Between the natural beauty and the lively nightlife, it’s easy to see why visitors can’t get enough of these islands. At the heart of it all is Koh Phi Phi Don, the largest and only island with accommodations, while Phi Phi Leh (home of the iconic Maya Bay from the movie The Beach) and Monkey Beach can only be visited on day trips. With that in mind, your “where to stay” decision is really about which bay on Phi Phi Don fits your pace.

Nearly everyone arrives at Tonsai Pier by ferry or speedboat, usually from Phuket, Krabi, or Ao Nang. The island is essentially car‑free, which means hauling luggage is often done on foot, so packing light helps. Getting around is easy enough, especially if you’re staying in or near Tonsai, where most things are walkable. And for beaches and resorts outside the village, longtail boat taxis are the way to go.

Tonsai Village is the most convenient for tours, meals, and nightlife, while Long Beach and Loh Ba Kao Bay feel more like “stay‑put and unwind” pockets where you’ll rely on boat transfers to head back into town. Since boat rides depend on sea conditions and tides, late‑night returns can be a bit tricky, which is why choosing where to stay really shapes the whole experience.

• Tonsai Village – Best for first-time visitors – If you want to experience the real energy of Phi Phi, Tonsai Village is where all the action happens, with restaurants and easy access to tours at your fingertips. Phi Phi Villa Resort is one of the best choices to stay, with roomy accommodations and a pool, just a 15-minute walk from the pier. 

• Loh Ba Kao Bay – Best for a quiet retreat – For those seeking peace and quiet, this bay offers the perfect retreat, with a long stretch of powdery sand and shallow, crystal-clear waters. SAii Phi Phi Island Village combines comfort with luxury and makes an excellent choice for affluent travelers, steps from Loh Bagao Bay Beach.

• Long Beach – Best for beach lovers – This part of the island is known for its laid‑back vibe and excellent snorkeling, ideal for those looking to spend more time on the water. Phi Phi The Beach Resort offers authentic bungalows and beautiful ocean views for a memorable stay.

Tonsai Village

BEST FOR FIRST-TIME VISITORS

Pros 

• A wide range of accommodation  
• The majority of resorts are within a short walking distance
• Best access to tours and boats 

Cons 

• Peak season can feel overcrowded and loud
• Overpriced restaurants and shops, especially those in the very center

Everything on this island revolves around Tonsai Village. You have Tonsai Bay on one side, where boats run all day long, and you’ll find everything from monkey-inhabited beaches to resorts dotted along a 2 km (1.2 mi) coastline. On the other side lies Loh Dalum Bay, home to the island’s main beach, a place we quickly made our favorite hangout, and judging by the crowds, so did everyone else.

People love Tonsai Village because it blends accommodation with buzzing nightlife and fun activities at every turn. From boat tours to late-night cocktails, it’s all within easy reach, making it ideal for first-time visitors. 

The narrow streets form a maze that can feel confusing at first, but every alley eventually leads back to the main walking street, so getting lost is nearly impossible. It’s noisy day and night, with bicycles and small carts weaving past, while vendors and tour operators let you know what’s on special. We could hear them shouting from a mile away! Despite the noise, this is hands down one of our favorite areas on Phi Phi Don, and it’s a spot we always return to.

Phi Phi CoCo Beach Resort – $$$

If you prefer a more luxurious stay, Phi Phi CoCo Beach Resort won’t disappoint. It’s about a 10‑minute walk from the pier, but don’t worry, the staff quickly takes care of your luggage, saving you the hassle of dragging it around. As soon as you arrive, you’re greeted with a cold towel and a refreshing drink while the friendly team introduces you to the property.

The large pool with a jacuzzi area is a perfect spot for honeymooners, especially at night when the lights come on. Massages on the beach, pizza by the pool, and delicious cocktails, we would say this place is more of a luxury escape for couples rather than family vacations.

The rooms may be on the smaller side, but this isn’t your standard hotel stay. The bamboo huts are the highlight, beautifully blending island charm with modern comforts, an experience you simply can’t compare to a typical hotel room. Prices usually range from around $300 USD per night to $470 USD for a bungalow right by the pool.

Phi Phi Villa Resort – $$ 

Phi Phi Villa Resort is an excellent budget-friendly place right by the water and an easy walk from the town, which is exactly why we chose to call it home for a week. From the moment you walk in, the sound of the fountain and lush tropical greenery make you switch to island mode. There’s a huge pool right outside, and a small gym with a ping-pong table for a little playtime, which makes this place perfect for couples and families with children.  

The resort is made up of cozy bungalows equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay. Our balcony was small, but perfect for a morning coffee. After a lazy day on the beach, our favorite evening ritual was walking to town to soak up the lively atmosphere. Expect to pay about $170 USD per night for a deluxe room or $480 USD for a luxury pool suite.

If Phi Phi Villa Resort is all booked up, Mama Beach Residence is another beachfront alternative with modern decor and adults-only access. It’s located on the quieter end of the beach, yet just a 10‑minute walk from the center, with plenty of spots for sunset watching, ideal for romantic getaways.

