, rooftop bars with sweeping views of the Savannah River, and a luxurious spa. Rooms are modern and spacious, and some even come with river-facing balconies. The whole experience feels like staying in a museum-meets-boutique hotel, and we definitely think that this is one of the most unique stays in the city. 

King rooms here cost between $350 and $650 USD per night, and prices tend to be higher during the spring and fall.

Mid-range – $$

The Alida is a stylish boutique hotel that’s close to everything that the Plant Riverside District has to offer. It’s got a warm, modern feel with several nods to Savannah’s history throughout the property. We also love the fact that the rooms are decorated with custom furniture and local artwork.

We often come to the rooftop bar, The Lost Square, because we can’t get enough of its tasty drinks and fantastic river views. So even if you don’t stay here, it’s worth stopping by! Rooms here start between $250 and $425 USD per night, although pool views and suites cost extra.

Budget – $

Okay, so the Best Western Savannah Historic District is technically outside the main Plant Riverside area, but it’s just a 2-minute walk to the center of all the action. Plus, it offers one of the most affordable stays in the area. Being just a few steps further out can cut your hotel bill in half—and no, I’m not kidding!

This is a clean and simple hotel with all of the basics, such as comfy rooms, a small outdoor pool, and free breakfast each morning. It’s a solid pick for travelers who want to stay close to the action without splurging on luxury, and it has on-site parking, which is rare and super convenient in this part of the city. Queen rooms here typically cost between $150 and $185 USD per night.

Midtown

Midtown Savannah sits just south of the Historic District and offers a more relaxed, residential vibe. It’s a great spot for travelers who want to save money and avoid the crowds, but still be within a 10-minute drive of the main attractions. We think that this area is great for families as it has plenty of parks, lots of relaxed local restaurants, and shopping malls. 

And while this area may not exude the same level of charm as the Historic District, there are still plenty of heritage buildings to admire. Plus, this is where lots of locals live, so you’ll get to see a less touristy side of the city. 

Midtown isn’t as walkable as the Historic District, so we definitely recommend hiring a car if you stay here, as that’s the easiest way to get around. Public transport is available too, and some of it is even free, but it takes longer, and the service is a bit limited outside of peak hours.

Hotels here tend to be more affordable, and there are still plenty of options. It’s a fantastic area to stay in if you’re looking to explore Savannah on a budget!

Luxury – $$$

Home2 Suites is a luxurious all-suite hotel that’s perfect for families and longer stays. Suites come with kitchens, roomy workspaces, and plenty of storage, which makes it a solid option for families and travelers who prefer to self-cater. The rooms are bright and clean, with a more modern and casual feel than you might expect in a traditional Southern city.

While it doesn’t offer luxury in the historic, grand sense, it’s one of the nicer options in Midtown and gives you plenty of space to spread out. Tru By Hilton is a great value pick with modern rooms and a laid-back vibe. It’s designed for travelers who like to get a lot of bang for their buck! It’s not the most unique stay ever, but with a fun lounge space with foosball and board games, and a hearty breakfast included each morning, it makes a solid base in Midtown Savannah. 

King rooms here cost between $165 and $200 USD per night. There are also double queen rooms available for between $190 and $250 USD per night for families and groups, which is a great way to reduce the cost per person.

Best Western Central Inn is one of the most affordable options in Savannah. It’s simple but super clean, and it doesn’t skimp on comfort, either. The beds here are super comfy, and the property is quiet, so you’re pretty much guaranteed a good night’s rest after a day of exploring the city.

Meanwhile, all guests get a complimentary breakfast, which includes continental and cooked options, so you really get a lot for your money here. 

You won’t be within walking distance of the historic sights, but it’s only a short drive into the city center. For the price, we think that staying here offers a great deal! Rooms typically range from $110 to $190 USD per night, depending on the season. You won’t find anything cheaper in Savannah!
