Grindelwald is arguably the most spectacular resort village in Switzerland, with visitors coming from far and wide to ski world-class slopes, ride the famous Jungfraujoch railway, and take in the postcard-perfect alpine scenery.  

If you’ve never been to Grindelwald before, you’ll soon realize that there’s no shortage of chalets and mountain retreats to call home during your trip. So to help you narrow down your options, we’ve put together this guide to the three best areas to stay, plus our favorite hotels in each!

Overview of the Best Areas to Stay in Grindelwald

When you picture Switzerland, chances are you picture something that looks a lot like Grindelwald. It’s got snow-capped peaks, flower-filled meadows, and dozens of traditional Swiss chalets throughout the village and the surrounding hills. It really does feel like a fairytale! 

In terms of accommodation, if it’s your first time visiting Grindelwald, the Village Center is usually the best place to stay. This is the heart of Grindelwald, where you’ll find the main train station, plenty of restaurants and shops, and that classic Swiss mountain village atmosphere that makes the resort so charming. 

If quick access to the mountains is your top priority, you’ll want to consider Western Grindelwald around Grindelwald Terminal and Grund. This area is home to the Eiger Express gondola and excellent transport connections, making it particularly popular with skiers, families, and anyone planning lots of excursions in the Jungfrau Region.

And if you’re chasing the best views, it’s worth considering Greater Grindelwald, which includes the upper village and hillside chalet areas. Accommodation here tends to be quieter and more secluded, with uninterrupted views of the Eiger and surrounding peaks. 

It’s also worth keeping in mind that while Grindelwald is walkable, it’s spread out along the valley and much hillier than you might expect. Thankfully, the local bus network is reliable, and taxis are readily available if you’re traveling without a car.

Before we get further into the details, here’s a quick overview of the three best areas to stay in Grindelwald:

• Village Center – Best for first-time visitors – This is the heart of Grindelwald, offering a classic Alpine village feel with picture-perfect chalets, cafes, and shops. Our top pick here is Hotel Spinne Grindelwald; it has an incredible heated infinity pool offering direct views of the Eiger North Face.

• Western Grindelwald (Terminal/Grund) – Best for skiers & families – This area puts you just steps away from the major lift connections like the Eiger Express, making mountain access super easy. Our favorite place to stay here is Eiger Lodge Chic, a modern, stylish hotel just a 5-minute walk from the Grindelwald Terminal.

• Greater Grindelwald (Upper village) – Best for scenery & hikes – This hillside area offers panoramic views and a peaceful, rural atmosphere away from the busier village center. Our top pick here is Hotel Wetterhorn, a cozy, more traditional stay near the Upper Grindelwald Glacier.

Village Center

BEST FOR FIRST-TIME VISITORS

Pros

• Highly walkable with excellent access to restaurants, cafes, and local shops
• The most convenient spot for catching trains from the main station
• Offers that classic Swiss Alpine village atmosphere

Cons

• Can be busy and crowded, especially during peak summer and winter seasons
• You will need to walk or take a bus to reach the major ski lifts like the Eiger Express

If you’ve never been to Grindelwald before, the Village Center is probably the easiest and most convenient place to stay.

This is where you’ll find traditional wooden chalets, the old church, and plenty of cafes, restaurants, and shops clustered around Dorfstrasse. Grindelwald’s main train station is also located here, making it incredibly easy to explore the wider Jungfrau Region or set off on day trips without needing a car.

What we love most about the Village Center is that everything you need is right at your doorstep. You can spend the morning browsing the local shops, stop for a coffee or pastry at a bakery, and finish the day with fondue at a cozy restaurant, all without having to plan around buses or taxis.

The Village Center also has the liveliest atmosphere in Grindelwald, especially during the ski season and summer hiking months. Of course, that means it can feel a little busy at peak times, and you won’t be directly beside major lifts like the Eiger Express. However, the terminal is only around 15 to 20 minutes away on foot, and regular buses and trains make the journey easy.

Basically, if you’re looking for a central, lively base with excellent transport connections and plenty of places to eat and drink nearby, the Village Center is definitely worth considering! 

Eiger Mountain & Soul Resort – $$$

For our first hotel in the Village Center, we cannot recommend Eiger Mountain & Soul Resort enough! 

This is a super-stylish 4-star resort with spacious, beautifully designed rooms with incredible mountain views. What we love most about this hotel, though, is the wellness facilities, which include a private spa, a fitness area, and a few relaxing saunas that will definitely come in handy after a day of skiing or hiking! 

The location also couldn’t be more perfect, as you’re just a 5-minute walk from Grindelwald’s main train station and only steps away from the village’s shops and restaurants. 

In terms of pricing, you can expect rates to start from around €250 per night and climb to €500+ per night, depending on the room type and season.

