In this one-day itinerary, I’m sharing exactly how we spent the perfect day exploring the North Shore on our last trip. It includes all the highlights—from malasadas and coffee stops to bucket-list adventures, iconic beaches, and ending the day with an unforgettable luau. If you only have one day to see the North Shore, this itinerary will help you make the most of it!

Itinerary Overview
If you’re staying in Waikiki (like most first-timers do), you’re going to need some wheels in order to follow this day trip itinerary. We usually book our rental cars through Discover Cars, and here’s my biggest Waikiki tip: rent a car for only a day or two, not your entire trip. Waikiki hotel parking is painful (around $50 USD per day!). So, unless you enjoy paying luxury prices to store your vehicle overnight, I recommend grabbing the car in the morning, doing your North Shore adventure, and returning it later in the day.
If driving isn’t your thing (or you just want a zero-stress day), I totally get that too. In that case, a guided tour—like this full-day North Shore tour—is a great alternative and lets you hit the main highlights without worrying about directions or parking.
But if you’re ready to hit the road and explore on your own, here’s an overview of our recommended itinerary for an epic North Shore day trip:
Morning – Leave Waikiki early, grab malasadas at Leonard’s Bakery, then stop for coffee at Green World Coffee Farm before continuing north.
Mid-Morning – Choose your adventure: go shark cage diving from Haleʻiwa Harbor or soar above the North Shore on a zipline tour, followed by lunch nearby.
Early Afternoon – Relax and stretch your legs at Sunset Beach while watching surfers and soaking up classic North Shore scenery.
Late Afternoon – Explore Waimea Valley and walk to Waimea Falls, with time to swim beneath the waterfall if you’d like.
Evening – End the day with the Toa Luau at Waimea Valley, complete with cultural activities, dinner, and an unforgettable fire dancing show.
Day Trip to Oahu’s North Shore
Leave Honolulu – Stop at Leonard’s Bakery
To make the most of your day on the North Shore, you’ll want to leave Honolulu early (we’re talking between 7 am and 8 am, depending on the time of your first activity). You’ll be heading out during peak commute time, and the H1 can get a bit backed up, so an early start makes a big difference.
Before you even hit the highway, make a quick stop at Leonard’s Bakery. It’s located just outside Waikiki and right before you jump on the H1, which makes it a super convenient first stop on your road trip north. And yes, it’s 100% worth the stop!
Leonard’s is famous for their malasadas, a Portuguese-style donut that’s deep-fried, rolled in sugar, and made fresh to order. When we went, there wasn’t even a line (early mornings for the win!), and we had warm malasadas in our hands within minutes. We tried both the cinnamon sugar and the haupia (coconut-filled), and I finally understood the hype. Still warm, completely doused in sugar, and highly addictive—I could’ve easily eaten a few more!
Morning – Green World Coffee Farm
After your sugar-fueled stop at Leonard’s, it’s time to head north. It should take about 45 minutes to an hour to reach Green World Coffee Farm, depending on traffic—and by the time we arrived, we were more than ready for a caffeine fix.
This is such an easy stop to work into your day because it’s right off the highway and has lots of parking (which is a rare and beautiful thing on Oahu). We’d heard it can get pretty packed later in the day when the tour buses show up, but in the morning, it was the complete opposite. When we went, it was quiet, calm, and super peaceful, which made it feel like a little hidden gem.
We ordered their house blend (solid, smooth, exactly what you want on a road trip) and a chai latte that was surprisingly good—warm, spicy, and not overly sweet. After that, we took our drinks and wandered around the property, checking out the coffee bushes up close and stretching our legs before getting back in the car.
It’s a quick stop, but it’s one I’d absolutely recommend, especially if you’re like me and can’t function properly until you’ve had your morning coffee.
Mid-Morning – Two Options: Shark Cage Dive or Ziplining
This is where your North Shore day can go in two totally different directions, depending on what kind of adventure you’re craving. If you’re feeling extra adventurous (and want a story you’ll be telling for the rest of your life), go for the thrilling shark cage dive. But if voluntarily getting in the ocean with sharks sounds like a personal nightmare (no judgment!), then the North Shore zipline experience is an amazing alternative that still gives you an adrenaline rush!
Both options are incredible, and you really can’t go wrong. Just note that the zipline tour is farther away than the shark dive, so you’ll want to plan accordingly and leave Waikiki earlier if you’re doing the zipline adventure.
Option 1: Go shark cage diving and grab lunch in Haleiwa town
Shark cage diving is truly a bucket-list experience, and the North Shore is hands-down the best place in Hawaii to do it. In fact, Oahu is widely considered the top spot in all of Hawaii for shark diving, so if this is something you’ve ever wanted to try, this is the place!
This highly rated tour departs from Haleʻiwa Harbor, which is only about 15 minutes from Green World Coffee Farm, and has an 11 am option with a check-in time of 10:30 am, which fits perfectly in this itinerary.
The experience is safe and easy with no scuba experience necessary. You’ll put on a snorkel mask and float just below the surface in a secure cage while sharks swim freely around you. Most tours regularly spot Galapagos and sandbar sharks, and depending on the season, you might even see dolphins, turtles, or even whales in the winter months.
Seeing sharks from a boat is cool, but being in the water with them (even in a cage) is on a whole other level. The guides do a great job explaining shark behavior, safety, and conservation, which really helps to ease any nerves. If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience you can really only do here, this is it!
The tour ends around 1 pm, which makes it the perfect time to grab lunch nearby. We wandered into Haleiwa town to see what we could find! We grabbed acai bowls from Haleʻiwa Bowls, and the outdoor seating area there is lovely. Of course, we also made the quick walk to Matsumoto Shave Ice for a treat – it’s a North Shore icon. Order the rainbow shave ice with vanilla ice cream and thank me later!

