Cappadocia is famous for its cave hotels, hot air balloons, fairy chimneys, and otherworldly valleys, but what a lot of people don’t realize is that it’s not just one single town. It’s actually a whole region, with a handful of popular towns that most visitors use as a base.

In this guide, we’re focusing on four of the best areas to stay in Cappadocia: Göreme, Uçhisar, Ürgüp, and Ortahisar. Each one has its own feel, and we’ll help you decide which one suits you best, plus we’ve got hotel picks for every budget.

Overview of the Best Areas to Stay in Cappadocia

Cappadocia is a region rather than a single town, so choosing where to stay can feel a little confusing at first. The good news is that most visitors base themselves in a handful of towns close to the main sights, tours, viewpoints, restaurants, and balloon take-off areas.

For this guide, we’re focusing on Göreme, Uçhisar, Ürgüp, and Ortahisar. These are four of the most popular places to stay in Cappadocia, and they all make it easy to explore the region without needing a rental car. Taxis, local buses, hotel transfers, and organized tours can help you get around, and many of the top activities will pick you up directly from your hotel.

One thing to know is that while Cappadocia is famous for cave hotels, not every hotel here is actually a cave hotel. You’ll find everything from traditional stone guesthouses to boutique hotels and spa stays, so there’s more variety than you might expect.

• Göreme – Best for first-time visitors – Göreme is the most convenient base in Cappadocia, with lots of cave hotels and everything you need right on your doorstep! Anatolian Houses Cave Hotel & SPA is a great choice here, with cave-style rooms, a spa, and a central location that makes sightseeing easy peasy!

• Uçhisar – Best for luxury travelers and families – Uçhisar is a quieter base known for its incredible views and easy access to Uçhisar Castle. Dream of Cappadocia is a lovely boutique option with an amazing rooftop to watch all of the hot air balloons floating through the sky.

• Ürgüp – Best for foodies and relaxation – Ürgüp has a more local feel with lots of great restaurants and wineries to check out. Taru Cave Suites is a standout hotel built into an ancient cave, with fantastic amenities and a very regal feel.

• Ortahisar – Best for budget travelers – Ortahisar is a quieter town with better-value hotels, a historic castle, and easy access to Cappadocia’s main sights. Exedra Cappadocia offers amazing value for money with luxurious rooms and traditional stone architecture, not to mention a beautiful outdoor pool! 

Where to Stay in Cappadocia

Göreme 

BEST FOR FIRST-TIME VISITORS

Pros 

• Most attractions are within easy reach

• It can get crowded in peak season 
• Prices tend to be higher

Göreme is the heart of Cappadocia’s tourism scene, which makes it the liveliest and most convenient place to stay. It also has the biggest concentration of cave hotels, easy access to major sights and trailheads, and some of the best sunrise balloon views right from town, which is why it usually makes the easiest all-around base for a first trip. We chose it because we wanted to see everything without having to rent a car.

There’s plenty to explore here, but one of the highlights is the Göreme Open-Air Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage site and former Byzantine monastic settlement carved into the rock. It’s worth exploring the churches too, just make sure to check opening hours. We’d also recommend visiting the Dark Church, where, thanks to the lack of windows, you can still see beautifully preserved frescoes.

One of the best things to do, however, is hiking to Love Valley and Sunset Point for surreal views. Göreme is also a great place to try Turkish cuisine and local wine, and to catch a Dervish ceremony or some belly dancing in the evening. Overall, it’s the ideal starting point for exploring Cappadocia.

Aza Cave Cappadocia – $$$ 

Aza Cave Cappadocia is an adults-only hotel and a true cave stay! It blends natural rock interiors (there’s a fairy chimney on-site) with contemporary touches, so you get that traditional vibe without missing out on comfort. The rooms are spacious and combine classic cave elements, like stone walls and dim lighting, with modern touches like flat-screen TVs. Now that’s what I call the best of both worlds! 

The restaurant here is also one of the few places in town where you can eat Asian fusion and fresh Japanese dishes – and trust me, sushi and noodles are a welcome change after a few days of local food. In the summer months, the pool area becomes the perfect place to cool down.

The highlight, however, is the service, with staff constantly praised for going above and beyond to keep you happy. Prices start at €300 per night during the summer months, depending on room type and travel dates.

