I have to be honest, Lucerne can be very pricey, so I highly recommend booking your accommodation in advance to secure the best prices. In this guide, we’ll break down the four best areas to stay in Lucerne and recommend a few great hotels in each. Let’s find your perfect home base!

Lucerne is one of Switzerland’s priciest destinations… and that’s really saying something! Although it’s very expensive, it’s a small city, which means it’s easy to get from one area to another on foot or by public transport. We’ve always found exploring here to be stress-free! 

You should expect to spend a bit more on accommodation here, but if you choose any of the below areas, you’ll be within easy reach of the top sights. And there’s a neighborhood for every type of traveler here, whether you want to be in the heart of the action or stay somewhere quieter with mountain views.

• Old Town (Altstadt) – This is Lucerne’s most picturesque and historic area, filled with cobbled streets, medieval buildings, and many of the city’s top attractions. We love Altstadt Hotel Krone Luzern for its central location and cozy vibe right in the heart of it all.

• New Town (Neustadt) – This area is just across the Reuss River from Altstadt, and we love it because it blends local life with trendy cafes, bars, and boutiques. Hotel Goldener Stern is a great mid-range option that keeps you close to the action without the Old Town crowds.

• Lake Lucerne Waterfront – A peaceful, upscale area with postcard-worthy lake and mountain views. GLANDON Rooms Haldenhof offers a good balance of comfort and price in this stunning (but spendy) area.

• Horw – A quiet lakeside suburb just a short ride from the center, so it’s ideal if you’re after a more relaxed setting and lower prices. We recommend Seehotel Kastanienbaum for a charming stay with easy access to both the lake and the city that won’t cost the Earth.

Where to Stay in Lucerne

Old Town (Altstadt)

If it’s your first time in Lucerne, we think the Old Town—aka Altstadt—is hands-down the best place to stay! This is the historic heart of the city, where cobblestone streets wind past medieval buildings, colorful frescoes, and charming town squares.

We love wandering around this area and taking in all of the iconic sights, like the Chapel Bridge, the Water Tower, and the Musegg Wall. 

Altstadt is compact and walkable, so everything is just a short stroll away! There are lots of cozy cafés around here where we like to just sit and watch the world go by, as well as great restaurants where you can enjoy hearty Swiss cuisine. If you’re visiting Lucerne because of its storybook charm, we can almost guarantee that you will fall in love with Aldstadt straight away.

Old Town is perfect for a short stay, but since the area is very well-connected by public transport, it’s also easy to explore further afield once you’ve ticked off all of the main attractions. It can get a little busy during the day with tourists on day trips, but in the early morning or evening, it’s truly magical.

Hotel Hofgarten Luzern – $$$

Hotel Hofgarten Luzern is a beautiful boutique hotel tucked into a quiet corner of Old Town, just steps from the lake and Hofkirche. It’s set in a series of elegant townhouses and offers a peaceful, upscale atmosphere that feels worlds away from the crowds, despite being right in the center. What’s not to love?

The rooms are spacious and airy, and the on-site restaurant serves up seasonal Swiss cuisine. Breakfast is included each morning, so you can fill up on fresh bread, pastries, fruit, or even a full cooked breakfast before you head out to explore the city.

Rooms here typically cost around €400 during peak season, but they can range up to €600 per night.

Altstadt Hotel Krone Luzern – $$

Right in the heart of the Old Town, Altstadt Hotel Krone Luzern is a great value option for travelers who want comfort and convenience without splurging. The hotel sits on the charming Weinmarkt square, surrounded by historic buildings and plenty of dining options.

Rooms are bright, clean, and modern, with views of the surrounding rooftops and alleyways. While it’s not flashy, it ticks all the right boxes for a mid-range stay. It’s got a central location, it’s super clean, and the service is very friendly. You’ll be just steps from the Chapel Bridge and a 10-minute walk from the train station if you stay here, so Lucerne (and beyond!) will be your oyster.

Expect to pay around €350 per night for a double or twin room here. Single and quadruple options are also available, so this place is great for both solo travelers and groups.

The Lubo – $

The Lubo is a sleek, minimalist property that’s a hybrid between a hotel and a hostel. It’s ideal for budget travelers who want a clean and comfy stay in a great location, but don’t want to fork out extra for all the trimmings.

This self-check-in stay is in the heart of Old Town and is a very well-thought-out, design-forward property. The rooms are compact but not cramped. Some share bathrooms while others have en-suite, but the entire property is spotless, so we don’t think it matters too much!

There’s also a small communal kitchen and lounge on site where you can relax and prepare your meals to save money. Expect to pay between €250 and €350 per night here, depending on the season.

New Town (Neustadt)

Just across the Reuss River from Old Town, Lucerne’s New Town—aka Neustadt—offers a more modern feel than Altstadt. We find that it’s also a bit more local and less touristy, but you’ll still be super close to all of Lucerne’s main attractions if you stay here.

So, although it’s called “New Town”, Neudstadt still isn’t exactly “new”. A lot of the buildings date back to the 19th century, but the vibe here is definitely more contemporary, and it’s more residential. You’ll see more locals going about their day vs tourists doing their sightseeing, but you can still walk over to the more touristy Altstadt in about 15 minutes. 

