Koh Samui is Thailand’s second-largest island, and although it takes only about an hour to get from one side to the other, each area feels unique, with its own charm and atmosphere. No matter if you want to idle your days on a white sand beach or visiting temples, this island’s got you covered. 

After countless trips to Thailand and Koh Samui, we’ve explored every corner to help you find the best areas to stay plus hotel recommendations for every budget, whether you’re backpacking or planning a romantic proposal. Where to Stay in Koh Samui Map

Overview of the Best Areas to Stay on Koh Samui

Koh Samui is one of Thailand’s ultimate beach destinations. We love the Thai islands, and with so many beach towns to choose from, Samui has a lot to offer. Still, each is unique, and your choice of area depends on the atmosphere you want, since you can’t simply walk from one place to another.

Samui is built around a main ring road, Route 4169, that loops the island. So even though distances look close on a map, getting from one coast to another usually means a proper ride rather than a casual stroll.

Most visitors fly into Koh Samui Airport (USM), in the northeast near Bophut and Chaweng. If you are traveling on a budget, you can take a ferry via Nathon Pier, the main ferry hub on the west coast. 

Once you’re on Samui, getting around is easy with songthaews, shared pick-up trucks that serve as local transport. They mainly cruise the ring road and key tourist strips, but keep in mind that they don’t have a timed, fixed-route system. Although affordable and authentic, we found songthaews to be overcrowded, so if you want a little more comfort and privacy, you can take a taxi or hire a private driver.

Grab is another popular rideshare option, but for those who want maximum freedom, we recommend renting a scooter or car. 

• Chaweng – Best for first-time visitors – First-timers will appreciate the vibrant energy of Chaweng, with bars, restaurants, and shops just steps away. While there’s no shortage of great hotels in the area, we think OZO Chaweng Samui stands out, especially with its unbeatable location, right on the beach and a short stroll from the shopping area.

• Lamai – Best for beach days – For those who want a mix of party and quiet time, Lamai won’t disappoint. Coral Cliff Beach Resort Samui blends downtime and nightlife with a lagoon-style pool and a zen spa, just minutes from the busy bars. 

• Bophut/Fisherman’s Village – Best for charm & atmosphere – Bophut is a serene, tropical paradise with a mix of modern and traditional Thai feel, ideal for couples and families who want to enjoy the island without the party crowds. Holiday Inn Resort Samui delivers comfort and style, with movie nights and entertainment for all ages.

• Choeng Mon – Best for boutique resorts – Relaxed and stunning, with a range of upscale and budget-friendly resorts, Choeng Mon is ideal for lazy beach days. A stay at the Skye Beach Koh Samui offers lush garden surroundings and a games room, steps from the iconic Big Buddha.

Chaweng

BEST FOR FIRST-TIME VISITORS

Pros

• It’s touristy and can be very noisy, especially at night

Surrounded by upscale resorts, palm trees, and some of the coolest hangouts in town, Chaweng is the beating heart of Koh Samui, perfect for first-timers and anyone who wants to be right in the thick of it. Staying here was an easy choice for us because we wanted to be where all the action is.

By day, Chaweng Beach is a given, with plenty of things to do, from paddleboarding and jet skiing to simply chilling to the music coming from the bars. At night, walking along the Soi Green Mango or the nightlife strip is a real treat, with neon-lit energy around every corner! 

Several clubs, like the Ark Bar, put on fire shows that run from 7 or 8 pm until midnight. All you have to do is buy a drink, and you get to watch it for free. When it comes to food, you’re spoilt for choice in Chewang, and you’ll even find places that say “no good, no pay”, though of course, we always pay—and it’s always good!

While in the area, don’t miss the popular mall Central Festival Samui, where everything you need, from clothes to Thai food, is under one roof. This place can be a bit pricey, but you can still find souvenirs and street-style food that won’t blow your budget.

Chaweng Regent Beach Resort – $$$ 

Chaweng Regent Beach Resort is one of the island’s most luxurious stays, where it’s easy to lose track of time and space. Surrounded by lush gardens and koi ponds, it’s the perfect spot for couples seeking a romantic escape or travelers who want to truly relax. The soft sand beach is right at your doorstep, but if that isn’t enough, you can lounge by two outdoor pools and take in the stunning vistas.