Another great option in Göreme is Kelebek Cave Hotel, which sits right in the heart of the village and has that classic Cappadocia cave hotel feel. It also has a Turkish bath, outdoor pool, and beautiful terraces, so it’s a lovely choice if you want somewhere atmospheric but still very central.

Carus Cappadocia is another great option in Göreme, especially if you want something polished and central, with the open-air museum close by and lots of tours, hikes, and restaurants within easy reach. It has an indoor pool, spa, sauna, garden, and an on-site restaurant, so you’ve got everything you could want right on site!

Anatolian Houses Cave Hotel & SPA – $$ 

Anatolian Houses Cave Hotel & SPA is our favorite mid-range spot and the place we chose for our stay. It offers so much that it’s hard to capture in a few words, and it doesn’t feel like a mid-budget place at all. For starters, there are artifacts everywhere, so if you’re into art and history like we are, you’ll keep noticing something new (but old), no matter where you look.

There are two pools, one outdoor and one indoor, designed to resemble ancient Roman baths, and it’s a great way to cool down after a long day out. In the garden, there’s even a free wine tap, which we definitely made good use of.

Keep in mind that there are quite a few stairs and uneven surfaces, so it may not be ideal for those with mobility difficulties. Prices typically start around €120 per night but can climb quickly during peak dates.

If Anatolian Houses Cave Hotel & Spa is all booked up, then Arif Cave Hotel is another great option in Göreme with those classic Cappadocia views. It sits up above the village and has a panoramic terrace, so it’s a lovely choice if you’re hoping to watch the balloons at sunrise!

Mai Cappadocia Hotel is also worth checking out if you want a newer boutique-style stay in Göreme. It has a cozy but elegant feel and a super central location, plus both the terrace and the breakfast room are ideal for watching the balloons go by.

Heybe Hotel & Spa – $ 

Heybe Hotel & Spa is a great budget-friendly stay right in the center of Göreme. You still get all of the hotel perks, like an indoor pool and a spa, as well as gorgeous Turkish decor. It doesn’t quite have the wow factor of the cave hotels, but this is still a pretty plush stay! 

Breakfast is served in the top-floor restaurant, with homemade breads, pastries, marmalade, and coffee alongside village views. So if you want a practical Göreme base with a few extra treats, Heybe Hotel & Spa is a really solid choice. Rooms here start at around €100 per night, which is super competitive for Cappadocia.

If Heybe Hotel is full, Yusuf Bey House is another good budget-friendly option in Göreme. It has a friendly guesthouse feel, a terrace breakfast area, and a convenient location close to the main streets and bus station.

Despite its name, Shoestring Cave House is no slouch, and it’s another great spot for a cave-style stay without blowing the budget. It has an outdoor pool and a terrace with amazing sunrise and sunset views, and some rooms come with spa baths or jacuzzis.

Uçhisar 

BEST FOR LUXURY TRAVELERS & FAMILIES

Pros

• Scenic views 
• More authentic and laid-back 
• Family-friendly attractions and accommodations 

Cons 

• Higher-priced cave hotels
• Limited nightlife
• You might need a car to explore the entire area 

Uçhisar sits higher up and has a more polished feel than the other bases, so it tends to attract travelers who come for the scenery and a quieter, more exclusive atmosphere rather than being in the middle of the action.

At the same time, it works well for families, with extra space to move around and fewer crowds than the main town. Göreme is only about 4 km (2.5 miles) away, so getting into town is quick if you want to change things up.

This area is known for some of the best panoramic views over Göreme and Pigeon Valley, so if you’re into photos, you’ll have plenty to work with. The fairy chimneys are right on your doorstep, and Uçhisar Castle is hard to miss, a citadel carved into volcanic rock that was once used to defend Cappadocia from invaders.

All in all, we think Uçhisar is a great choice for families and anyone looking for more space and a slightly more upscale stay.

Millstone Cave Suites Hotel – $$$

Millstone Cave Suites Hotel is a gorgeous luxury option in Uçhisar, and it’s perfect if you want those classic Cappadocia views without staying right in the middle of busy Göreme! It’s close to Uçhisar Castle and sits in a really scenic spot, so you get beautiful views over the valley and surrounding landscape.

The hotel has a polished cave-hotel feel, with spacious rooms, a sunny terrace, and a very sophisticated feel. We also love the big standalone bathtubs, and some of the more luxurious suites even come with their own private pools! The complimentary breakfast is cooked to order, and there’s also a romantic restaurant with excellent views if you want to stay in for dinner.

