You cannot miss the chance to take this snorkeling tour at Kealakekua Bay when visiting the Big Island! It’s an area of huge historical significance, not to mention epic marine life. What are you waiting for?

As soon as we set foot on the boat in Kona, we knew that we were in for something special. Cruising along the volcanic coastline was breathtaking, as we admired rugged cliffs, deep blue waters, and the occasional glimpse of dolphins swimming along beside us! The crew shared fascinating stories about the area’s history, including the fatal encounter between Captain Cook and the native Hawaiians.

When we arrived in the bay, the water was so clear that we could see vibrant coral formations even before we donned our snorkel masks and went beneath the surface. Then, as soon as we jumped in, we were surrounded by schools of tropical fish such as bright yellow tangs, parrot fish, and even a curious eel! The bay was truly an underwater paradise, and we were absolutely in awe.

After plenty of time snorkeling, we climbed back on board to enjoy a light lunch of sandwiches, chips, and delicious fresh pineapple. The crew was absolutely fantastic and ensured that we had the best time ever. And we’re not the only ones who feel this way – read over 1,000 glowing reviews here!

If you only have time for one tour, make it this 1-day tour of the Big Island.

With over 5,000 five-star reviews (which you can read here!), this full-day adventure truly lives up to the hype. It’s the best way to experience Hawaii’s breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and diverse ecosystems in one unforgettable day.

Our adventure started early and our first major stop was Waipio Valley Lookout, where we stood in awe at the towering cliffs and deep valley below. From there, we continued along the Hamakua Coast, making our way to the stunning Akaka and Rainbow Falls, which are two of the most picturesque waterfalls I’ve ever seen.

One of my favorite moments was stepping onto Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, where we spotted Hawaiian green sea turtles basking in the sun. Although saying that, exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was equally amazing. We got to see steaming vents and massive craters, and even walked through the eerie Thurston Lava Tube. It was epic!

The tour was perfectly paced, with plenty of opportunities to take in the sights, snap photos, and learn about the island’s history from our passionate guide. The small group size made it feel intimate, and the included lunch and coffee farm visit were fantastic bonuses.

If you want to see the best of the Big Island, this tour is an absolute must!

3. Go snorkeling with manta rays at night

Snorkeling with manta rays on this tour is truly an experience unlike any other. We had an incredible time swimming alongside these large, graceful creatures. In fact, we’ll never forget it!

The experience started with a boat ride, and we actually got to watch a gorgeous Hawaiian sunset on board. Talk about starting out on a high note! And things only got better from there as we slipped into the water.

Our guides used lights to illuminate the ocean below in order to attract plankton, because with them comes manta rays. Within minutes, dozens of these gentle giants were gliding beneath us, showcasing their enormous wingspans as they gracefully looped and somersaulted around us. At one point, a ray even gently brushed past by my outstretched hand, which I’ll never forget.

We also have to give a shout out to the fantastic crew, who really went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and having fun. They also taught us so much about the mantas – we were relieved to learn that they have no stingers and are completely harmless.

We didn’t want the experience to end, but wrapping up in towels and enjoying hot drinks on the way back to shore was a pretty nice way to finish the tour. It was a clear night, so we saw lots of stars, too. If you’re visiting the Big Island, this is hands down one of the most breathtaking experiences available.

4. Small Group Twilight Volcano and Stargazing Tour

  • Inclusions: Hotel pickup and drop-off, luxury transportation, picnic lunch, restaurant dinner, professional guide, small group size, use of rain or warm jacket, drinks and snacks, all taxes and fees

This Big Island twilight volcano tour was hands down the most memorable experience we’ve ever had here!

We had so much fun exploring the island, starting with sipping Kona coffee at Bay View Farm while taking in the stunning views of Kealakekua Bay. Next, we stopped at Punalu’u Bakery to sample sweet Hawaiian bread and malasadas, and then the next stop was the striking Punalu’u Black Sand Beach. Here, we caught sight of Hawaiian green sea turtles basking in the sun, which was so exciting.

We also loved exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. We walked through the Thurston Lava Tube, a massive underground cave formed by ancient lava flows, and marveled at the active volcanic sites. Then, as day turned to night, we headed to a secluded stargazing spot, and that’s when the magic truly happened!

The night sky was honestly beyond words. As we gazed up at the mesmerizing tapestry of stars, our guide shared fascinating lore and legends about the different constellations we were seeing. It was the perfect way to end an incredible day.

If you’re looking to experience the best of the Big Island, this tour is a must-do! It’s an amazing combination of nature, history, and stargazing – you really can’t go wrong. And if you check out all the glowing reviews, you’ll see that we’re not the only ones who had a fantastic time.

You can’t pass up the chance to spot whales and dolphins while you’re in Kona, so don’t hesitate to book this boat tour.