Another stylish choice in the area is Coco Bella Hotel, where the swimming pool sits right in the middle of the property, surrounded by sweet-scented frangipani and topiary. Set right in the heart of the action and just steps from the beach, the location is unbeatable for families with children and everyone who wants to be where all the fun is.

Phi Phi Arboreal Resort – $ 

For a great budget-friendly option in Tonsai Village, Phi Phi Arboreal Resort checks all the boxes. It’s perched on a hill and a little farther from the beach and pier, which means plenty of steps, but the views are worth it at the top. That said, if steep stairs aren’t your thing, this might not be the best fit, even if you are not the one dragging your suitcases up there.

The rooms are small and simple, but the balconies offer panoramic views of the tropical forest and the sea, which makes it worth it, especially at golden hour. You’re also just a 10-minute walk from the island’s shopping area and nightlife, meaning very close yet far from the noise. Rates usually come in around $50 USD to $80 USD per night, making it one of the best-value stays on the island.

Another reasonably priced option in the area is The view Hostel, just a short walk from Loh Dalum Beach. The social atmosphere and shared-space setup mainly attract younger crowds, though they also cater to travelers of all ages. 

Loh Ba Kao Bay

BEST FOR A QUIET RETREAT

Pros 

• Stunning scenery and crystal-clear waters 
• Peaceful surroundings with upscale resorts and Thai-style bungalows
• The beach is wide and mostly uncrowded

Cons 

• Limited selection of dining, shopping, and nightlife  
• The water is shallow, which is ideal for kids but not so much for adults

Loh Ba Kao Bay might be just a stone’s throw from Tonsai Bay, but the moment you arrive, time seems to slow down. It’s no wonder they call it the “hidden gem” or “Honeymoon Beach.” Most accommodations are lined along the coast, including the largest and most popular SAii Phi Phi Island Village resort, making this area an ideal hideaway for families, couples, or anyone who wants a peaceful day at the beach without having to walk far. 

The beach itself is wide and shaded by exotic trees, so morning walks and all-day lounging feel like a real treat. If you’re anything like us and looking for a thrill, a jungle hike to Phi Phi Viewpoint is the go-to choice for capturing spectacular views of the island. And just a quick longtail boat ride away, Nui Beach is a little cove known for its excellent snorkeling and kayaking. 

With plenty to do, we think that Loh Ba Kao Bay is the perfect base for enjoying and exploring the island, whether you’re in the mood for lazy days on the beach or a hike through the jungle. 

Phi Phi Phu Chalet Resort – $$$ 

Phi Phi Phu Chalet Resort is not your typical flashy 5-star experience; it’s traditional and cozy, with some luxury touches like its infinity pool overlooking the sea. Located in the jungle just a short walk from local diners and shops, this is an excellent base for families and couples looking for a peaceful stay that’s not too far from the fun. The beach is also nearby, with a nice reef you can swim to for snorkeling.

From your spacious chalet, morning comes with sea views you never get tired of. Breakfast is a real treat—don’t miss the pineapple Pad Thai. And don’t skip the drinks here either, poolside lounging feels even better with a banana daiquiri in hand!

The village is close by, but you can still take the tuk-tuk for a real taste of local life. Prices usually average around $360 USD to $500 USD per night.

Centara Villas Phi Phi Island is equally as stunning, with a few extra perks like a steam room and yoga classes to help you connect with the surrounding nature. Located in a secluded beachfront setting at Loh Ba Kao Bay, it’s an excellent choice for travelers looking for a quiet stay.

SAii Phi Phi Island Village – $$

SAii Phi Phi Island Village is one of the most popular hubs in Loh Ba Kao Bay and is widely rated as the best choice for families. From the moment you arrive, the warm welcome sets the tone—staff even greet you with a refreshing drink, a thoughtful touch after the 15-minute boat ride.

Even though it feels like a small village, the bungalow-style rooms are spaced out nicely, giving you a sense of privacy. There’s a pool with a slide for kids, and a “lazy” pool if doing nothing sounds perfect. For family time, the beach is the place to go, where soft, white sand awaits. You can even get sand toys and balls for the kids, and free bicycles to get around, so all-day fun is guaranteed.

Prices typically start at $460 USD per night for a deluxe garden bungalow and can triple for a two-bedroom hillside pool villa with an ocean view.

If the SAii Phi Phi Island Village is all booked up, Phi Phi Relax Beach Resort is another fantastic option at more than half the price, ideal for couples, families, and anyone who values comfort and simplicity over extravagant details. Whether you opt for a couples massage or late-night drinks at the beach bar, your time here is never wasted. 

Long Beach

BEST FOR BEACH LOVERS

Pros 

• Quiet and relaxing, with fewer crowds than the other areas of the island
• Excellent snorkeling right from the shore 
• A variety of accommodations for every budget

Cons 

• There’s almost no nightlife, and it can feel very quiet
• Limited and expensive transport options 

Long Beach (Hat Yao) is Phi Phi Don’s quiet side, perfect for beach lovers craving a peaceful escape. On lazy days, we couldn’t have picked a better spot. From the soft white sand between our toes to the stunning views over Phi Phi Leh, Long Beach has a way of making you forget about all your worries.

