There are only four islands in the Galapagos where you can actually spend the night, and each one has its own unique vibe. Floreana is one of them, but with only a handful of accommodation options, it’s not usually practical for most travelers. That leaves the three larger islands, Santa Cruz, San Cristobal, and Isabela, which all make fantastic bases depending on the kind of trip you’re after.
You’ll likely fly into either Santa Cruz or San Cristobal, and from there, ferries connect you to the other islands if you’d like to hop around. Once you’re settled, getting around is straightforward. Taxis are the easiest way to cover longer distances, while the main towns are compact, safe, and wonderfully walkable, perfect for exploring on foot between cafes, restaurants, and the waterfront.

Multiple Galapagos Islands trips have taught us that these cities don’t reward spontaneity when it comes to planning. The good places get snapped up months in advance, leaving the overpriced and underwhelming options for last-minute travelers.
The sweet spot for booking Galapagos Islands accommodations is 3-4 months out—enough time to secure good rates but not so far ahead that you’re locking in plans excessively early.
Where to Stay in the Galapagos Islands
Santa Cruz (Puerto Ayora)
Puerto Ayora, located on Santa Cruz Island, is the largest town in the Galapagos and the hub for most visitors. If it’s your first trip to the islands, this is hands down the best place to start. The town has the widest choice of hotels, restaurants, and shops, plus it’s the departure point for many day tours, from snorkeling at Santa Fe Island to hiking through lava tunnels.