As you walk through the property, Thai-style decor is woven in every detail, giving you the ultimate Samui experience. And with all the shops and action in Chaweng just a short walk away, you’ll have endless dining options and boutique shopping right at your doorstep.

Rooms are bright and airy, starting at $200 per night, while a beachfront suite could set you back up to $800 USD.

Another hotel in the area that we think is the perfect escape is SALA Samui Chaweng Beach Resort, just a 5-minute walk from Chaweng Town. With its moon-shaped pool and handcrafted furnishings, this hotel quickly became one of our favorite places to relax and soak in the design.

Alternatively, Centara Reserve Samui feels like a next-level experience with personalized butlers and private sanctuaries on the quieter end of Chaweng Beach. It offers a first-class location, six restaurants and bars, and authentic Thai hospitality, promising a one-of-a-kind escape.

OZO Chaweng Samui – $$

OZO Chaweng Samui is a fantastic mid-range resort that exceeded every expectation. During our stay, we found the location superb—right on the beach with shopping just minutes away.

With two outdoor pools, a relaxing beach bar, and modern rooms that open onto a tropical garden or the pools, the resort makes unwinding effortless. Dining was a real highlight, too, from live music with burgers to romantic dinners on the beach, and don’t miss the mango daiquiris at happy hour. Drinks by the sea just hit differently here! 

Plus, you’re never short of things to do here. They even have jet skiing and beach volleyball right in front of the hotel. Stays typically range from $130 to $300 USD per night during peak season, but we recommend booking early if you want to snag a poolside or beachfront room.

If OZO Chaweng Samui is all booked up, we recommend Lub d Koh Samui Chaweng Beach as a strong contender, just minutes from Chaweng Walking Street. Young couples and solo travelers in particular will love the social vibe, with dorm rooms, billiards, and ping-pong tables for extra fun. 

Another great option is Chaweng Garden Beach Resort, a hidden, family-run property with a chilled beachside restaurant where you can enjoy delicious barbecue. It’s a good fit if you prefer character over fancy extras. 

LOVE beach club – $

Chewang may not be the best area for budget-conscious travelers, but we think that the LOVE beach club delivers on every front without breaking the bank. Inside, each room surprises with charming Thai details, while the outside feels like a modern party hotel, complete with swim-up bars and a DJ playing day and night, perfect for friends and social butterflies looking for a fun vacation.

This property has rooms for every style and budget, from dorms to suites with sea views. When it’s time to eat, you can choose from pizza, Thai dishes, seafood, or a full English breakfast. Its close proximity to Samui International Airport, just 1 km (0.6 mi), makes it a popular choice to stay.

And for nearby things to do, families with children might enjoy the Samui Crocodile Farm, just 2.6 km (1.6 mi) from the accommodation. Rooms start at $150 per night, while suites with sea views begin at $400 per night during peak season (December to February).

Homm Chura Samui is another fantastic, affordable hotel in Chewang, just a 5-minute drive from the bustling Chewang center. Here, you can treat yourself to a pampering massage or lounge by the white marble infinity pool surrounded by lush tropical plants.

One more budget place to consider is The Stay Chaweng Beach Resort, with the white sandy Chaweng Beach right at your doorstep. You can skip breakfast if you want to sleep in, but don’t miss the poolside happy hours, they’re a real treat!

Lamai

BEST FOR BEACH DAYS

• Attractions and viewpoints nearby 
• Variety of accommodation 

Cons 

• Laid-back evenings
• It can feel quiet in the low season 

Lamai is the quieter sister of Chaweng, attracting laid-back budget travelers and luxury tourists alike with its wide range of accommodation. With Lamai Beach as its highlight, you can easily kick back in style, dine by the water, and even get a massage, all while staying close to the action.

This area may be quiet, but you’ll never get bored. If you want action, it’s still there, just not as fast-paced as Chaweng. When you’re ready for more than the beach, the Wat Lamai Temple will captivate you with its Buddhist murals and intricate carvings. You may even get to observe the monks chanting and performing rituals.

For those looking for off-the-beaten-path adventures and scenic views, we recommend a hike to Hin Ta & Hin Yai (Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks), a popular attraction known for its oddly shaped boulders and local legends. Just above the rocks, Lamai Viewpoint, offers panoramic views over the jungle, so it’s worth checking out! Getting there is easy with a combination of zip-lining, hiking, or the cable car to bring you to the top. 