The naturalist guides and skipper were incredibly knowledgeable, and their enthusiasm for the marine life in the area was contagious. They knew exactly where to go for the best wildlife sightings, and the experience felt so personalized.

We were lucky enough to witness several whales on this tour, and seeing them breaching left us in awe. The boat itself was perfectly designed for wildlife sighting tours, providing unobstructed views and plenty of seating. Not only did we see whales, but we also encountered pods of playful spinner dolphins swimming right alongside the boat. It was amazing!

The guides also taught us a lot about the Kona ecosystem, explaining how the calm waters and deep coastlines attract such a diverse range of marine life. We even had the chance to spot other species like sperm whales and whale sharks. The tour duration was perfect, too, as it gave us plenty of time to enjoy each encounter without feeling rushed.

We highly recommend this tour for any wildlife enthusiast visiting Big Island. It was a one-of-a-kind way to experience the island’s incredible marine life, and learn from experts in the field. We will definitely do this tour again in the future!

We love ziplining, and it doesn’t get much more scenic or exhilarating than this zipline tour. We had a blast flying over the gorgeous Umauma Falls and enjoyed scenic views of the Pacific Ocean from every platform.

After a quick check-in and safety briefing, our guides got us geared up and ready to fly. Their energy was contagious, and they made sure everyone felt comfortable.

As soon as we soared off the first platform, we knew that this was going to be an unforgettable experience. The views were breathtaking, with lush green treetops and sparkling waterfalls everywhere.

One of our favorite parts was the four dual ziplines, as it meant we got to race each other. It was so much fun laughing and cheering each other on. We didn’t want it to end!

We also got a quick break about halfway through, with fresh fruit snacks and water. It was just what we needed in the Hawaiian heat. The guides made the whole experience even better with their jokes, encouragement, and deep knowledge of the area.

If you’re looking for an adventure that combines adrenaline and stunning scenery, this zipline tour is a must-do. Whether you’re a first-timer or a thrill-seeker, you’ll leave with incredible memories and a huge smile!

7. Learn about Polynesian culture on an ATV tour

This ATV tour perfectly combines adrenaline-pumping adventure with an immersive cultural experience, making it one of the most unique activities we have ever done on the Big Island.

From the moment we arrived, the guides made us feel welcome. After a short safety briefing, we hopped onto our ATVs and set off on the rugged trails in what would turn out to be an unforgettable adventure.

If you’re new to ATVs, don’t worry, because the guides ensure everyone is comfortable before hitting the road. Still, if you would prefer not to drive, the UTV option is a great choice because you can just enjoy the ride as a passenger. The route is gorgeous, with winding forest paths and stunning views of the Hawaiian countryside.

What made this tour stand out to us was the cultural aspect. Along the way, we stopped at different “villages,” each representing a Polynesian island like Hawaii, Tonga, Samoa, and Fiji. At each stop, we learned about the traditions, music, and craftsmanship of these cultures. One of my favorite moments was learning how to husk a coconut the traditional way. Let me tell you, this wasn’t easy, but the delicious taste of the coconut water was worth it!

By the end of the tour, we were dusty, smiling, and definitely feeling more connected to Hawaii’s Polynesian heritage. If you’re looking for a tour that offers both adventure and culture, this is the one.

8. Enjoy a sunset dinner cruise in Kealakekua Bay

This dinner cruise to Kealakekua Bay is hands down our favorite way to spend an evening on the Big Island. We loved the hospitality, amazing food, and stunning views of the Kona coastline, and we’re clearly not the only ones – check out all of the 5-star reviews here!

As soon as we stepped onto the catamaran, we were greeted with a refreshing welcome cocktail. The live Hawaiian music on board set the tone for a fun and festive evening, and as we sailed down the coast, a local historian provided fascinating insights into Hawaii’s rich history.

Kealakekua Bay itself was breathtaking, and even more so at sunset! We got to see the famous Captain Cook monument and learn about how the legendary explorer met his fate right here. We were also lucky enough to spot a pod of dolphins swimming alongside the boat!

The dinner itself was delicious and showcased local flavors well. We loved that there were meal choices for meat eaters and vegetarian options. The crew was exceptional and took care of our every need.

On the way back, the music continued, and some of us even got up to dance on the deck under the stars. It was so much fun, and we really appreciated that there was plenty of space on board, so the catamaran never felt cramped or overcrowded.

9. Explore underwater on the Atlantis submarine

  • Rating: 4.7 stars (check 550+ reviews here)
  • Free cancellation: Yes

Now, it’s not every day that you get to ride in a submarine, so don’t miss out on this sub tour while you’re on the Big Island! We’re keen scuba divers, but we just couldn’t pass up the chance to explore the ocean in a totally new way.