This area is great for travelers who want a slightly quieter stay without sacrificing convenience. Since it’s a bit more residential, there’s a strong café and restaurant scene. And seeing as Neustadt is a more residential area, it’s the perfect place to try authentic Swiss comfort food—yum! 

You’ll also find lots of boutiques, bakeries, and bars in the area, and the train station is just a short walk away, making it super easy to get in and out of town. All in all, we think that Neustadt is a solid pick for couples, families, or digital nomads looking for a more laid-back but central base.

AMERON Luzern Hotel Flora – $$$

AMERON Luzern Hotel Flora is a sleek and modern hotel located just a few minutes’ walk from the train station and the Chapel Bridge. We think it’s ideal for travelers who want comfort and convenience with a side of style.

The rooms here are stylishly decorated with a boutique feel. The decor is all about warm wood accents, pops of color, and cozy lighting. We also like the on-site restaurant, which serves a mix of Mediterranean and Swiss dishes, and the breakfast buffet is hard to resist! Rooms here cost anywhere between €350 and €650 per night.

Hotel Goldener Stern – $$

Hotel Goldener Stern  is a friendly, mid-range option located right in the heart of Neustadt. It’s housed in a historic building but has been updated with simple and modern interiors that will make you feel right at home!

This place has a great location just a short walk from the main shopping streets, restaurants, and the train station. It’s a great choice if you want a no-fuss, reliable place to stay that still has personality and charm.

Expect to pay between €250 and €300 per night for a standard double room, although prices tend to skyrocket if you book at the last minute.

ibis budget Hotel Luzern City – $

For travelers watching their wallets, the ibis budget Hotel Luzern City is one of the most affordable options in town. It’s located in the southern part of Neustadt, just a 10-15 minute walk from the train station and Old Town.

The rooms are compact and very basic, but they’re clean and functional, so it’s ideal if you just need a place to crash after a day of exploring. There’s also a 24-hour front desk, bike rentals, and paid parking available on-site. It’s a practice choice for anyone who wants a clean and comfortable stay on a budget.

Double and triple rooms tend to cost between €200 and €250 per night, which is very low by Lucerne’s standards.

Lake Lucerne Waterfront

We just love the Lake Lucerne Waterfront area because it’s such a scenic and peaceful part of the city to stay in. So if you’re dreaming of a tranquil atmosphere and lakefront views, the waterfront is just the ticket!

The waterfront is a little quieter than the city center, but still just a short stroll from all the main attractions, so you don’t have to trade off convenience for serenity here! And if you enjoy walking, boat cruises, and sipping coffee as you watch the world go by, you’ll find plenty to do here. 

We think that this part of Lucerne is ideal for couples, honeymooners, or anyone who wants to soak in the natural beauty of the lake and the surrounding Alps. We love morning jogs and sunset strolls along the lakeside promenade, and the views across the water are nothing short of magical. 

Keep in mind that this is Lucerne’s most luxurious area, so prices are on the higher side. Still, that means plenty of nice accommodation to choose from! So if you’re more concerned about plush hotels and picture-perfect views than saving money, this is the place for you.

Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern – $$$

Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern is a five-star hotel with serious historic charm, set right on the lakefront with panoramic views of the water and mountains. This family-run hotel has hosted everyone from Mark Twain to Richard Wagner, so it truly does offer a VIP stay! 

Each room is spacious and individually styled, but a common thread of elegance and classic luxury runs throughout the property. There’s also a wellness area, several excellent on-site restaurants, and a beautiful terrace for outdoor dining in warmer months. The location is ideal because it’s super quiet but only a short walk to Old Town and the train station.

Double rooms with city views cost between €670 and €900 per night, but expect to pay more for lake views or suites.

GLANDON Rooms Haldenhof – $$

GLANDON Rooms Haldenhof is a clean and modern mid-range option along the eastern end of the lake promenade. While it’s not a full-service hotel (there’s no on-site restaurant or daily housekeeping), it’s a great way to save a little more money while enjoying a spacious and super stylish stay. 

Rooms are simple but stylish, with lake or garden views depending on your selection. It’s a self-check-in property, which makes it ideal for independent travelers or longer stays. Plus, you’re still within walking distance of the waterfront and the rest of the city. What’s not to love? Junior suites cost between €325 and €410 per night.

Horw

Horw is a peaceful suburb just southwest of Lucerne, tucked between the lake and the base of Mount Pilatus. It’s perfect for travelers who want to escape the busy tourist crowds and enjoy a slower pace, perhaps for a longer stay. 

If you stay in Horw, you’re still close enough to the city center to explore easily. It takes about 10–15 minutes to drive to Altstadt or Neustadt, depending on traffic, or a little over 20 minutes by bus. Buses run every few minutes!

The best thing about staying in Horw is the fact that it’s surrounded by natural beauty. It boasts great access to hiking and cycling trails, lakeside beaches, and panoramic viewpoints. It’s especially appealing for families, nature lovers, or anyone traveling by car who wants more space and less noise.

You’ll also find that accommodations here are generally better value than in central Lucerne, though there’s not a huge amount of nightlife or dining right outside your door. Still, if you don’t mind that trade-off, it’s a good choice.

Seehotel Sternen – $$