The Lamai Samui – $$$

If you’re after something really special, The Lamai Samui is the kind of place you see in a tropical island movie, promising and full of lively energy. Whether you want to kickstart your day with yoga, pancakes, or a dip in a sparkling pool, this place makes it all happen, without much effort. 

With lovely staff, delicious food, and rooms with sea views and private pools, this resort delivers the perfect luxury island vacation. By day, lounging by the pool or the beach is a must, but reserve your evenings for walking the vibrant markets and joining the crowds for the beachside fire shows. There’s plenty to explore across this gorgeous property, and Lamai Beach is just a short stroll from your room.

The price matches the luxury, so expect to pay around $270 per night in peak season, and around $500 for an oceanfront pool villa with a private pool and hot tub-all worth it!

If The Lamai Samui doesn’t have availability for your dates, you’ll want to try Silavadee Pool Spa Resort, a secluded resort with a private beach and individual villas, each with its own pool. Free shuttle services to Lamai and Chaweng make exploring these places a breeze.

We also recommend Wild Cottages Luxury and Natural, a serene tropical escape just an 8-minute walk from Lamai Beach and near popular attractions such as Hin Ta & Hin Yai rocks and Lamai Viewpoint. If you’re into water sports, you’ll find boating and scuba diving are right on your doorstep.

Coral Cliff Beach Resort Samui – $$

If you want to enjoy Lamai without blowing your budget, Coral Cliff Beach Resort Samui is a fantastic option for travelers or families seeking a beachfront stay that’s both comfortable and affordable. With two pools, direct beach access, spacious rooms, and hearty meals, it has everything you need for a relaxing stay.

When you’re ready to explore, the reception can help arrange tours and activities. Just a few minutes away, you can visit Wat Lamai to admire its intricate temple architecture, or wander the lively Friday night market for street food and souvenirs.

Rates start at around $100 USD per night, depending on the season and room type. Note that this property is in high demand, so it’s best to book your stay in advance.

For a similar beachfront vibe at a great price, The Hive Hotel checks all the boxes without emptying your wallet. With a perfect location in the heart of Lamai, an infinity pool, and spacious rooms with balconies, everything you need is within easy reach. 

Samui Jasmine Resort – $

Samui Jasmine Resort is one of those places that makes you feel like you’ve underpaid. Everything here, from the infinity pool to the beach huts and cozy Thai-style rooms, offers incredible value for money.

Unlike the larger resorts in the area, this one feels more intimate, with rooms arranged around a lush tropical garden. The night market is just a 4-minute walk away, and there are plenty of restaurants and bars nearby. Key landmarks are also not far, with Overlap Stone just 2.1 km (1.3 mi) away, making it an ideal starting point for exploring the island.

With rooms starting at around $120 USD during peak season, it’s hard to beat this ideal combination of style, comfort, and convenience.

If you love the relaxed feel of Samui Jasmine Resort, we think Lamai Inn 99 Bungalows is an excellent alternative. At this family-run hotel, you’re guaranteed a peaceful stay, with attractions like the Hin Ta & Hin Yai Rocks just a 10-minute drive away. 

Another reasonably priced option in the area is Crystal Bay Beach Resort, set among tropical surroundings on the Thong Takien Bay. With fishing, diving, and a nearby golf course, it’s the perfect base for water and sports enthusiasts. 

Bophut/Fisherman’s Village 

BEST FOR CHARM & ATMOSPHERE

Pros

• Stylish and relaxed vibes
• Lively Friday night market 
• Upscale accommodation 

Cons 

• Not ideal for swimming
• Higher costs

Bophut is a mix of old and new, and with its quaint Fisherman’s Village, the iconic Big Buddha, and local charm, it attracts couples and families with children looking for a quiet holiday with a chance to glimpse into traditional Thai culture.

We spent some time here and enjoyed a stroll along the boardwalk, passing by old wooden shophouses, and dined at a beachside seafood restaurant. One of the must-see spots in the area is The Wharf Samui, an open-air mall with 120 shops and plenty to offer day and night. Bophut is also known for its bustling Friday night market, when the main street transforms into a lively scene with food stalls, live music, and performances, a place we genuinely enjoyed. 

