Quartiere Spagnolo (Spanish Quarter)

If you’re after that raw, authentic Naples experience, the Spanish Quarter is the place to be! This buzzing maze of narrow streets and hanging laundry is as local as it gets—full of character, grit, and old-school charm. 

It was originally built in the 16th century to house Spanish troops (hence the name), and today it remains one of the most lived-in, vibrant, and historic areas of the city.

The location is ideal for exploring. You’re just steps from Via Toledo, one of Naples’ main shopping streets, and within walking distance of the Royal Palace, Galleria Umberto I, and the Toledo metro station (aka one of the most beautiful subway stations in the world). There’s also no shortage of traditional trattorias, espresso bars, and the best people-watching in the city.

That said, it’s definitely more rough-around-the-edges than some other neighborhoods. It’s lively, loud, and chaotic—in the best way. But if you’re someone who loves being immersed in the local vibe, it’s the perfect spot!

Vomero is ideal for families, couples, or anyone wanting a more relaxed base. It’s not exactly in the center of the action, but the views over the Bay of Naples, Mount Vesuvius, and the historic city center more than make up for it. Plus, getting around is easy thanks to the funicular railway that zips you up and down the hill in just a few minutes.

Top sights nearby include Castel Sant’Elmo and the Certosa di San Martino—two must-visit places for panoramic views and a bit of history. It’s also a great area to simply wander, shop, and enjoy a more local side of the city.

Port of Naples

The Port of Naples area is one of the most convenient places to stay, especially if you plan to take day trips to Capri, Ischia, or the Amalfi Coast. Ferries and hydrofoils depart regularly from Molo Beverello, so you can hop aboard without the hassle of early-morning commutes.

It’s also close to the central train station and the historical center, making it a great base if you’re working with a tighter schedule or want to be well-connected. This area doesn’t have the same historic charm as places like the Spanish Quarter or Centro Storico, but it makes up for that with practicality.

You’ll still find a handful of notable sights nearby, including Castel Nuovo (a striking medieval fortress), the Royal Palace of Naples, and Piazza del Municipio. Plus, there are plenty of hotels here, ranging from luxury waterfront stays to more affordable options.

• Take a pizza-making class – We had a blast learning how to make real Neapolitan pizza from scratch in this cooking class! Between the hands-on dough work, tasty local appetizers, and wine, this class was a total treat.

• Explore Pompeii and hike Mt. Vesuvius – This day trip from Naples was a major highlight! Our guide brought Pompeii’s ruins to life, and the hike to Vesuvius’ crater was epic. We capped it off with a pizza lunch—history, views, and carbs? Count us in!