Here you’ll find some of the best snorkeling on the island, which is just a short swim from the beach. Just a heads-up: the currents can get strong, and it’s best to avoid snorkeling at Shark Point during the swells from May to October.

When the sea gets rough, there’s no shortage of things to do on land. There are Thai massages, volleyball, or, if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, you can walk the jungle trail connecting Long Beach to Viking Beach and discover even more secluded spots to lounge.

Accommodation is easy to find in Long Beach, with everything from upscale resorts to simple beachfront bungalows. When we spent a day here, we noticed very few day-trippers, which meant far fewer crowds and a much quieter atmosphere—exactly the kind of laid-back beach vibe we were hoping for.

Phi Phi The Beach Resort – $$

Phi Phi The Beach Resort puts you right on the water, where snorkeling is a highlight just steps from shore. Inside, the bungalows feel like private sanctuaries, secluded from the rest of the island, with flower blossoms and swan towels on the beds adding a welcoming touch.

Dining here is with your toes in the sand, under exotic trees strung with glowing lights, creating a magical ambiance as you enjoy fresh seafood and tropical drinks. The resort sits on a hill, so expect some walking, but the sea views and the sounds of monkeys chatting away make it all worth it.

With Long Beach on your doorstep and easy access to the livelier parts of the island, this resort is ideal for couples or anyone craving both peace and adventure. You can expect a night here to cost around $100 USD to $200 USD, depending on room type.

If you’re after something similar within the same price range, Phi Phi Long Beach Resort & Villa is a great alternative, just a short walk from the island’s dining and shopping near Ton Sai Pier. The pool and rooms are on the smaller side, but the blend of traditional Thai style, modern touches, great location, and friendly service makes it a solid choice for couples and families on a budget.

HIP Seaview Resort – $ 

HIP Seaview Resort is an affordable base that puts you on a hilltop overlooking Long Beach. From the moment you arrive, you’re greeted by a peaceful atmosphere, with the occasional monkey wandering by, making it a reliable choice for anyone wanting to stay away from the crowds.

Keep in mind that there are plenty of steps up to the top, so it’s not ideal for anyone with mobility issues. For those who are fit, the climb is well worth it for the views. It’s all wooden bungalows, many of which face the sea, offering gorgeous views to wake up to each morning. 

And when you want to change the scenery, a 10-minute longtail boat ride takes you to Tonsai, which feels completely different from this hidden retreat. Nightly rates usually start around $80 USD and can climb over $350 USD for junior suites.

Viking Nature Resort is a solid backup if HIP Seaview Resort doesn’t work out. Just a five-minute stroll from Long Beach and about an hour’s walk to Phi Phi Viewpoint, it’s especially popular with couples and families seeking a private beach and lush, peaceful surroundings.

Top Activities to do on the Phi Phi Islands

Now that you’ve picked where to stay on Phi Phi Don, it’s time to start planning the fun part! While the island’s beaches are incredible, the real magic comes from getting out on the water, exploring the viewpoints, and experiencing the lively beach scene. From scuba diving with reef sharks to sunrise boat tours and sunset fire shows, there’s plenty to keep you busy.

Here are a few of our favorite experiences to add to your itinerary:

• Go scuba diving – This half-day scuba adventure is easily one of the most unforgettable things you can do here. You’ll head out for two guided reef dives with a PADI professional, exploring coral gardens filled with clownfish, turtles, and sometimes even blacktip reef sharks. It’s an incredible way to see the underwater side of Phi Phi.

• Visit Maya Bay early in the morning – Seeing Maya Bay without the crowds is totally possible on this early morning speedboat tour. You’ll leave Tonsai Pier around sunrise and arrive before most day-trippers, giving you a rare chance to enjoy the beach in peaceful conditions. The tour also stops at Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave, and Bamboo Island, with snorkeling and lunch included along the way.

• Hike to the Phi Phi Viewpoints – For the classic postcard view of the island, you have to make the hike to the Phi Phi Viewpoints above Tonsai Village. The climb is a bit of a workout, but the reward is a sweeping view of two turquoise bays curving around the island. Viewpoint 2 is the most famous, but continuing to Viewpoint 3 is quieter and well worth the extra effort.

• Watch sunset at Loh Dalum Beach – When the afternoon heat fades, Loh Dalum Beach becomes one of the best places to relax. The shallow water is perfect for a swim as the sky turns pink and orange behind the limestone cliffs. Later in the evening, beachfront bars set up fire shows right on the sand, making it one of the most fun nighttime spots on the island.

• Get PADI certified in paradise – Want to take scuba diving to the next level? This PADI Open Water course lets you earn your full certification while diving around Phi Phi’s reefs. Over two to three days, you’ll complete training and four open water dives near Phi Phi Leh and the Bida Islands, with plenty of chances to see turtles, reef sharks, and colorful tropical fish along the way.