Option 2: Soar on Oahu’s longest ziplines and visit the famous North Shore food trucks
If you’d rather keep your adventure on land, this North Shore zipline tour is a must. The North Shore is already stunning from the ground, but seeing it from above gives you a whole new perspective.
This tour is about a 45-minute drive from Green World Coffee Farm, but the drive is incredibly scenic—especially once you start following the coastline. We recommend booking the 10 am or 10:20 am start time, which means you may need to leave Waikiki a bit earlier than usual (around 7 am) to fit in the morning stops and still make it on time without feeling rushed.
The experience starts with an ATV ride up to the top of the course (a fun bonus in itself), and then you’ll tackle a series of 8 long ziplines, sky bridges, and short rappels above lush farmland with sweeping views of the mountains and coastline. These are the longest ziplines on the island, so you really get that “flying” feeling.
The tour lasts about 2.5 hours, so you’ll finish between 12:30-1 pm, and you’ll definitely be hungry afterward. Luckily, the famous Kahuku Food Trucks are only a 3-minute drive away. We grabbed the shrimp scampi plate from Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck, and the garlicky goodness was exactly what we needed after all that adrenaline!

Afternoon – Sunset Beach
After a thrilling morning (and a very satisfying lunch), it’s time to slow things down a bit with a stop at Sunset Beach. This is one of the most famous beaches on Oahu’s North Shore, and even if you only spend a short time here, it’s absolutely worth the stop.
Sunset Beach is best known for its massive winter waves, which are seriously impressive to see in person. During surf season, this is one of the top spots in the world for big wave surfing, and it’s so fun to pull up, stretch your legs, and watch the surfers tackle the waves. Even if you visit outside of winter, it’s still a gorgeous stretch of sand with clear water, wide open views, and that classic North Shore vibe.
We only spent about 30 minutes here, but it was the perfect little reset. The waves were “only” around 8 feet (2.4 meters), but they can reach 20 feet (6 meters) or more! We walked along the sand, took a few photos, and just enjoyed the scenery. Parking was super easy, too. We parked across the street, and there was lots of space when we visited, plus washrooms, which is always appreciated on a day trip.
If you’re coming from the shark cage dive, it’s about a 20-minute drive from Haleʻiwa Harbor. If you did the zipline tour and ate at the Kahuku Food Trucks, it’s only about 12 minutes to get here—so either way, it’s a quick and easy stop on the way to the next activity.
Late Afternoon/Evening – Waimea Valley and Toa Luau
To end your North Shore day on the highest possible note, we highly recommend booking the Toa Luau at Waimea Valley. It’s one of our favorite experiences on Oahu because it combines a luau with admission to Waimea Valley all in one.
From Sunset Beach, it’s only about a 10-minute drive, and we recommend planning to arrive around 3 pm. That gives you plenty of time to explore the valley before the luau begins at 5 pm.
The main thing you’ll want to do here is the walk to Waimea Falls. The trail is fully paved and takes you through gorgeous, lush garden grounds that feel like something out of Jurassic Park. It’s about a 30-minute walk each way, and the waterfall at the end is beautiful. You can even swim here, so definitely bring a bathing suit if you want to take a dip.
Check-in for the luau starts around 4:50–5 pm, and once you’re in, the fun begins. Before dinner, there are cultural activities, and then you’ll sit down for a big meal followed by an incredible Polynesian show complete with fire dancing (my favorite part!).
One important note: don’t book this on a Monday, since Waimea Valley is closed and the valley is a big part of what makes this experience so special. The luau wraps up around 8 pm, giving you plenty of time to drive back to Waikiki and crash after a very full (and very memorable) North Shore day!