Bophut Beach might not be the best for swimming, but it’s the perfect place to lounge all day, try kayaking, or hop on a jet ski, just like we did. Calm and relaxing, this area is also dotted with trendy bars, making it easy to have a fun and memorable stay. You don’t need to worry about accommodation either – you’ll find everything in Bophut, from upscale resorts to more budget-friendly options.

Hansar Samui Resort & Spa – $$$

Hansar Samui Resort & Spa is where to stay when money is not an issue. Luxury rooms, peaceful surroundings, and a beach lined with cozy bean bags and loungers make this place hard to leave. 

A leisurely stroll away is Fisherman’s Village, which feels like a whole new world compared to your peaceful stay. The airport isn’t far either. Here you can kick-start your morning with yoga, dip in the pool, or simply find a sun lounger to relax and enjoy the stunning vistas. The best part is that it never feels crowded, even during the busy Christmas season.

Rates usually fall around $350 USD and $480 USD per night, depending on the time of the year.

Another favorite of ours is Anantara, with similar vibes and on-site extras like other high-end hotels in the area, but with the added bonus of air hockey, foosball, and lovely kids’ areas. A short walk takes you to Fisherman’s Village, so you’re never far from the action. 

Cielo Boutique Hotel & Spa, with its new yoga hub and secluded setting, provides the perfect escape steps from all the excitement. Make sure to try their beach restaurant, which serves amazing organic, homemade Mediterranean and Asian dishes. 

Holiday Inn Resort Samui – $$

If you’re traveling on a budget but don’t want to sacrifice location and comfort, Holiday Inn Resort Samui fits the bill. We think this place is an excellent choice for families traveling with children, offering a lovely water park and indoor playgrounds. Movie nights and circus shows only add to the fun, and don’t miss out on chilling at the Lazy Coconut Bar.

The location is unbeatable, just a 2-minute walk from Bophut Beach. Morning beach walks or sunset swims are practically built into your stay. You are also surrounded by Samui’s top landmarks, including Big Buddha and Maenam Beach, both only a 5-minute ride away.

Prices start at around $120 USD per night, but since it’s in high demand, we recommend booking in advance.

Celes Samui is equally as stunning and feels like a hidden oasis, a short walk from Fisherman’s Village. From your villa, wander into the garden or lounge by the pool and listen to the birds.

Another fantastic and super colorful choice is Maya Resort Samui, a family-friendly resort with fully equipped bungalows, kids zones, and a full program to keep things fun. With cooking classes available, it’s the perfect stay for foodies and aspiring chefs.

Smile House – $

Smile House is one of the best value-for-money stays on the island, with a prime location next to the bustling market, yet it’s surprisingly quiet. There’s so much to see and do in the area, and you won’t even need transport. However, if you’d like to explore other parts of the island, the staff can easily arrange a car rental for you.

We really like Smile House because it’s a traditional Thai resort with spacious bungalows decorated in authentic Thai style. Even better, the hotel is surrounded by coconut palm trees and tropical greenery, giving it that familiar jungle-like feel. Couples will appreciate the romantic beachside dining and peaceful afternoons lounging by the serene pools.

With the airport just 5 km (3.1 mi) away, transfers are easy to arrange. Stays here generally range from around $80 to $250 USD per night for a three-bedroom en-suite family villa.

If Smile House has no availability for your dates, Riviera Beach Hotel is an equally impressive option, albeit smaller. Despite being right in the heart of Fisherman’s Village, you won’t have to worry about noise, thanks to its tucked-away setting just off the main strip.

Pico Samui is another great backup that doesn’t feel like your typical budget hotel. With spacious rooms and a variety of food options, plus water sports like windsurfing, diving, and snorkeling, it’s a must-stay for couples and families seeking an affordable option without sacrificing quality or comfort.

Choeng Mon

BEST FOR BOUTIQUE RESORTS

Pros

Just a short drive from the airport, Choeng Mon is a calm, secluded area near Chaweng and Bophut. With its silky soft sand beach and shallow turquoise waters, it makes a great base for families with children, honeymooners, and anyone looking for a relaxing vacation.

This town has a nice mix of bars and restaurants, especially on Choeng Mon High Street, where you can find everything from Italian to Tex-Mex to candlelit dinners by the water. There’s also a wide range of accommodation, from bungalow hotels to boutique resorts that fit seamlessly into the area’s laid-back charm, making it easy to feel at home while you explore.