As the submarine sank to a depth of around 100 feet (30 meters), the view through the portholes became increasingly mesmerizing. We saw schools of colorful fish swimming past us, including parrotfish, angelfish, and even a moray eel. Meanwhile, the rugged volcanic formations on the ocean floor were just as fascinating, not to mention teeming with marine life!

Throughout the journey, we enjoyed fascinating commentary about the reef and Hawaii’s marine ecosystem. For me, the highlight was spotting a white-tip reef shark resting on the ocean bottom. We also passed by two shipwrecks, both of which are now thriving artificial reefs. These sites were eerie, but beautiful.

The submarine itself was comfortable, air-conditioned, and designed to provide great views. It’s the perfect choice for anyone who wants to explore Big Island’s marine life but isn’t PADI certified. But honestly, even if you are an experienced diver like us, riding on a submarine is such a unique experience, so we think it’s totally worth doing.

10. Experience a luau!

  • Inclusions: Luau admission, welcome shell lei, dinner, Mai Tai cocktails
  • Rating: 4 stars (check 650+ reviews here)
  • Free cancellation: Yes
  • Price: Check price here!

Last but not least, you simply can’t pass up the chance to party at this top-rated luau while you’re in Hawaii! We had a fantastic evening partying at a luxurious beachfront resort, and the show was incredible.

As soon as we arrived, we were welcomed with a traditional shell lei and the sound of Hawaiian music. We watched the sunset while sipping on refreshing Mai Tai cocktails, and then tucked into the buffet, which was a true feast of island flavors.

Honestly, buffets aren’t always my favorite, but this one was fantastic. I tucked into kalua pork, lomi lomi salmon, and haupia for dessert. The latter is a yummy coconut pudding, and it’s a must-try while you’re in Hawaii!

After dinner came the show, which was an exciting Polynesian stage spectacle. The performers used music and dance to take us on a journey through the Pacific islands, and we couldn’t believe how graceful they were. The highlight of the night was definitely the fire dancing. It was absolutely electrifying!

The entire evening was a perfect blend of culture, entertainment, and warm Polynesian hospitality. You can’t leave Hawaii without attending a luau, so this is a total must-do in our book.

Renting a Car in the USA

View of the road and scenery driving down route 66 in USA

The United States is a vast country with diverse landscapes, from bustling cities to scenic national parks. While public transportation exists in major cities, renting a car is often the best way to explore the country’s wide-open spaces and hidden gems.

We always book with Discover Cars and can’t recommend them enough. It’s super easy to compare prices, check company ratings, find the right vehicle for your needs, and add affordable full coverage insurance. If you want a full breakdown, check out our Discover Cars review here.

Tips for Renting a Car in the USA

  • Drive on the right: In the U.S., vehicles drive on the right-hand side of the road, and the driver’s seat is on the left. If this is different than your home country, take some time to adjust before hitting busy streets!
  • Know the local rules: Speed limits, road signs, and driving laws can differ between states. For example, turning right on red is generally allowed after a complete stop, unless a sign indicates otherwise. Always check the specific rules for the states you’ll be driving in.
  • Add full insurance: We always recommend full coverage rental insurance, especially in the U.S., where long distances, varying road conditions, and unpredictable weather can lead to unexpected situations. Discover Cars makes it easy (and affordable!) to add this peace of mind when you book.
  • Choose the right car: Consider the nature of your trip. For city driving, a compact car is convenient, while for road trips or national park visits, an SUV might be more comfortable. With Discover Cars, it’s easy to filter by vehicle type, transmission, fuel efficiency, and more to find the perfect fit.

What You Need to Rent a Car in the USA

  • A valid driver’s license from your home country.
  • An International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended if your license is not in English or uses a non-Roman alphabet. Some rental companies may require it, so it’s best to check in advance.
  • A credit card in the driver’s name is typically required for the security deposit.
  • Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old, with a young driver surcharge applicable for those under 25. Some companies may have higher age requirements, so make sure you double-check.

Ready to hit the road? Book your car with Discover Cars here and discover the freedom of exploring the USA on your own terms!

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance!

If you’re looking to save money on travel insurance, we currently use and recommend SafetyWing. We’ve been using their coverage since 2018 and they’ve had our backs when we needed emergency flights and got sick overseas.

SafetyWing is one of the cheapest providers out there and covers everything from medical costs to lost luggage, travel delays, and emergency flights. A huge difference we’ve found between them and other companies is that they let you take out a policy AFTER leaving your home country. We’ve also found it handy that it’s a monthly payment rather than a lump sum, and you can get a refund for unused time.

SafetyWing has helped us out in some scary situations before and their affordable coverage has given us peace of mind. You can read our honest review of SafetyWing for all the pros and cons.