Rooms here start at around €300 per night, although the more deluxe options can climb up to €700+ during the busier months. It’s definitely a treat-yourself stay, but the setting makes it feel worth it.

If Millstone Cave Suites Hotel is all booked up, Karlık Cave Suite is another beautiful Uçhisar option if you want something romantic and high-end. Some suites come with spa-style extras like hot tubs, private pools, or saunas, so it’s a great choice if you really want your hotel to feel like part of your Cappadocia experience.

Simera in Cappadocia is also worth checking out if you prefer a smaller boutique stay. It has just 9 rooms, including jacuzzi suites and a hot tub suite with balloon views, so it feels intimate, and it definitely has that special Cappadocia magic!

Dream of Cappadocia – $$ 

Dream of Cappadocia is a gorgeous but well-priced hotel in an awesome location, with attractions like Göreme Open-Air Museum and Pigeon Valley within easy reach. Staying here means you’ll be perfectly positioned to enjoy lots of tours and balloon rides, and then after a day out exploring, you get to come back to spacious and authentic cave suites.

This hotel feels super inviting, with vibrant Turkish decor and lots of modern comforts, like heated floors, which are a dream come true in the winter months. We also love the fact that the hotel offers a home-style local breakfast and free parking, or an airport shuttle if you need one.

Prices range from around €130 to €180 per night, with breakfast included. 

If Dream of Cappadocia is unavailable, Harem Suites Cappadocia is another lovely option in Uçhisar, especially if you want to stay close to Uçhisar Castle and Göreme National Park. The suites have a romantic boutique feel, and some come with extras like hot tubs, so it’s a great choice if you want somewhere that feels a little special.

Takaev Cave House is also worth checking out if you want a smaller, more traditional stay in Uçhisar. It’s set below Uçhisar Castle on the slopes of Pigeon Valley, with cave-style rooms, a terrace, and a cozy guesthouse feel.

Moonlight of Cappadocia – $ 

Moonlight of Cappadocia is a lovely budget-friendly option in Uçhisar, especially if you want somewhere peaceful but still close to the main sights. It’s a good choice if you like the idea of staying somewhere quieter than Göreme, while still being within easy reach of Uçhisar Castle, tour pick-ups, and all the best viewpoints.

The hotel has a simple, comfortable feel, with a terrace, garden, and views over the surrounding Cappadocia landscape. There’s even a fire pit so you can stay warm while watching the balloons at sunset during the cooler months.

This is such a lovely stay, and although it’s not as flashy as some of the cave hotels, it’s still a really pleasant place to stay with great views and lots of character. Rooms here start at around €110 per night, including an amazing breakfast spread each morning.

Drala Inn Cappadocia is another great option in Uçhisar if you want a budget-friendly stay with amazing views. It’s atmospheric, with distinctive Turkish decor and a great location close to Uçhisar Castle, not to mention a fantastic terrace and yoga classes.

Eyes Of Cappadocia Cave Hotel is also worth checking out if you want more of a classic cave-hotel feel in Uçhisar. It’s close to Uçhisar Castle and has a terrace with beautiful views toward Pigeon Valley, so it’s a very special stay, just without the luxury price tag!

Ürgüp 

BEST FOR FOODIES & RELAXATION

Pros 

• Wide range of accommodation options
• Quieter and more relaxed than Göreme
• Good mix of dining and nightlife

Cons

• May feel too quiet for some
• Less suited for families

Ürgüp feels more like a proper town than the other bases and has that local, lived-in feel alongside smarter dining, wine culture, and a broader mix of boutique and upscale stays. Compared with Göreme and Uçhisar, it is less about iconic balloon-view terraces and dramatic scenery right outside your door, and more about comfort, restaurants, and a thriving social scene.

This means evenings here are all about long dinners and a glass of local wine rather than rushing back for sunrise views. At the same time, this part of Cappadocia is a great starting point for many tours, but jeep and ATV safaris are the highlight (we recommend the sunset ones if you don’t like waking up early).

Staying in Ürgüp also puts you close to spots like the Art and History Museum and the Hammam Turkish Bath. If you need a break from cave dwellings and underground cities, both are in the modern downtown area. You’ll also come across pottery workshops and handmade carpet shops, which, trust us, are a nice change from the usual sights.

That said, we think Ürgüp is best for travelers looking for an authentic, laid-back vibe with a polished touch, without being too far from Göreme. 

