San José del Cabo
If you’re looking for a slower, more cultural side of Los Cabos, San José del Cabo delivers with its colonial charm and laid-back atmosphere. This historic town is the quieter counterpart to Cabo San Lucas, offering cobblestone streets, traditional plazas, and pastel-colored buildings that make wandering here feel like stepping back in time.
San José del Cabo is especially suited for travelers who prefer art, history, and food experiences over nightlife. The Art District is a must-visit, with galleries and boutiques showcasing local talent, and every Thursday evening from November to June, the streets come alive with the weekly Art Walk. The main square, Plaza Mijares, is the town’s cultural hub, surrounded by restaurants, cafes, and the beautiful Mission San José del Cabo church.
Nearby, you’ll find the San José Estuary and Bird Sanctuary, a peaceful spot for nature lovers, while surfers head to Costa Azul Beach just a short drive away. The town also has excellent farm-to-table dining, with places like Flora Farms and Acre gaining international attention.
While you won’t find the same party scene as Cabo San Lucas, San José offers a richer glimpse into Baja’s heritage with a much calmer pace.

Top Activities to do in Cabo San Lucas
With your hotel in Cabo figured out, now it’s time to experience all this beautiful place has to offer! From bucketlist adventures like riding a camel to sunset cruises and amazing food, there’s no shortage of activities that make Cabo stand out.
Here are a few of our favorite tours that made our time in Cabo San Lucas unforgettable:
- Take a sunset cruise – The sunsets in Cabo are incredible and even better from the water! On this sunset cruise, you’ll see some of the area’s top sights like El Arco and get an unobstructed view of the sunset while relaxing on the deck. Plus, there’s an open bar!
- Ride on a camel – I bet you didn’t think you could do this here! Riding a camel along the beach in Cabo is a total bucket-list experience! This camel outback adventure takes you to an oceanfront ranch and includes a camel ride along with lunch and a tequila tasting.
- Go whale watching – Humpback whales visit Cabo every year from December-March, and seeing them here is a must! This whale watching tour takes you out on the water in a small group with a marine biologist guide. You might even see mom and baby whales together!
- Eat amazing Mexican food – There’s so much great food here, but this food tour takes you to spots you never would discover on your own! With a local guide leading the way, you’ll take a walking tour of downtown Cabo to find all the authentic spots with the most delicious eats.
- Glass-bottom kayak tour – Get out on the water and see all the incredible marine life in a unique way on this kayak and snorkeling tour! You’ll visit the iconic rock formation of El Arco and see tropical fish through the glass bottom of your kayak, and then jump in the water to snorkel.

Renting a Car in Mexico
Undoubtedly, one of the best ways to get around Mexico is in a rental car.
I struggled to get around by bus and taxi for the longest time. But after renting a car in Cancun in 2023, I never looked back. It allowed me to explore the country without worrying about tours or taxis. It was why I fell in love with Mexico and eventually decided to live here periodically.
I refuse to use local services whenever I rent a car in Mexico. The truth is they sometimes can’t be trusted or come with hidden fees (or costly insurance that doesn’t make sense.) There are even rental car scams! So instead, I use Discover Cars, the company most experienced travelers or ex-pats in Mexico recommend. Read my honest review of Discover Cars here for more details!
The rates on Discover Cars are cheap, too, with the average rental costing around $25 USD per day. Full coverage insurance can be added for an extra $10 USD a day too.
Driving in Mexico also only requires a driver’s license using the Roman alphabet. If yours uses another like Japan and China, you simply need an international driving permit.
Insurance is required, but if you book with Discover Cars and get the full coverage, that’s all you need! Oh, and being over 18 is required, and if you’re over 25, your rental will be much cheaper!
