Okay, so we’ve covered all of the glitz and glam of Dubai’s newest and flashiest neighborhoods, but Bur Dubai sits in stark contrast to all of the city’s iconic skyscrapers and ultramodern buildings. It’s one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods and the perfect place to experience traditional Dubai—yep, it does still exist!
Bur Dubai is situated along the western bank of Dubai Creek. It’s a historic district filled with winding streets, vibrant souks, and beautifully preserved wind-tower houses. We absolutely loved exploring this area because it offered us a glimpse into what Dubai was like before skyscrapers dominated the skyline, with a slower pace and a more local feel. If you’re worried that Dubai might feel a bit too artificial for you, then we highly recommend staying here.
As for what to get up to here, highlights include the Dubai Museum, the textile and perfume souks, and the lively Meena Bazaar, where you can find everything from gold jewelry to colorful fabrics. Taking a traditional abra ride across the Creek is also a must!
Another thing we love about Bur Dubai is the excellent restaurants. You can find lots of authentic Emirati, Indian, and Persian cuisine around, making it a fantastic foodie destination! This is a more budget-friendly area of Dubai to stay in, too. While it’s slightly removed from Dubai’s modern landmarks, taxis, ride-hailing apps, and the metro make getting around easy.

Raffles Dubai – $$$

Deira is one of Dubai’s oldest and most vibrant neighborhoods. We love it because it offers a taste of the city’s traditional charm. It’s located on the northern side of Dubai Creek and is known for its bustling souks, historic streets, and authentic local atmosphere.
Here, you’ll find the famous Gold Souk, Spice Souk, and Perfume Souk, where merchants have been trading for decades. Wandering through the alleys and markets really does feel like stepping back in time, giving visitors a sense of old Dubai before all of the construction began. We really enjoyed staying here and would definitely do so again!
Deira is perfect for travelers seeking cultural experiences, budget-friendly shopping, and a lively, local vibe. We enjoyed exploring the waterfront promenade, taking an abra ride across the Creek, and sampling delicious street food at traditional eateries, of course!
The area is bustling, colorful, and full of energy, making it ideal for those who want a more authentic Dubai experience without the glitz and glamour of Downtown or the Marina.