Kayata Cave Suites Special Class – $$$ 

Right in the middle of Ürgüp’s rocky terrain, Kayata Cave Suites delivers that classic cave experience that people come to Cappadocia for! The hotel is just a short walk from Nikolos Monastery and Ürgüp Museum, so the location couldn’t be better, either.

And believe me when I say that this property is absolutely gorgeous – it looks like an ancient royal dynasty should live here! There’s also a traditional sun terrace on site, plus an outdoor fireplace for colder fall nights.

Some suites also come with private hot tubs, which are great if you’re here on a romantic trip. In fact, we think this would be the ideal place to stay on your honeymoon. Rooms typically start from around €300 per night, including an amazing daily breakfast buffet!

If Kataya Cave Suites is sold out for your dates, Kayakapi Premium Caves Cappadocia is another gorgeous luxury option in Ürgüp, especially if you want a proper treat-yourself cave hotel stay. It has cave rooms and suites, an outdoor pool, spa, wine cellar, and multiple restaurants, so it’s another great honeymoon pick! 

Utopia Cave Cappadocia is another top-rated luxury hotel nearby, with cave-style rooms, an indoor pool, and a traditional Turkish spa. It also has lots of spacious suites, which would work well for families looking for a high-end stay in Ürgüp.

Taru Cave Suites – $$

We think that Taru Cave Suites is a lovely option if you’re looking for somewhere with cave-hotel character in a calmer part of Cappadocia! It’s set in the heart of Ürgüp, so you’re close to restaurants, local attractions, and the town’s sophisticated evening scene.

The hotel blends traditional cave architecture with a more polished boutique feel, so it still feels very Cappadocia without being over the top. There’s a terrace, restaurant, bar, and plenty of space to unwind after a day of sightseeing, which is exactly what we like about Ürgüp as a base in general!

Rooms here start at around €175 per night, including breakfast and flexible rescheduling or cancellation options.

Another strong Ürgüp option to consider Fresco Cave Suites Cappadocia, especially if you want to be very close to the town center for restaurants and wine bars. It’s set in a restored historic mansion with cave and stone rooms, so it has lots of character, plus a gorgeous indoor pool and spa.

Ayazma Cave Hotel is also worth checking out if you want a comfortable cave-style stay in the heart of Ürgüp. It has a terrace, garden, bar, and a location close to spots like Turasan Winery, Ürgüp Museum, and Temenni Wishing Hill.

Pegas Cave Suites – $ 

Pegas Cave Suites is a great-value cave hotel in Ürgüp, and it’s a lovely choice if you want somewhere comfortable without spending a fortune. Some rooms come with a private pool or jacuzzi, which is such a nice bonus if you’re visiting Cappadocia to celebrate a special occasion! 

The location is handy too, as you’re only about a 5-minute walk from the town center, where you’ll find local restaurants, cafés, and shops. You’re also close to the bus station, so getting over to Göreme is pretty straightforward.

Breakfast is another highlight here, with freshly made omelets and a few dishes that change daily. There’s also a courtyard with a fountain and lovely views, which sounds like a very nice spot for your morning coffee! Prices start at around €100 per night for a deluxe room.

Canyon Cave Hotel is another great option in Ürgüp, especially if you want somewhere small, characterful, and genuinely cave-like. It’s set across a small series of restored cave homes, with rooftop terraces and traditional decor, so it captures that dreamy Cappadocia feel perfectly, without being too expensive.

Tale Cave İnn is also worth checking out if you want a central Ürgüp stay with cave-style rooms and a cozy, boutique feel. It has a terrace with a glamorous bar, and a location close to Nikolos Monastery and Ürgüp Museum, so it’s perfect for exploring the town on foot.

Ortahisar 

BEST FOR BUDGET TRAVELERS

Pros

• Ideal for visitors looking for good value
• Great base for hiking and exploring
• Authentic village feel

Cons 

• Slightly removed from the main action, so you may need a car
• Can be very quiet at night, with limited places to go

Ortahisar isn’t far from Göreme, but it feels like a different place altogether. Rather than big terrace scenes and tourist-packed centers, this part of Cappadocia offers a more local village atmosphere built around its dramatic rock castle (the tallest fairy chimney), with quieter streets, strong value, and a more everyday feel that suits travelers who want character without the crowds.