Another 4-star option we love is Bergwelt Grindelwald – Alpine Design Resort. This hotel also has excellent spa facilities, and best of all, it’s just a 2-minute walk to the Firstbahn cable car. 

Sunstar Hotel & SPA Grindelwald is also worth checking out! It’s located directly opposite the Firstbahn cable car and has the coziest bar and restaurant! 

Hotel Spinne Grindelwald – $$

For our mid-range pick, we absolutely adore Hotel Spinne Grindelwald. This is a family-run hotel that feels both modern and traditional. 

There are two restaurants onsite: one leans more toward Italian cuisine, while the other serves more traditional local dishes. However, the real star of the show here is the heated infinity outdoor pool, which offers stunning, unobstructed views of the Eiger. 

Like other central hotels, you’re within walking distance of the main train station, and in terms of pricing, you can expect rooms to fall between €200 and €450+ per night. 

If you’d like another option, the Derby Swiss Quality Hotel Grindelwald is also worth a look! This is a more traditional-style hotel with an excellent restaurant, and it’s literally right next to the main train station. 

Hotel Central Wolter Grindelwald is another fantastic mid-range option in the Village Center. We love this hotel because most rooms have a balcony, and it’s also just a 1-minute walk from the train station. 

Hotel Tschuggen – $

For our budget-friendly pick, you really can’t go wrong with Hotel Tschuggen. This hotel has such a warm, welcoming atmosphere and offers some seriously cozy rooms just a 5-minute walk from Grindelwald’s main train station. 

It’s also worth noting that every guest of the hotel receives a 50% discount on admission to Grindelwald’s sports center, where you’ll have access to the indoor swimming pool and ice rink, which is honestly such a great perk! 

Price-wise, you can expect rates starting at around €160 per night, depending on the room type and season.

If Hotel Tschuggen is fully booked, Hotel Bellevue-Pinte is a fantastic alternative. This is actually the oldest hotel in Grindelwald, and it’s just a 5-minute walk from the Firstbahn cable car. 

Alpenhof Grindelwald hotel is another budget-friendly option we love right in the Village Center. The rooms here are basic but so cute, and the breakfast is everything you’d ever want from a traditional Swiss chalet. 

Western Grindelwald (Terminal/Grund)

BEST FOR SKIERS & FAMILIES

Pros

• Unbeatable access to the Eiger Express and easy connections to the Firstbahn gondola
• Modern hotels, lodges, and apartments with excellent ski facilities
• Convenient for drivers thanks to the large car park at Grindelwald Terminal

Cons

• Lacks some of the traditional Swiss village charm found in the center
• You’ll need to walk, take a bus, or catch the train to reach many restaurants and bars

If your main reason for visiting Grindelwald is to spend as much time as possible in the mountains, Western Grindelwald is the area for you! 

Western Grindelwald is centered around Grindelwald Terminal and the Eiger Express, so you’ll have easy access to the Eiger Glacier, Jungfraujoch, and some of the area’s best skiing and hiking spots. Because everything is so close, that means you won’t have to drag your skis, boots, or hiking gear through town when heading up to the Eiger Glacier or Männlichen. 

In our experience, the atmosphere here is noticeably more modern and practical than the Village Center. You’ll find contemporary hotels, apartment-style accommodation, and excellent transport connections, but fewer traditional chalets and restaurants. That said, the center is only around 15 minutes away on foot or a quick bus ride, so it’s still easy enough to pop into town when you want. 

Because Western Grindelwald is so convenient, it’s especially popular with families and groups, and we always recommend it to anyone planning on spending a lot of time hiking and skiing on their trip. 

Boutique Hotel Glacier – $$$

If you’re really looking to treat yourself on your trip, Boutique Hotel Glacier is a fabulous option in Western Grindelwald. 

This hotel really does have it all, including some seriously comfy rooms, an award-winning restaurant and terrace, and a shuttle bus service to Grindelwald Train Station and Grindelwald Terminal (such a lifesaver in the winter!). Some rooms even have a private hot tub, which is just so luxurious.  

For rates, you can expect rooms to fall between €365 per night and climb to €1,290+ per night, depending on the room type and season. 

Another fabulous option is Belvedere Swiss Quality Hotel Grindelwald. This hotel has a Michelin-starred restaurant onsite (such a treat!), and it’s just one train stop away from the Grindelwald Terminal. 

Eiger Lodge Chic – $$

For something a bit more budget-friendly, check out the Eiger Lodge Chic. This modern hotel offers fantastic value for money, with clean, stylish rooms and a super relaxed atmosphere. What we love most about this hotel, though, is the location. You’re just a 5-minute walk from Grindelwald Terminal, so getting up into the mountains couldn’t be easier!

Breakfast here is another big plus, with a surprisingly good selection of vegetarian and vegan options. At around €160 to €320+ per night, this really is one of the best-value stays in the area and our top choice for Western Grindelwald. 