There’s even something for temple-goers. Just a five-minute drive from Choeng Mon, you’ll find the Big Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Yai), a popular site that can get crowded on weekends, so plan ahead if you want to meditate and explore in peace. The 12-meter (39-foot) gold-painted Buddha is the highlight, surrounded by other smaller statues within the large temple grounds. 

Whether you’re exploring the temple or just soaking up the serene surroundings, Choeng Mon makes it easy to relax and enjoy the slower pace of island life.

SALA Samui Choengmon – $$$

SALA Samui Choengmon combines luxury and privacy with villas, each with its own pool and outdoor rain shower, taking bath time to a whole new level. This resort holds two Michelin Keys, so you can relax knowing you’re in expert hands from the minute you walk in. Secluded and full of romance, it’s the perfect choice for a couple’s getaway.

Just walking around the resort is a pure joy, with tropical gardens and stylish design details at every turn. It’s hard to pick a favorite perk, but personalized touches, like a pillow menu, silky cotton robes, and a floating breakfast in your pool, set the bar high.

Another great choice in the area is the stylish Melia Koh Samui resort, overlooking Choeng Mon Beach. This luxury family resort is known for its boat suites, each with a private garden surrounded by water.

Kimpton Kitalay Samui also comes highly recommended, just steps from Choeng Mon Beach, with an infinity pool and yoga studios. With extras like free bikes and a kids’ club, there’s a little something for everyone!

Skye Beach Koh Samui – $$

Skye Beach Koh Samui is the kind of place you go when you’ve had enough of the crowds. Calm, intimate, and with a Zen vibe, it’s a favorite for couples seeking a romantic escape.

A three-minute stroll takes you straight to Plai Laem Beach, or to the nearby 7-Eleven for late-night snacks. When you need more action, Fisherman’s Village is just a short drive or taxi ride away.

Rates start at around $270 USD for a one-bedroom pool suite and go up to $850 USD for a three-bedroom pool suite with sea view and a private cinema. A delicious breakfast is included, so don’t skip it.

If Skye Beach Koh Samui is all sold out, Paradise Island Estate is the next best choice. Tucked inside a walled community, it offers spacious suites and villas in modern Thai style, just a five-minute walk from Choeng Mon Beach.

PS Thana Resort – $

PS Thana Resort offers some of the best value for money in Choeng Mon. It has a family-friendly vibe, with peaceful, comfortable rooms, and a kids’ pool and playground, making it a great option for families on a budget. You can start your day with a dip in the pool, try water sports, or even play a round of golf nearby.

When you’re ready for a change of pace, everything is within easy reach. Walk into town for dinner and drinks, or hop in a taxi to the iconic Big Buddha Temple, only 10 minutes away. Rates typically range from around $80 to $160 USD per night, with breakfast often included.

We also love Samui Mekkala Seaview for more than its affordable rates. The spacious rooms with balconies and the convenience of being near the main street make it a great choice for your stay on the island.

Samui Honey Cottages Beach Resort is another fantastic budget-friendly option, with private bungalows and bathrooms with glass roofs. Staying here puts you right in front of Choeng Mon Beach, with attractions like the Big Buddha Statue, Viewpoint, and Na Muang Waterfalls just a short drive away.

Top Activities to do on Koh Samui

Now that you’ve picked out your favorite area and hotel, you can plan the rest of your itinerary! There’s more to Koh Samui than just lounging on the beach, although that is one of my favoirte things to do. Here are a few other can’t-miss activities that will make your time in the Thai Islands memorable!

• See Koh Samui’s top sights – Maximize your sightseeing on this customizable tour of Samui. This is the best way to see iconic sights, like the Big Buddha Temple, Lad Koh Viewpoint, swim in Hin Lad Waterfall, or more – it’s up to you!

• Visit an ethical elephant sanctuary – Going to an elephant sanctuary is a must on any Thailand itinerary, and this ethical one is our top pick! It ensures that the elephants are taken care of, and it’s not over-touristed, so it’s a wholesome experience all around.

• Explore Ang Thong National Park – This full-day tour is the best way to see a protected marine reserve. You can snorkel through stunning coral, kayak past limestone cliffs, and soak in the beauty of Thailand!