It’s also one of the more affordable areas to stay, with plenty of boutique cave hotels that offer good quality without the higher price tag. Compared to Ürgüp and Göreme, there’s not much going on at night, except for Turkish night and Whirling Dervish shows, which we truly recommend. Otherwise, you can wander around and explore a few cafes and bars set in caves, sample some wine and local treats, and shop in small souvenir stores.

During the day, there’s still enough to keep you busy. Places like Trabzon City Museum and Abdioğlu Cami Mosque are worth checking out, especially if you’re a history buff like us. Overall, we think Ortahisar works well as a base for exploring the region, whether you’re joining local tours or renting a car to do it all at your own pace.

Black Stove Cappadocia – $$$

Black Stove Cappadocia is a top-rated option in Ortahisar, and it’s a great choice if you want a quieter base. It’s still close to some of Cappadocia’s main sights, including Göreme Open-Air Museum and Ürgüp, but you still get the calmer feel of staying in Ortahisar.

The hotel has a rooftop pool, sun terrace, garden, hot tub, sauna, and fitness center. There’s also free private parking, which is handy if you do decide to rent a car. The interior feels a bit more light and airy than a classic cave hotel, but there are still plenty of nods to Cappadocia’s traditional roots throughout the property.

Rooms here start at around €200 per night, including breakfast, which is pretty good going for a luxury stay in Cappadocia!

Another beautiful high-end stay, Tafoni Houses Cave Hotel is set in restored cave and stone houses near Ortahisar Castle. The property boasts terraces, an art gallery, and a restaurant, so it really feels steeped in Cappadocia’s history and culture. 

Doda Artisanal Cave Hotel 14 Plus is also worth checking out if you want something stylish and adults-only. It has a terrace with views of Ortahisar Castle and the hot air balloons, plus a lovely garden and a restaurant that serves wholesome, artisan food.

Exedra Cappadocia – $$ 

Exedra Cappadocia really stands out with its beautiful, stylish interiors, an infinity pool, and poolside bar – and those are just some of the perks that come with booking a room here! This lovely hotel is set within a large complex of ancient caves and stone houses.

There are 80 rooms and suites in total, all of which have been carved and built into the rock across the property, but no two are laid out the same. There’s also an on-site winery and tasting room, which adds something a bit different to the experience.

Because of its hillside layout, expect plenty of stairs and a slightly labyrinth-like setup – it’s part of the fun for many, but not ideal for those with mobility issues, so do just bear that in mind. Prices start from around €150 per night, including breakfast and daily spa access.

If Exedra is fully booked for your dates, Cappadocia Minia Cave Hotel is another good Ortahisar option for a character-filled stay in the heart of town. It has cave-style rooms, a terrace, restaurant, bar, and views toward Ortahisar Castle, so it’s a lovely pick if you want to enjoy that classic Cappadocia atmosphere without staying somewhere too busy.

Hezen Cave Hotel is also worth checking out if you like a more design-led boutique stay. It has elegant cave rooms and terraces with views over Ortahisar Castle and the surrounding valley, so it feels stylish while still keeping that classic Cappadocia character.

Corner İn Cappadocia – $

Corner İn Cappadocia is a good budget-friendly option if you want to stay in Ortahisar without feeling too far from the action. It’s a small hotel with just 13 rooms, so it has more of a simple guesthouse feel than a big cave resort, which can be a nice thing if you want somewhere low-key.

The location works well for exploring Cappadocia, and you’ll still be close to Ortahisar Castle, local restaurants, and the main sights around Göreme and Uçhisar. There’s also a terrace, full breakfast, and bike rentals available, so it’s a practical base if you want to keep things affordable.

It’s not the fanciest stay in Cappadocia, but it’s still very comfortable and atmospheric, so staying here is a smart way to save some money on your trip. Rooms here start at about €70 per night, which is very hard to beat! 

If Corner İn Cappadocia is fully booked for your dates, Portal Cappadocia is another Ortahisar option to check out, especially if you want something a little more stylish. It’s an adults-only cave hotel with stone and cave rooms, a scenic terrace, and a gorgeous infinity pool overlooking Ortahisar Castle.

Top Activities to do in Cappadocia

Once you’ve settled into your hotel, it’s time to actually see what makes Cappadocia so special. The landscapes here go far beyond the views from your terrace, and these tours make it easy to experience it all without the hassle of planning everything yourself and worrying about transport.