Another mid-range hotel we love in Western Grindelwald is Hotel Cabana Grindelwald. This cozy, family-friendly hotel is nestled in the hills, and as a guest, you’ll enjoy free admission to the indoor pool and skating rink at Grindelwald’s local sports center. 

Jungfrau Lodge, Swiss Mountain Hotel is also a brilliant mid-range option. We love this hotel because it’s been family-run for over 100 years, and the breakfast buffet is simply perfection! 

Greater Grindelwald

BEST FOR SCENERY & HIKES

Pros

• Incredible, uninterrupted panoramic views of the Eiger and surrounding peaks
• A peaceful, rural atmosphere away from the crowds of the village center
• Easy access to hiking trails and mountain walks

Cons

• Reaching the center often requires uphill walks, buses, or taxis
• Narrow hillside lanes can be icy and challenging to navigate in winter

If you’re dreaming of a quiet Swiss mountain escape, you will definitely fall in love with Greater Grindelwald. 

This area covers the hillsides above the village, where traditional chalets and cozy guesthouses enjoy some of the most spectacular, uninterrupted views of the Eiger and the Bernese Alps.

The best part about staying here, hands down, is the sense of peace and seclusion. Instead of being surrounded by restaurants, shops, and busy streets, you’ll be immersed in nature. A perfect day here might look something like waking up to the sound of cowbells, enjoying your morning coffee overlooking the mountains, and stepping straight onto a hiking trail from your front door for a midday hike (honestly, can you think of anything better?). 

Of course, that tranquility comes with a few trade-offs. Accommodation is a lot more spread out, and getting into the Village Center often requires a bus, taxi, or a fairly steep walk. During winter, some of the narrower hillside roads and footpaths can also be very icy, so you’ll definitely want to factor that into your plans, especially if you’re visiting between November and March. 

Still, for the scenery, the peace and quiet, and that classic Swiss Alps experience, staying in Greater Grindelwald is worth the effort! 

Boutique Hotel Panorama Grindelwald – $$$

For our first hotel pick in Greater Grindelwald, it’s gotta be Boutique Hotel Panorama Grindelwald, a peaceful, adults-only stay with a gorgeous terrace perfect for relaxing on days when you’re not feeling so adventurous! 

There’s plenty to love about this hotel, with its stunning location and modern, stylish rooms. However, breakfast really does deserve a special mention here, as both continental and American options are available, which we always appreciate and isn’t always guaranteed at other hotels in the area. 

In terms of location, you’re about a 25-ish-minute uphill walk from the Village Center, which isn’t too bad if you enjoy the outdoors. For pricing, you can expect rates between €420 and €600+ per night; definitely a splurge, but well worth it for the views and peaceful atmosphere! 

If Boutique Hotel Panorama is all booked up on your preferred dates, Alpinhotel Bort Grindelwald is also worth a look! It’s right next to the middle station of the Grindelwald-First gondola lift, and in winter, it’s only accessible via cable car (so cool!). 

Grindellodge Grindelwald is another excellent backup. We love this hotel because it’s home to Grindelwald’s first Japanese restaurant, and it’s only about a 20-minute walk to the Grindelwald Firstbahn. 

Hotel Wetterhorn – $$

Next up for Greater Grindelwald is Hotel Wetterhorn, a traditional mountain hotel offering cozy rooms, a fabulous French restaurant, and hiking trails in literally every direction! 

We always recommend this hotel because the views are simply incredible, and it’s a bit off the beaten path. It’s very quiet and makes for a wonderfully relaxing mountain retreat (though you’ll probably be spending most of your time out and about exploring). It’s also very reasonably priced, with rates typically ranging from €195 to €380+ per night, depending on the season.

Another lovely mid-range option in Greater Grindelwald is Hotel Blümlisalp. We especially recommend this hotel if you’re planning on doing a lot of skiing, as the ski bus stops right outside the front door!

• Take the gondola up to Mount First – There really is no better way to appreciate the incredible scale of the Bernese Oberland than from the top of Mount First. This scenic Mount First gondola ride whisks you effortlessly from the village up to the summit, where you’ll be treated to jaw-dropping views in every direction.

• Go on a picture-perfect picnic – Soak up the beauty of the Swiss Alps with this romantic picnic experience overlooking the mountains. You’ll have a beautifully curated setup complete with blankets and plenty of local treats, plus a local guide to lead you to the perfect picnic spot. 

• Test your nerves on an epic canyon swing – If you consider yourself a thrill-seeker, this canyon swing experience is guaranteed to get your heart racing! You’ll leap 90 meters (295 feet) into Glacier Canyon, reaching speeds of up to 120 km/h (75 mph) as you swing between the gorge walls! It’s an unforgettable rush and one of the most exciting adventures you can have in the Swiss Alps!
